The International English Language Test System, or IELTS exam is one of the most notable English language certification examinations that is accepted worldwide because of its legitimacy.  This examination has four sections: reading test, writing test, speaking test, and listening test. In this article, we'll focus on the speaking portion of the IELTS exam.

IELTS cue card: The main part of the IELTS speaking test:

The IELTS speaking test consists of a 10 to 15-minute face-to-face conversation between you and the examiner.

Three components make up the IELTS speaking exam:

  • Part 1- Introduction: The examiner will provide a brief introduction and ask you a series of standard questions concerning your experiences, interests, and personal life. This will last about 4 to 5 minutes of your IELTS speaking exam.
  • Part 2- Cue card: A task card with a specific topic will be handed to you. You will have one minute to prepare, after which you will speak continuously for one to two minutes on the assigned subject. In this part of the IELTS exam, the examiner will evaluate your ability to organize your thoughts, talk clearly, and employ a variety of vocabulary and grammatical structures.
  • Part 3- Two-way Discussion: The examiner and the candidate have a more in-depth conversation on topics covered in the cue card section. The candidates express their thoughts, discuss abstract concepts, and provide arguments or examples to support their positions. This will also last about 4 to 5 minutes.

Note that, for both the IELTS Academic and General modules, the IELTS speaking exam is identical.

How to answer an IELTS Cue Card during your IELTS speaking test?

  • You may significantly raise your score on the speaking test by strategically addressing the IELTS cue card questions.
  • When the examiner offers you the cue card in the IELTS speaking test, read it attentively and make sure you comprehend the subject matter and the particular job you are expected to do.
  • You will have one minute to prepare your response. Make good use of this time by outlining your main ideas or writing down a few crucial points. Make a list of the key points or concepts you wish to address in your response to your IELTS speaking test.
  • Speak slowly and with clarity. Try to use a range of vocabulary terms and idioms that are associated with the topic
  • Aim to avoid using a monotonous voice while you speak. Confidence and an effortless presentation style might raise your score.

Do not forget that in the IELTS cue card section, you can demonstrate your command of the English language with a speaking test. You may become more proficient at answering cue card questions by paying attention to these pointers and getting frequent practice through the IELTS practice test and IELTS sample test.

IELTS sample test topic: Describe A Difficult Task That You Completed at Work/Study That You Felt Proud Of

Your response to the cue card should be broken into smaller fragments: an introduction, key highlights, and a conclusion. Remember to talk fluently, use descriptive sentences with the right vocabulary and grammar structures, and paint a clear picture for the examiner in the two minutes allotted.

  • What was the task?

Start your answer by introducing the task you will be discussing.

You should mention the task's context, including the relevant subject or course.

Consequently, justify your difficulty with the job.

  • How did you complete it?

After a brief introduction of the task give further information about the assignment.

Make your answer interesting by describing the precise difficulties you encountered.

Mention your early impressions and ideas about taking on the work.

  • Why the task was difficult?

You should explain the actions you took to finish the assignment.

Describe any tactics or tools you employed to accomplish the task.

Draw attention to any important turning points or discoveries made along the way.

  • Why you were proud of the completion of the task?

Lastly, give a summary of the results you put so much effort into.

You should contemplate why doing the work made you feel proud.

Conclude your answer smoothly by mentioning any abilities or insights you gained from the task.

IELTS exam sample 1: Describe A Difficult Task That You Completed at Work/Study That You Felt Proud Of

Introduction:

Many of the assignments I've faced during my academic career have pushed and challenged me to aim for greatness. One assignment that strikes out in particular is finishing a challenging project for my college degree. The task involved comprehensive research and writing a thorough report on how human health is affected by climate change. The project involved me in scrutinizing the adverse effects of climate change on human health.

Describing Your Experience/Opinion/Interest:

Choosing an engaging and relevant topic was the first approach to starting the project. I selected climate change as my research area because it is a critical global issue. People in cities and towns are facing the consequences, from heat waves and wildfires to coastal storms and flooding. Almost every element of our life is impacted by the climate from our food sources to our transport infrastructure, from what clothes we wear, to where we go on holiday. It has a big effect on our way of life, our health, and our future.

Key highlights:

Before beginning my endeavor, I first published a comprehensive plan and timeline. I started reading books, searching the internet, and looking through a range of academic resources to gather data. However, I found this topic to be a little intimidating because of the wealth of knowledge about it. Accurate and up-to-date data took a lot of labor to compile. After enough data was gathered, the difficult step was organizing it rationally. Converting scientific data from a technical language into understandable English was a significant difficulty.

Conclusion:

The project was time-consuming but I was determined to finish it, so I worked for an extended period into the late hours at night. I felt good about myself after my assignment and got an outstanding grade. The experience taught me a lot about time management, problem-solving strategies, and perseverance. It also reaffirmed my desire to become an environmental scientist and fueled my interest in the field. Completing this difficult assignment was a significant turning point in my academic career.

IELTS exam sample 2: Describe A Difficult Task That You Completed at Work/Study That You Felt Proud Of

Introduction:

One of the most difficult projects I completed during my studies was completing my dissertation for the English literature degree I was pursuing at the time. The task required conducting comprehensive research on the role of mythology during the era of ancient works. I found it difficult since I had to arrange complex sources and combine them into a coherent thesis after doing a lot of research and analysis.

Describing Your Experience/Opinion/Interest:

I was anxious to begin my dissertation since there was so much historical material to go through. Examining mythology's applicability in history and its impact on the creation of cultural, religious, and societal values was the main goal. In this paper, I had to examine mythology, religion, and the roles that each play in society as separate and interrelated issues.  I had to spend a great deal of mental and physical resources searching through old newspapers, official documents, and other archives. Despite this, my passion for literature and the past kept me motivated to do the assignment.

Key highlights:

The topic's main goal was to investigate how mythology functioned in the past and how it affected many facets of their daily life. My trusted advisor was someone I spoke with frequently and who provided invaluable guidance and support. I began by breaking the task down into manageable chunks and making an organized plan. It was challenging to locate exceptional artifacts that offered new insights into prehistoric society. This discovery served as the basis for my dissertation and helped me create a compelling case.

Conclusion:

I was quite proud of myself and felt a sense of accomplishment when I handed over my dissertation to my professor.  I also got favorable feedback and encouragement from my professors which confirmed that my efforts had been worthwhile. The intellectual and emotional fulfillment I received from this work strengthened my fortitude to continue my studies in the field of English literature. As a result of the experience, I developed stronger research techniques, polished my critical thinking abilities, and improved my research methodologies.
