The International English Language Testing System or IELTS test is an English proficiency test for non-native speakers, accepted all over the world. If you are a non-native English speaker and trying to pursue education or a career outside your home country, then attempting the IELTS test is one of the primary requirements you would have to fulfill.

The IELTS test has two major categories, namely: The Academic IELTS and the General Discussion IELTS.

  • Academic IELTS: This category of IELTS is availed by those who are aiming to pursue higher education or a professional license in a foreign English-speaking country. Its syllabus is designed to verify the capability of an individual to start studying or training in English.
  • General Training IELTS: This category of the IELTS is availed by students seeking secondary education, work experience, or training programs in an English-speaking country. It verifies the basic survival skills of an individual in an English-speaking society or workplace.

Both types of IELTS exams have four major sectors of tests.

  • IELTS Reading Test: Lasts for 60 mins
  • IELTS Writing Test: Lasts for 60 minutes
  • IELTS Listening Test: Lasts for 30 minutes
  • IELTS Speaking Test: Lasts for 11 to 14 minutes

IELTS Speaking Test

The IELTS speaking test is one of the most crucial tests among all the IELTS exams. It assesses an individual’s capability to speak and communicate in English with ample fluency and grace.

The IELTS speaking test is a face-to-face exam in the presence of a certified examiner who would judge your proficiency and grasp of the English language through three well-designed segments. The three segments in the IELTS speaking test are the General Interview Round, the Cue Card Segment, and the Follow-up Questions Segment.

All the parts of the speaking test are scored individually and the average of those scores would form your IELTS speaking test band which would range from 0 to 9. The syllabus for both academic and general training speaking tests is the same.

  • General Interview Round: In this round, the examiner will ask you a series of questions related to your personal, educational, and professional background. This round is mainly an ice-breaker or warm-up round which is meant to make the candidate comfortable for the following rounds. It lasts for three to four minutes.
  • Cue Card Round: This is a time-based round where the examiner would hand you a cue card with a topic written on it. You will be given one minute to analyze the topic and map the answer in your mind. Then you will be timed for two minutes during which you need to deliver a speech on the cue card topics.
  • Follow-up Questions Round: This round is a continuation of the Cue Card round and it takes about 5 to 6 minutes to complete. In this segment, you would be asked certain follow-up questions based on your speech on the cue card topics and you have to instantly think of its answer and voice it. This round checks your overall conversation and communication skills in English.

IELTS speaking test: Cue Card Section

The cue card section is the second among three rounds of the IELTS speaking test. In this round, you are allotted one minute to prepare your speech on one of the cue card topics, after which you will have two minutes to deliver a monologue on it. Below are some tips to ace the IELTS speaking topics round.

  • Understand the topic: The first task of the cue card section is to read and understand the topic so that your speech justifies the topic and its essence.
  • Analyse well: After getting a grasp on the topic, your second task is to prepare for the speech on the cue card topic. You should utilize the one-minute preparation time to your advantage.
  • Utilize the prompts: Cue Card topics have some prompts based on the topics jotted down for you. Use them in your speech to gain brownie points. They are provided to help you.
  • Deliver the speech with confidence: After that, your next task is to deliver the speech. Try to be as calm and confident as possible and use the vocabulary you are comfortable with. Remember to give importance to quality over quantity.
  • Practice: To be confident during the IELTS speaking test cue card section, you would require a lot of practice on the commonly asked IELTS cue card questions. Make sure to time yourself while practicing your speech on common IELTS speaking topics so that the pressure during the test is not overwhelming.

Assessment Criteria of the IELTS Cue Card Questions

While preparing for the IELTS cue card section, you should be well aware of the assessment criteria for the segment. This will help you to fine-tune your speech to ace each part of the marking scheme of the IELTS speaking test.

  • Fluency and Coherence: This factor checks your proficiency and grasp of the language, tendency to repeat words, duration of pause within your speech, and your overall smooth flow of ideas.
  • Pronunciation: This factor judges your pronunciation of English words and the overall understandability of your speech.
  • Grammatical Accuracy: This factor evaluates your grammar within your speech and how accurately you have used it.
  • Lexical Range:  Lastly, this factor checks your overall vocabulary and the range of words you are capable of using appropriately within your answer eloquently.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use slang and colloquial language during my IELTS speaking test?

No. It is not advised to use slang or colloquial language in your IELTS speaking test answers. This gives out a very negative impression to the examiner which would affect your IELTS score. So try to keep your answers semi-formal and maintain rhythm while delivering the answer.

Can the topic in my cue card for the IELTS exam be changed?

No. You must stick to the topic you have been assigned. You cannot change or alter the topic the examiner has handed you, neither is it a good practice to ask for a different topic once you have been assigned one. Try to understand the topic well and read the prompts to utilize them in your answer. In case you fail to understand the topic, you can ask the examiner to repeat the topic which will help you understand it better.

Can I ask for hints from the examiner to understand the cue card questions?

No. It is not a good practice to be over-friendly with your examiner as it gives out a negative impression. In case you do not understand the question, you can ask your examiner to repeat it for your better understanding.

Is it mandatory to speak for 2 minutes in the Cue Card section of the IELTS speaking test?

No, you don't need to speak for exactly 2 minutes for the IELTS cue card section. But it is good practice to keep your answers between 1.5 to 2 minutes. The answer should at least be lengthy enough for the examiner to judge your vocabulary, fluency, and your understanding of the topic. If you are very underconfident about your answer, you can aim for a 1-minute long speech. Anything less than 1 minute will affect your IELTS score inversely.

What is “IELTS on the computer”?

“IELTS on computer” is the same IELTS exam for Writing, Reading, and Listening test. The only difference is that instead of writing the answers on paper, you need to type the answer on the computer screen. Apart from that, the IELTS Speaking test would still be conducted face-to-face.

Can the IELTS test results be checked online?

Yes. On successful completion of the IELTS exam, you will receive a mail with the link to download the result within 13 days of the exam. If you have taken the online IELTS test, you will receive the result within 6-7 days of the completion of the result.
