For non-native English-speaking individuals, to certify themselves as fluent English speakers, the International English Language Test System, or simply the IELTS Exam was developed. Its certificate holds the great value of authenticity and is accepted by almost all foreign universities and companies. Thus it is very important for all students who are seeking a career abroad, to emphasize their IELTS preparation according to IELTS Academics and score well on their IELTS exam.

Among four different types of IELTS English tests,  the IELTS Speaking Test requires the most practice and preparation. In this test, an examiner will test your grasp, understanding, and fluency in the language and evaluate you on IELTS Academic structures and matrices. In this section, we will be talking about the IELTS Speaking test, more specifically the IELTS Cue Cards.

IELTS Cue Card: The second section of the IELTS Speaking Test

IELTS Cue Card is the second part of the IELTS speaking test which has an overall time limit of 14 minutes. The IELTS Cue Card section takes up about 3 - 4 minutes with a preparation time of 1 minute. An IELTS speaking topic will be provided to you on your IELTS Cue Card with some other points mentioned as well. You need to include these points in your answer so it’s important to keep it in mind while mentally shaping your answer. Preparation time for each IELTS Cue Card topic is 1 minute, after which you will be given 2 minutes to voice your answer. Your examiner scores you based on the IELTS speaking test matrices at the end of your answer.

Thus you need to understand the process of IELTS Cue Cards in the IELTS Speaking Test and prepare according to IELTS Academic. You can practice your answers for IELTS speaking topics from previous years which will increase your confidence and help in your IELTS preparation.  Proper IELTS coaching can prove to be a game-changer for any IELTS exam aspirant. Let us discuss one such topic of the IELTS Cue Card which is “ Describe a piece of clothing you wear often ”

IELTS Cue Card - Model Answer 1: Describe a piece of clothing you wear most often

Introduction :

Clothes are one of the necessities of a person and they have the power to define the personality of a person too. A stylish person keeps up with the latest clothing trends, whereas a minimalist would always prefer comfort over style. I belong to the latter and I have a few clothes which make me feel so comfortable that I wear them now and then.

What is the piece of clothing and why do you love it?

The apparel I am talking about is my favorite pair of dark blue jeans with a cotton white T-shirt. This combination of colors is my favorite and I feel they match my personality. But the cherry on top is the comfort these clothes give me. These two pair with each other like a married couple, and the comfort they give me is simply out of the world. The T-shirt is so light and breezy that it is perfect for any simple occasion on a summer day, while the jeans are my perfect fit. I have tried jeans from several brands, but I keep coming back to this air of my old jeans. There is something surreal about the comfort a pair of old-washed jeans can provide, which no new pair can help you with.

Conclusion:

Since I am the kind of person who hardly dresses up for any occasion, my favorite choice would always be this combination of old jeans and a white T-shirt. I wear them to the market, to meet friends, quick errands, and any other simple occasions whenever I get an opportunity to do so. I believe, when it comes to clothing, conform triumphs style. Hence if I am ever given a choice, I would choose my pair of comfortable jeans and a white T-shirt any day.

IELTS Cue Card - Model Answer 2: Describe a piece of clothing you wear most often

Try to start with a backstory:

I have been away from my house during the week due to my IELTS exam preparation and IELTS coaching classes. Most of my IELTS coaching classes are in the town and my house is in the countryside, hence I have been staying at a hostel to focus and to save time on the commute. But I visit my parents over the weekend and whenever I go back to my house, there is this pair of shorts that I instantly change into. This pair of shorts is my favorite piece of clothing and I never miss an opportunity to wear them

Continue the story by giving all the necessary details:

The shorts are extremely comfortable and somehow they bring a sense of satisfaction in me. They have been washed several times and hence they have lost their color, but the comfort they exude overshadows these shortcomings. My mother has bugged me several times to discard these shorts but my reply is always a no. Whenever I wear these shorts my feeling of being at home intensifies. It gives me the same comfort as my mother’s home-cooked meals and brings joy to my hectic life at home. Living away from home can be tough, and these small pieces of happiness matter all the more when I get back to my place, my home.

An empathetic conclusion:

I am certain that every individual has a piece of clothing they love to wear at home, which are old and worn out, but you just can't let it go. The older the clothes get, the more comfort they provide. So it is very important to keep some of your old clothes intact so that you can wear them at home and feel at ease because, at home, you just want to be happy and comfortable.

IELTS Cue Card - Model Answer 3: Describe a piece of clothing you wear most often

Memorable Introduction:

When someone very dear to you passes away, all that is left behind are their memories and their belongings. My grandmother was someone very close to my heart and when she passed away a few years ago, she left a big hole in me. I craved her love and care for a long time after her death and kept on looking at her sarees and photos just to keep her memory alive. Hence to keep her closer to me, I often wear a saree which she cherished and wore now and then for special occasions.

The essence of the piece of clothing:

When I first wore my grandmother’s saree, I could instantly smell her perfume and it felt like her warm embrace. The saree is a piece of cotton “ Dhakai Jamdani” which was gifted to my grandmother by my grandfather on their 50th anniversary. Among all the sarees she had, this saree held a very special spot, hence she wore it quite often for special occasions. I wanted to keep her memory intact and continue the legacy, hence I tried on her saree for my friend’s wedding once. It gave me so much comfort and assurance that I kept on wearing it for many more special occasions. Whenever I wear this saree, I feel like my grandmother is embracing me and giving me her best wishes. The saree is very beautiful and never fails to bring me a lot of compliments.

Impactful Ending:

I believe this saree is not only a source of memory to me, it is a big part of my heritage too. In this busy and materialistic world, where people hardly repeat their clothes, I chose to give more importance to my love for my grandmother and heritage. This saree is my way of staying true to myself and my heritage. Moreover, the warmth and comfort this piece of clothing provides me is irreplaceable, just like my sweet grandmother.

Part 3 of the IELTS speaking test: Follow-up questions

The last part of the IELTS English Test is the follow-up question section. The examiner tests your IELTS Speaking skills, and fluency in this section and tries to extract your true potential. You are asked some follow-up questions on the answer you gave in the IELTS Cue Card section, the answers to which should be kept brisk and short. So you must understand and practice answering follow-up questions as a part of your IELTS speaking practice. We have listed a few follow-up questions for your IELTS speaking topic with answers to your IELTS speaking questions.

IELTS exam preparation: Follow-up questions 1

Question: How does age impact your attire?

Answer: I believe that age should hardly affect someone’s sense of style or comfort. I have witnessed my mother staying on top of her styling game when it comes to her clothing, whereas I give importance to easy and comfortable clothes. Clothes can be a part of your identity, so it is very important to wear what you like, even when you get older. If you lose your sense of style and desire to dress, it means you are losing yourself. A beautiful piece of dress brings a smile to my face whenever I go to the mall for shopping. For me that moment of joy is irreplaceable.

IELTS exam preparation: Follow up questions 2 (From Model answer 1)

Question: Do you think weather and environment affect your sense of clothing?

Answer: Yes, I do understand that the weather and environment of a place can change an individual’s sense of style. Say, for example, my favorite piece of clothing is a cotton top and blue jeans, but I cannot wear them during the winter. My whole point of wearing this outfit is to stay comfortable, which would be rendered moot if I wear them during chilly weather. Hence, it is important to have favorite pieces of clothing for different seasons and environments.

IELTS exam preparation: Follow up questions 3

Question: What do you think is the difference between clothes and uniforms?

Answer: According to me, clothes define a person, whereas a uniform defines an organization. A uniform brings in a sense of discipline and resemblance in the people belonging to the same organization. It brings “uniformity” to a diverse genre of people. While all uniforms are clothes at the end, the motive behind these attires is very different from other clothes. Clothes are meant for styling, but uniforms are meant for showing respect for rules.
