The IELTS exam is designed for people who want to move abroad in order to pursue international employment possibilities or gain entrance to foreign universities. The four sections on reading, writing, speaking, and listening are equally crucial whether you are writing for the Academic or General IELTS Training test. Academic and General Task 2 needs you to write a response to a particular argument or assertion. The time limit is 40 minutes, and the word count is 250 words.

Marking Criteria of IELTS Writing Exam Task 2

The four marking criteria are:

  • Task Achievement (25%)
  • Coherence and Cohesion (25%)
  • Lexical Resource (25%)
  • Grammatical Range and Accuracy (25%)
  1. Task Achievement: The task response or achievement criteria assesses a candidate's capacity to meet the requirements of the task. It also prioritizes whether or not the response to the prompt question was pertinent and easy to understand. This includes everything—from giving thorough answers to the questions to offering pertinent illustrations and evidence to support the arguments. Because of this, it requires that you maintain a steady focus throughout the response.
  2. Coherence and Cohesion: The applicant must be able to write in an orderly, comprehensible manner. Some ideas should be organized and presented in paragraph form to increase readability. Coherence can be created by using linking words to connect the ideas, and advancement must occur gradually without disrupting the flow.
  3. Lexical Resource: This standard assesses the test-taker's command of terminology. Success in this sector requires a balanced use of clear communication, appropriate spelling and tone, collocations, and a wide vocabulary.
  4. Grammatical Range and Accuracy: The test-taker's work is assessed based mostly on whether or not it uses a variety of sentence structures when assessing grammatical range and accuracy. There shouldn't be any recurring grammatical mistakes, and punctuation and verb tenses should be utilized appropriately.

IELTS Writing Essay: 6 Types of Essay

There are six main categories of IELTS essay subjects, each with a distinct format. If you fail to properly analyze the given topic and understand each style before organizing your response, your IELTS writing band score will suffer.

Discussion Essay: You can include instances to support your points of view when writing an essay with this format. Don't bring it up forcibly if it doesn't ask for your opinion explicitly.

  • Discuss both points of view and share your thoughts.

Advantage/Disadvantage Essay: For this type of essay, you must list the advantages and disadvantages of a particular subject. Your essay's main body should be balanced, with each paragraph discussing the benefits and drawbacks of the assigned topic. If the subject doesn't call for personal opinions, don't share them.

  • What are the advantages of this?
  • Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?

Problem/Solution Essay: For these essays, you must investigate the origins and effects of significant problems associated with your essay's subject. Writings of this kind shouldn't contain individual suggestions or beliefs.

  • What issues surround the subject? and how may they be resolved?
  • Discuss the causes and effects of the subject and provide solutions.

Balanced Opinion Essay: These types of essays require you to clearly state your opinions on the topic. You cannot support one side over the other in a debate, you must defend both equally. The essay's opening and closing paragraphs should express your viewpoint.

  • Discuss both sides
  • Give your opinion

Opinion Essay: You must compose an essay explaining your point of view on the given subject and stating whether or not you concur with it. Provide relevant information and reasons to persuade the examiner of your point of view. It is not possible to express dissent or partial agreement with the given issue.

  • What do you think?
  • Do you agree or not?
  • How much do you agree or disagree?

Direct Question Essay: This kind of essay poses one or more direct questions, to which you must provide a coherent, succinct essay-style response supported by pertinent examples.

  • Why is this case?
  • What can be done about this problem?

Some useful tips to answer IELTS Discussion+Opinion essay questions

You must discuss your viewpoint on a subject and give your opinion with supporting examples and evidence in the IELTS discussion-opinion essays. Utilizing a well-defined framework and proficient writing techniques might enhance your likelihood of success!

  • Before writing, create a mind map for five minutes. Give yourself some time to consider the points you want to make and the best way to present them. Before beginning to write, try to take some notes.
  • When debating two points of view, speak in an unbiased manner while expressing your position and giving equal weight to either side of the dispute.
  • The introduction should be no more than fifty words.
  • Make sure each body paragraph provides a 100-word explanation of the primary idea.
  • It is best to have a shorter conclusion than an introduction.
  • Transitional phrases and terms can help your essay flow naturally and let the reader know when you are changing topics.
  • Complete the given essay using the format provided.

IELTS writing task 2 topics:

Some people say cultural traditions are destroyed when they are used as money-making attractions aimed at tourists. Others say this is the only way to save such traditions. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Understanding the question:

Before you start writing, thoroughly read the question to determine what kind of essay is needed.

In the IELTS writing task, you must select the category to which your subjects from IELTS writing issue 2 belong. To accomplish that, you must review the language in the instructions. The directions are to "Give your own opinion" and "Discuss both these views." Thus, after comparing and contrasting these two points of view, it can be concluded that the essay belongs in the discussion essay category and is an opinion essay because the prompt "Give your own opinion" implies that you have to share your subjective thoughts about the topic. Therefore, the essay might be classified as a "Discussion and Opinion" based essay.

Structure of the essay:

  • Introduction: Rephrase the question in the introduction. Explain that you will talk about both arguments. Give your opinion since it has been asked.
  • Body Paragraph 1: Describe the argument you are discussing. Give instances to back up your claims.
  • Body Paragraph 2: Mention the other point of view. Give instances to back up your claim.
  • Conclusion: Restate the question in your own words and convey your thoughts.

IELTS writing task 2 topics with answers:

Some people say cultural traditions are destroyed when they are used as money-making attractions aimed at tourists. Others say this is the only way to save such traditions. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Band 6

It is certain that cultural traditions keep local economic growth and draw tourists from all over the world. Some people believe that if things are altered to draw tourists, they might be destroyed. Some, on the other hand, believe that these cultural attractions will disappear if we don't use them for tourism. In the paragraph that follows, I'll go over both arguments. Personally, I tilt toward the second opinion.

Every nation's economy depends on tourism, hence attempts are made to draw in visitors. A large number of people make their living solely on tourism. People that work in the food industry, hotel industry, transportation industry, and many other industries rely on tourism. To draw in visitor, presentation is crucial, and in order to present well, a few changes is required. We need tourist, hence we must make these traditions charming to them. First, tourism supports our economy, and second, it gives us the opportunity to share our culture with a wide range of nations.

But, cultural custom lose their special qualities when they are used as tourist attractions. It can sometimes cause cultural customs to come to an end. I think that because culture and customs are deeply established, even little, minor changes cannot seriously harm or negatively impact them. Natural laws dictate that things change, therefore all we can do is watch that they are done so carefully so as to preserve the key elements of culture.

In summary, in order to preserve cultural tradition, we must make some of them desirable to modern tourist. If we don't succeed, we will completely lose our cultural heritage and tourism.

Highlights: Bold highlights indicate potential cohesive devices or connecting words that were not appropriate. Italics and underlined highlights indicate word repetition and poor word choice and construction. Grammatical errors and missing articles are indicated by words in italics.

Note that this essay does not state both views properly. It is leaned only towards one side of the opinion and discussed which might lead you to a lower band score.

Band 7

Some believe that cultural traditions are destroyed when they are used as money-making attractions aimed at tourists. Others think that this is the only way to keep the custom ongoing. In my opinion, the two perspectives above are partially accurate.

On the one hand, we must acknowledge that it is a tool to raise public awareness. We must take action to introduce cultural tradition to a wider audience, as some have already been forgotten in the rush to modernity. The public can become aware of them and remember them in this way. Furthermore, monetary gains may also contribute to the growth or upkeep of a particular regional convention. A prime example is the traditional folk dance known as “Bihu” in Assam, India, which has been commercialized through paid performances.

Yet it can also have negative effects, thus extra reasonable steps should be done to protect traditions. In order to maximize earnings, cultural practices are often modified to meet the tastes of modern consumers. One possible risk is that these custom could one day be turned to the basic items that modern people pleasure which would be another means for them to slowly fade. Meanwhile, the government should have primary responsibility for adequately conserving the traditions. Laws should be made public, students should be taught about different customs and how to stop them from being destroyed.

In brief, even while funding cultural activities helps prevent them from irreversibly being lost, it is still important to be conscious of the threats involved and there are some safer methods to achieve this. Even if they might have a lot of drawbacks, I believe that one of the only ways to support the future generation in preserving traditional cultures is by commercial practices.

Highlights: Bold highlights denote potential cohesive devices or connecting words that were not appropriate. Italicized words denote incorrect word choice, word construction, and word repetition. Grammar errors and missing articles are indicated in italics with highlighted highlights.

Note that this essay has a better flow than the last one with suitable examples.

Band 9

Some individuals think cultural traditions are destroyed when they are used as money-making attractions aimed at tourists while others believe it is the sole way to keep our historical heritage preserved. This essay will evaluate both perspectives before proceeding to a conclusion.

First of all, traditional customs lose their uniqueness and original nature when they are turned into tourist attractions. This desire to attract tourists by reducing the authenticity of the culture has put unnecessary strain on indigenous customs. Most notably, as tourism becomes more commercialized, a growing number of individuals are traveling without any thought for ensuring the sustainability of the tourism industry. As a result, tourism has harmed several holy places jeopardizing their cultural relevance.

Uttarakhand state saw a disastrous flood in 2013 that resulted in landslides and catastrophic floods, making it the biggest natural calamity to strike the nation since the 2004 tsunami caused by negligent road construction. The building of new hotels and resorts on riverbanks, together with more than 70 hydroelectric projects nearby that exacerbated the flooding, was the primary cause of the Kedarnath disaster.

However, there are strong arguments in favor of the notion that the only way to preserve cultural traditions is by earning money through them. Firstly, growing cultural tourism has been crucial to provide numerous financial advantages to sustain traditional customs. To be more precise, arts and culture tourism lures travelers who spend money on lodging, meals, and access to cultural attractions. Consequently, the money received from these sorts of events can be reinvested into upholding these customs. Additionally, as the tourism industry increases, an abundance of employment is produced in a range of industries, including transportation and tour operators. As a result, this minimizes unemployment and gives citizens an array of resources.

In conclusion, using cultural traditions as money-making attractions may have some disadvantages but I believe that tourism is one of the best methods to keep our cultural customs alive. To optimize their beneficial effects on conserving a nation's cultural legacy, it is crucial to guarantee the true authenticity and sanity of these customs via careful surveillance.

Highlights: There are no grammatical or spelling problems or word repetitions. The sentences are well-written, and the vocabulary is advanced.

Yes, you are welcome to voice your personal opinions in your Task 2 essays. It's imperative to do so in a supported and balanced manner, though. Give arguments and examples to support your positions. How stringent is their word count policy?

Writing longer or shorter than 250 words won't get you in trouble, but don't go too far either way.
