Essay writing is a common task in the second portion of the IELTS writing exam for both the Academic (for students) and General Training (for working professionals) categories. The IELTS essay topics of the IELTS Writing Task 2 require you to compose an essay in response to a specific point of view, argument, or problem. Your essay should be written in a formal tone, of at least 250 words and should take no more than 40 minutes to complete.

The purpose of the IELTS Writing exam is to evaluate a variety of writing abilities, such as how well you compose an appropriate response, arrange the concepts, and appropriately employ a variety of terms and language.

The four main marking criteria for IELTS writing task 2:

The easiest way to fail is to be ignorant of basic ideas. You'll do much better and succeed if you can provide the examiner with what they're looking for if you know what they want. First, let's look at the IELTS Writing assessment criteria:

  1. Task Achievement: The goal of this component is to effectively address the inquiry. You must be able to properly convey the information and respond to inquiries while staying on the subject. You have to write at least 250 words, follow the essay format, and fulfill all requirements for answering the question type.
  2. Coherence and Cohesion: Your ability to organize content will be evaluated in this part. The majority of your grade will be determined by how well you use the appropriate words, link the paragraphs, avoid repetition of information and terminology, and ensure that your response is clear. Make an effort to write less complicated and long sentences.
  3. Lexical Resource: This section evaluates your proficiency with terminology. You can do better on this area of the test by using clear language and avoiding spelling and word structure errors.
  4. Grammatical Accuracy and Range: This section evaluates your use of several acceptable tenses and grammatical structures. You should also use appropriate punctuation and sentence structure, paying attention to subject-verb agreement, phrase structure, and tense.

Types of essays in IELTS Writing Task 2:

Advantage and Disadvantage Essay: You must address both the advantages and disadvantages of a certain topic while writing an essay in this format. Your opinion may also need to be expressed in an essay of this type. If so, you have to say what you think; if not, you have to say nothing and not provide an opinion.

Opinion-Based Essay: In this case, you must state your opinions—whether you agree or disagree—about a particular problem. If you agree with the argument, don't discuss the disagreement; just state your case.

Balanced Opinion Essay: For these essays, you have to talk about a point of contention and show that you don't disagree with some of the arguments made against you. You have to pick a side that you agree with more than the other while remaining somewhat in line with the other; you can't be objective.

Discussion Essay: You will be required to address both sides of a statement or argument that has been presented to you. You may be asked to discuss a point of view that you agree or disagree with. Please remember that you should only offer your opinion if asked directly.

Problem-Solution Essay: For this type of essay, you must determine the root cause of the issue raised in the question and suggest suitable fixes.

Two Questions or Direct Questions: This essay aims to provide an article that is clear and concise while providing pertinent examples. You will be required to directly respond to one or more of the inquiry's questions.

Can you use Quotes or Idioms in your IELTS essay?

Idioms are defined as a collection of words established by usage (such as "over the moon," "see the light," etc.) as having a meaning not obvious from those of the individual words. English has a large number of idioms that are used often in social conversations, media, and commercial settings. Since idioms are typically used informally, they should not be included in the IELTS essay writing task.

Clichés, idioms, proverbs, and overused words ought to be avoided because they are commonly used in speech. These consist of expressions such as:  Off the top of my head, Old is gold, Love is blind, The grass is always greener on the other side, A friend in need is a friend indeed, It cost an arm and a leg, and many more.

The IELTS General Training and Academic Writing Task 2 assesses your essay-writing skills. It is inappropriate to use informal language in writing assignment 2, just as it is not permissible in formal letter writing or report writing. When expressing your thoughts and ideas, it is preferable to speak in your own words. However, if you want to utilize quotes, it is best to paraphrase them.

IELTS writing task 2 topics:

Nowadays, there are a large number of coffee shops and fast-food vendors on high streets and in town centers. Why are there so many of these outlets? What effect is this having on the society?

Understanding the question:

Understanding the type of essay you are writing is essential because they all have different formats before you commence writing. We take into consideration two elements when analyzing the question: keywords and action words. It is very important to understand the common phrases, words, and synonyms used in problem-solving essays.

The following are the main terms and their synonyms to understand in any problem-solution essay.

Problem: issues, resulting, situation

Cause: reasons, why

Resolution: resolve, confront, rectify, enhance, implement, resolve, avoid.

In this question, Why are there so many of these outlets? What effect is this having on the society?, the action words are “Why” and “What”.

This essay requires you to thoroughly explain the issue raised by the assigned topic which is the increased number of outlets and consequently explain the effect of having so many outlets in society. Ensure that the first paragraph of the main body addresses the problem and its cause, and the second paragraph discusses the effects.

Structure of the essay:

Let us now examine the basic format for IELTS problem-solution essays.

  • Introduction: Rephrase your question. Write the primary issue and its related solution.
  • Body 1 (Problem or Cause): Key concept: Identify the issue or reason. Give a thorough description of the issue. Add if there are any relevant examples.
  • Body 2 (Effects): Key concept - Write the effects. Give a thorough justification of the effects. Add if there are any relevant examples.
  • Summarize your thoughts: Provide if there are any suggestions.

The above structure will culminate in a four-paragraph essay that is well-balanced.

IELTS writing task 2 topics with answers:

Nowadays, there are a large number of coffee shops and fast-food vendors on high streets and in town centers. Why are there so many of these outlets? What effect is this having on the society?

Band 6:

The food service sector has grown greatly in recent years. causing a rise in the quantity of cafes and locations for street food. The reason behind this increase and how they impact modern society will be covered in the piece that follows.

To begin with, the coffee industry is in high demand since individuals of all age enjoy drinking coffee. As a result, a variety of coffee kinds have been created, such as change in coffee thickness and the location of coffee shops for young people and older people in the morning. In addition, these stores are turning into favorite spots for youth and young adults as well as locations for chats and reunions.

Another thing is shops take up infamous towns to satisfy the growing food and cultural demands of today's young. Student who leave their hometowns to pursue opportunities overseas will need to balance their personal and academic lives. Because they don't have enough time to prepare meals from scratch in that situation, they can buy food from nearby supermarkets and save a ton of time. As a result, these kinds of circumstances helps merchants from opening an increasing number of workspaces and making large profits.

Second, many of them are addicted to fast food because of its taste, and fast food is the young generation's saver. However, because the products used in cooking are not hygienic, eating it can have negative effects on one's health and cut one's life expectancy. Given this, many of them often go to these restaurants because that is the way people think. One huge pattern among the current age is their love of fast foods.

In closing, even if the fast-food industry is viable a greater number of people are prone to catching fatal illnesses in the future.

Highlights: Bold highlights indicate potential cohesive devices or connecting words that were not appropriate. Word repetition and poor word choice and construction are indicated by italics and underlined highlights. Grammatical errors and missing articles are indicated by words in italics. Note that the essay structure is haphazard and suitable examples with a logical flow and a neat conclusion are missing.

Band 7:

Over the past ten years, eating patterns have undergone significant daily changes. There are a lot of fast-food restaurants and cafeteria in well-known towns and cities, and they focus on how they influence social interactions. In the following paragraphs, I will discuss the viable points of view and their implications.

The majority of individuals these days live hectic lives. The people have limited break times due to their high workload and need to speed up everything. This ultimately causes people to gobble up fast food that is readily available on the street. Additionally, a lot of people regularly consume coffee because it contains caffeine, which helps them stay attentive and concentrate better at work. Aside from this, urban areas are locations where the majority of people like spending their free time, thus it makes sense that they would be drawn to this food shops. For instance, street food vendors are well-known in places like Mumbai and Ahmedabad, particularly those that are close to colleges and schools. These vendors even operates throughout the clock.

Health issues are the main repercussions of this problem. First of all, food on the streets usually fried and contains a lot of oil. People end up becoming obese and having cholesterol problems as a result. Second, excessive coffee use is linked with various issues, including irregular sleep patterns. For instance, research indicates that a high caffeine intake can aggravate anxiety-related symptoms.

In conclusion, people who lead busy lives tend to feel the need to eat easily accessible food, and also more businesses are opening up that sell fast food and carbonated beverages, which increases employment opportunities. However, this also means that a greater number of people are getting unhealthy as a result of consuming fast food, therefore young people need to limit their intake of junk food to keep healthy.

Highlights: Bold highlights denote potential cohesive devices or connecting words that were not appropriate. Italicized words denote incorrect word choice, word construction, and word repetition. Grammar errors and missing articles are indicated in italics with highlighted highlights. Note that this essay has a better flow than the last one with suitable examples.

Band 9:

The prevalence of fast-food restaurants and coffee shops in towns and cities has become a striking occurrence in today's culture. This essay examines the factors that contributed to the rise in such networks and discusses the effects they have on public health and social dynamics.

First and foremost, the fast-paced aspect of modern life is an important element in the spread of fast-food businesses. These merchants provide swiftly accessible meals and beverages that can be consumed on the move to satisfy the impulsive needs of their clients. Rising globalization has also resulted in a standardization of tastes. Popular food and beverage franchises engage to consumers looking for consistency and comfort in their devouring experiences by providing familiarity and comfort across many locations. In addition to least, the increase in office buildings and commercial centers stimulated by urbanization has given these businesses access to a wider clientele. All these factors have forced us to live a life that is perpetually sedentary.

Furthermore, one of the least healthy foods that people can eat is processed food. The majority of the substances contained in this diet are devoid of calories and lack important nutrients like vitamins and minerals that are needed to maintain basic metabolism. This is why eating this food causes the body to develop potentially fatal diseases. The majority of the essences utilized in the texture and production of fast food are known carcinogens, which over time can cause the development of deadly illnesses like cancer. In particular, those who rely more on these junk foods for their diet are more likely to develop type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity, and other ailments.

In summary, due to globalization restaurants and fast food eateries are emerging but depending on them not only leads to a sedentary lifestyle but also has long-term harmful effects like the onset of carcinogenic diseases.

Highlights: This essay is well-written and organized in terms of flow, fluency, grammar, large vocabulary, connecting words, and sentence structure.

Frequently Asked Questions

How are the essays evaluated?

The evaluation process is identical to that of the IELTS exams. Your score is based on four elements. Task success entails relevance, coherence, and cohesiveness, which entails proficient paragraph construction, effective use of syntax and vocabulary, and linkers.

Is it possible to practice these essays and receive a band 8+?

There is a considerable likelihood that questions on the IELTS will be repeated. Since these essay questions were carefully chosen from IELTS test papers from prior years, there's a good chance you'll see them on the test.

What distinguishes coherence from cohesion precisely?

Another name for coherence is logical paragraphing. There should only be one main concept in each paragraph. Cohesion is the capacity to establish a connection between concepts. You should be able to use the right linking words to convey ideas that are similar and in opposition to one another.
