The University of Glasgow, commonly known as Glas., is a renowned public research university in Glasgow, Scotland. Established by papal bull in 1451, it is the fourth-oldest university in the English-speaking world and one of Scotland's ancient universities. Historically, the university's initial accommodation, including the Glasgow University Library, was part of the religious precincts of Glasgow Cathedral. In 1460, the university moved to a land grant from James, Lord Hamilton, on the east side of High Street, where it remained for four centuries. The mid-17th century 'Nova Erectio' or New Building was considered one of Scotland's finest buildings at the time.

In 1870, the university relocated to Gilmorehill in the city's West End. The new campus, designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott in the Gothic revival style, featured buildings with a grand twin-quadrangle layout. This move was necessary as the original High Street location became too cramped due to the university's expansion and the area's decline into slums.

Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, the university continued to grow, adding various buildings and facilities. The 1930s saw the construction of the award-winning round Reading Room, and the university expanded further by acquiring Victorian houses in the Hillhead district. The medical school extended into neighboring Partick, and the veterinary medicine school moved to the Garscube Estate in 1954. Subsequent decades saw the addition of modern buildings, such as the Wolfson Medical School Building in 2002 and the Sir Alwyn Williams building in 2007.

In recent years, the university has invested significantly in new facilities, including the Kelvin Hall transformation project in 2016 and the opening of the James McCune Smith Learning Hub in 2021. Future plans include a £900 million redevelopment of the Gilmorehill campus.

The University of Glasgow's Memorial Chapel, completed in 1929, commemorates those who died in the First and Second World Wars. Daily services are held during term time, and the chapel is used for weddings, baptisms, and funerals.
