18 Nov 2024

US universities have 3 major intakes throughout the year—Spring (January), Summer (May), and Fall (September). Regardless, US intakes for international students might also depend on the specific university and course which you’re choosing. Let us understand the complete cycles of admission intake in USA in detail so that you can make an informed decision when choosing a course.

How many intakes are there in the USA?

Intake simply means the number of students that are accepted during a particular cycle of admission in a given academic year.

Universities in the US lay down specific time periods for when a bunch of students start studying a certain course together. And these months are usually January, May, and September.

You can alternatively hear or read the words Spring, Summer, and Fall intakes based on the season which essentially means the same.

Intake PeriodIntake MonthApplications OpenApplication Deadline
Spring IntakeJanuary 2025February 2024July – November 2024
Summer IntakeMay 2025May 2024late February – early March 2025
Fall IntakeSeptember 2025late September 2024January 2025

More admission intakes in the USA are beneficial for the students locally as well as internationally.

In case you cannot apply during one time of the year, you’ll have the option to apply during another available intake instead of waiting for a whole year to apply.

One more reason why many intakes are offered by US universities is that you can choose an intake based on the time of the year you wish to graduate.

Certan industries have seasonal hiring patterns and aligning your graduation with them can increase your chances of getting a better opportunity.

Fall Intake in USA (September/October Intake)

This intake is the most popular one among international students. The fall intake in USA is usually during September. Although, sometimes October intakes in universities in the USA are common too.

It will start in August/September 2025 and the deadlines will likely be September-December 2025. However, the deadlines may get extended until early January 2025.

Almost all universities offer this intake in the US, and here’s the timeline you should follow if you’re planning to join for Fall 2025.

Month/ YearProcess
By April – June 2024

Shortlist your universities, understand their application processes in depth, and gather all the information about the tuition fees/student loans/scholarships.

Also start gathering all the required documents.

May – July 2025Acceptance of I-20, schedule for visa appointments and interviews
August 2025Make travel arrangements and fly to the USA (Tickets & Departure)
September 2025Orientation week and the beginning of classes

The Fall 2025 intake is the best time to apply because Indian universities offer you your degrees until April or May after which you can easily start your application process. Most courses in US universities are available during this period and most of their scholarship applications also open during this time.

Spring Intake in USA (January Intake)

Spring intake is another popular period where universities accept applications.

Since the required time to prepare all your documents and appear for standardized tests have already passed, January intake can be a good option if you’re running late and have missed the Fall 2025 intake.

While the applications for Fall intake are still open, you must definitely skip to prepare for Spring intake in the USA. January intake in universities in the USA started in February 2024 and is open until November 2024.

Here’s the timeline that you can follow for the Spring 2025 intake.

Summer Intake in USA (May Intake)

Summer intake in the USA is for some limited courses but still a good option for students who wish to start their program in the middle of an academic year.

The applications for summer intake at universities in USA opened around May 2024. And the deadlines for applying fall in late February to early March of 2025.

Here’s a timeline you can follow when looking to apply in the Summer 2025 intake.

Is the intake right for you?

One good thing about Summer intakes is that you’re likely to face lesser competition when applying during this time. So if your university offers the course you want in May intake, you can choose it.

Some Summer intake universities in USA might try to finish the course more quickly and you’ll graduate early, while the learning environment will be focussed too due to a smaller batch size.

But some other factors to consider are that the tuition fees will be different, you will have the pressure to complete the course within a shorter time limit, and lesser extracurricular activities might be taking place.

So it is best to decide as per your study goals and interests. Our consultants at D-Vivid can help you narrow down on universities, choose the best intake period that aligns with your career goals, assist you with visa applications, and more! So if you’re confused about any step in the study abroad process, D-Vivid is the right place to come.

Differences Between Fall, Spring, & Summer Intakes

The clear and simple difference between all 3 admission intakes in the USA are the time of the year when their applications open. Fall intakes have the most amount of courses to choose from while Summer intakes offer the least amount of courses (mostly language and diploma courses).

The competition however, is maximum during the Fall intake, followed by the Spring intake. Summer intakes have the least amount of competition so they’re a good choice if your degree program is offering intakes during May month.

How to Choose the Right Intake For You?

To choose the best intake that actually suits you, understand your study goals and whether you’re actually completely ready to apply in a particular intake period.

Each US intake for international students has its own unique benefits. The fall intake has a larger cohort of courses available to choose from, and more extracurriculars included in it.

The spring intake has lesser applicants and you’ll be able to enjoy personalized attention in your learning. You can opt for it if you need more time to prepare yourself before applying.

The summer intake has the least amount of competition which also matches the negligible courses which are offered during this term. But your course will also be shorter and you can choose it to accelerate your studies.

Lastly, just consider how ready you are to apply, how much intensity and time you want to finish your course, how good it is for you financially, and whether or not there are other opportunities like research.

When confused about which term to apply in, a study advisor like D-Vivid consultant can help you choose the best intake period for you.
