When appearing in the IELTS Writing test section, you will be sitting for 60 minutes and it includes two separate tasks with distinct formats for Academic (students) and General Training (working professionals) versions. Despite the variations, both types contain two writing tasks in which writing task 2 shares a commonality as it requires writing essays.

IELTS Writing Task 2 is a critical component of the IELTS exam and is often seen as a decisive factor for many test-takers. This section evaluates your ability to compose a clear, well-organized essay. For beginners, some of these concepts might be unfamiliar, so it's important to delve into how to effectively approach IELTS Writing Task 2.

Assessment Criteria to Remember: Writing Task 2

Apparently, Writing Task 2 will be graded based on four different factors which will each have a weightage of 25% in the overall IELTS writing band score. To get the highest band score, you must properly comprehend these concepts. So, do not wait and dig into these criteria:

Task Achievement: To properly answer the question, you should know to provide precise information and address the query directly while staying on topic. If you deviate from the topic, it will lessen your overall marks. Be sure to craft your response in such a way that all the parts are answered and adhere to a minimum of 250 words.

Coherence and Cohesion: You will be judged on how effectively you structure information. Your skill in selecting the right vocabulary, linking words smoothly, avoiding unnecessary repetition of information/ words, and making your answer clear and comprehensible matters.

Lexical Resource: Try demonstrating a command of an advanced and varied vocabulary. Alongside this, employing clear and straightforward language while avoiding spelling and grammatical errors will enhance your performance in this segment of the evaluation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: For scoring high in this category, it is ideal for you to use a diverse set of correct grammatical structures and tenses. You should also use proper punctuation and sentence structure including the subject-verb agreement.

Types of Essays in IELTS Writing Task 2

In the IELTS Writing Task 2, there are six distinct types of essay questions, and you will need to respond to one of these types based on the topic provided. Each type of essay question necessitates a specific approach and structure. To effectively tackle this task, it’s crucial to first understand the various types of essay questions you might encounter. Familiarizing yourself with these types will help you determine the appropriate method and organization for your essay, ensuring that you address the question correctly and meet the exam’s criteria.

Opinion-based:  An opinion-based essay in the IELTS Writing Task 2 expects you to articulate your stance on a particular issue or situation. You need to show your standpoint by either supporting or opposing the statement presented in the prompt. This type of essay requires you to express your personal viewpoint and justify your agreement or disagreement with the given assertion which is why they are often known as agree/ disagree essays.

Discussion: In this type of essay, you will have to present and briefly examine all aspects of a given statement or argument. However, you may also be required to clearly state your opinion, either supporting or opposing a side. If the prompt does not specifically ask for your opinion, make sure not to include your personal views in your response.

Advantages/ Disadvantages: As the name suggests, such essays ask you to note down the advantages and disadvantages of the given issue. At times, you will be expected to write if the dvantages are greater than the disadvantages or so.

Balanced opinion: For balanced opinion essays, you will reflect on the argument and express your partial agreement with one side while not disapproving of the other. The point is to stay neutral and choose one side to which you agree more but not completely disagree with the other side.

Problem/ solution or Cause effect: In a cause/effect or issue/solution essay, you will have to identify or explore the sources of a problem while also coming up with viable solutions.

Two Questions or Direct Question: Here you will have one or more direct questions related to a particular topic to which you have to write answers in separate body paragraphs but in an essay format with suitable examples.

Various ways to generate ideas in an IELTS essay

When you're pressed for time to generate ideas for your Task 2 IELTS essay, having a reliable strategy that you’ve practiced is crucial. Everyone’s thought process is unique, so a method that suits one person might not work for another. It's also beneficial to have multiple techniques at your disposal, as different types of questions might call for different approaches. Being well-versed in at least two methods will prepare you for any question you encounter. Let's look at the four main techniques for generating and discovering good ideas:

  1. Brainstorming: You are supposed to analyze the question and rapidly generate as many relevant ideas as you can. However, the downside is that you might end up with a large number of ideas, leaving you with insufficient time to organize and select the most pertinent ones before writing the essay.
  2. Friends Technique: If you use this method, you will first imagine discussing the question casually with a friend and write down your immediate responses. It is effective because it helps you form natural ideas and use natural language instead of complex language.
  3. Mind-mapping: It provides a structured way to organize the ideas by connecting to specific elements of the question. While there can be an overload of ideas, it is efficacious for those who are accustomed to using mind maps.
  4. Using examples: Start by generating specific examples related to the question, drawing from personal experiences or information from newspapers, magazines, and online sources you have encountered. Try to think of examples that fit the question, and remain plausible, although there is a high chance that the examiner would not fact-check them.

A lot of places in the world rely on tourism as a main source of income. Unfortunately, tourism can also be a source of problems if it is not well managed. What are the advantages and disadvantages?: IELTS Writing Task 2 topic

Identifying the essay type

For the prompt that has been given on tourism, the instruction keywords follow “What are the advantages and disadvantages” which clearly denotes asking about the merits and demerits of tourism while keeping in consideration its role in the national economy. Without much analysis, it is evident that this type of essay comes under the advantage/ disadvantage essay type.

Significantly, there are two types of advantage/ disadvantage essays,

  1. One asks you to position the viewpoint if the advantages outweigh the disadvantages.
  2. The other one asks you to simply write down the advantages and disadvantages.

For this sample topic, we will write according to the second option, i.e. no. b, as it only asks about sharing the main points in the form of advantages and disadvantages.

Structure of the Advantage-Disadvantage Essay

Upon identifying the essay type, it is time for us to familiarize you with the structure of an advantage/ disadvantage essay:

Introduction: Paraphrase the given information and answer the question asked in the topic statement.

Body Paragraph 1: You can write about the advantages and give specific reasons with examples to support them.

Body Paragraph 2: You can discuss the disadvantages of the argument with relevant examples.

Conclusion: Summarize and give a well-rounded conclusion.

Tourism have been a important topic of discussion, for many year, with people have opposite opinions on if it is good or give bad consequence. True that some country do benefit from tourism and rest are against it to stop. This different mindset show that there exist divers standpoints on the issues.

From helping increase a country's income significantly to taking it’s international reach high, tourism pave the way for all of this. More visibleness often leads to opportunities for the people in the country who live there such as educational offers from foreign universities. Also, tourism has been helpful in drive of investment in developing the infrastrucure that make a city full of activities and facilities.

In the opposite hand, tourism has being presenting many challenges. It is known to contribute for traffic problems and over crowded, which can impact negatively to the residents living in the local area. When the coming of tourists is leading to increase in the prices of item in local shops, a trend is noticed in many country. Over time an increase in tourism can even lead to overpopulation, with the visitor and tourists decision to relocate permanently.

Tourism leads to create challenges which offer benefits that cannot be ignored. Although it present many challenge, it brings benefits that is not deniable. If advantage are increasing and potential issue are reduction, management of tourism is necesary.

Band 7

In recent times, many countries have relied on tourism as a primary source of income. Nonetheless, improper management of tourism can result in serious issues. Although there are positive and bad sides in tourism, the benefit of tourism bring financial progress to country.

On the one hand, if a country focus on tourism as for source of income, it can unlock potential at different level. When tourist have a positive experience they share their enthusiasm with family and friends, which help attract more visitors for add in revenue. If a country is excellent in providing service to the visitors, there can be more investor coming to this country. In a destination with healthy environment, tourist can choose to do business which gives rise to more job opportunities and reduce unemployment. Thus, the tourism sector offers considerable prospects for economic growth and development.

On other part, relaxing of border control lets the entry of people from unsafe regions potentially making them join bad activities like drug deals and smuggle. This influx leads to much more criminal activity in the host place and demanding increased effort for law and security. The revenue obtained from tourism could be needed to be spent in additional expense including spending money for improved protection and using crime prevention measures. Even if tourism is a lucrative industry, it brings complex issue at times that require careful management to stop risks.

In conclusion, it is seen tourists from higher-risk countries might engage in harmful activities,  yet there are notable advantages to allowing open borders for bringing investors to develop the country's economy.

Views on the essay: There are certain grammar and tense errors which are highlighted in italics and underlined. In italics, there are very few mistakes in the usage of appropriate words at some places that come under the lexical resource. The progression of ideas and essay is good, and there are minimal mistakes in the connecting words which come under cohesion and coherence.

Band 9

The tourism sector is undergoing remarkable expansion, linking individuals from all corners of the globe. It encompasses a broad spectrum of services, including lodging, transportation, gastronomy, entertainment, and various ancillary industries. Nevertheless, tourism can also introduce challenges that may adversely affect a country if not meticulously managed. This essay will critically analyze both the merits and drawbacks of tourism to deliver a nuanced conclusion.

The tourism sector provides several crucial advantages. Firstly, it significantly bolsters the national economy through the influx of foreign currency, which is reinvested in infrastructure development and heritage conservation. Secondly, it creates employment across diverse domains, including hospitality, gastronomy, and artisanal crafts, thereby mitigating unemployment and poverty, particularly in developing regions. Additionally, tourism facilitates cultural exchange, as international travelers, attracted by local attractions and cuisine, generate reciprocal interest and further engagement between nations.

The lucrative allure of tourism can attract numerous explorers, yet inadequate oversight may lead to severe consequences. Without stringent regulations, an excessive influx of visitors can jeopardize historical structures and public spaces. Additionally, high tourist volumes can damage the environment through littering and non-compliance with local ordinances. Inept management might also encourage illicit activities, such as trafficking and the unauthorized trade of antiquities. Locals may exploit tourists' unfamiliarity with regional customs and laws, while rising accommodation demand can drive hotel expansion, leading to deforestation and overexploitation of natural resources, thus disrupting the ecological balance.

In summary, the advantages offered by the tourism sector significantly overshadow its deficiencies. While the challenges associated with tourism can be effectively managed through strategic interventions by governmental bodies and civic participation, the sector's contributions to national economic growth and the enhancement of public welfare are well-established.
