Some people believe that allowing children to make their own choices on everyday matters(such as food, clothes, and entertainment) is likely to result in a society of individuals who only think about their own wishes. Other people believe that it is important for children to make decisions about matters that affect them. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion: IELTS Writing Task

The internationally renowned IELTS exam consists of four elementary sections: Writing, Reading, Speaking, and Listening. The two sections of the writing portion on the Academic and General Tests are comprised of Tasks 1 and 2. As part of the IELTS Writing Task 2, the essay topics prompt you to write a response to a certain argument, point of view, or issue. Your essay should be at least 250 words long, written formally, and completed in no more than 40 minutes.

This article will cover the various essay topics, how to approach them properly, and some examples of task two topics and responses.

4 criteria of the IELTS scoring system: writing task 2

Task Achievement:

  • This criterion assesses your capacity to put forward relevant queries, create relevant ideas, answer them, arrange your views logically, and conclude.
  • Create incredible insights. Construct sentences that address the given subject.
  • Answer the questions with precision.
  • Properly wrap up your essay by summarizing your key ideas and making a conclusion sentence.
  • Ensure your explanations are understandable and have enough evidence and examples to support your statements.

Coherence and Cohesion:

  • Coherence is the logical and seamless flow of ideas in your writing. Cohesion, on the other hand, assesses how well you use connectors, transition words, and pronouns in your writing.
  • Sort your ideas into paragraphs in a logical manner.
  • Make sure each paragraph focuses on a single concept.
  • Use connecting phrases (e.g., firstly, in contrast, hence, to summarize) to connect theories effectively.

Lexical Reference:

  • This evaluates your vocabulary knowledge.
  • Make use of a wide range of terms, including some unusual ones.
  • Be mindful of correct spelling and word construction to avoid errors.

Grammatical Accuracy and Range:

  • This criterion evaluates your understanding of and ability to use a variety of grammatical structures.
  • Employ a range of verb tenses and syntactical structures to showcase your versatility.
  • For better readability, use appropriate punctuation.
  • Make sentences that are free of errors.

IELTS Writing Task Types of Essay:

Only one of the six types of essays you will write, depending on the allotted topic. The approach and framework are made to satisfy the demands of the particular type of essay question. As a result, we must first unerstand the various essay formats.

Essay TypesMeaningCommon Question Prompts
1. Opinion EssaysYou can use these articles to talk about your ideas or differences of opinion on a certain topic. Whether you agree with it or not is up to you, but you should choose a side.

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

2. Discussion EssaysYou should touch on both sides of the dispute in brief. However, you could be asked to state whether you agree or disagree with anything.Discuss both points of view and share your thoughts.

3. Problem Solution EssaysYou must both identify or investigate the underlying causes of a problem in a cause/effect essay and offer workable remedies. What issues surround the subject? and how may they be resolved?

Discuss the causes and effects of the subject and provide solutions.
4. Advantage Disadvantages Essays

You have to discuss both the advantages and disadvantages of a particular subject in this essay.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of X?

Discuss the benefits and drawbacks of X.

5. Balanced Opinion EssaysThese essays demand a balanced viewpoint. It is your responsibility to show that you can agree with the opposing viewpoint without completely disagreeing with it and that you have a well-rounded position.

What do you think about this subject?

Talk about your opinions on this.

6. Direct Question EssayIn this scenario, you will be required to compose an essay-style response with pertinent examples in response to a direct question.

For what reasons is X the case? How can it be made better?

Why do individuals X? What are the repercussions?

  • How to Use Good Examples in your IELTS essay writing?

Writing an essay for the IELTS requires you to develop and support your points in the body paragraphs. Writing particular instances and related arguments is the best way to do this.

  • Your core concept should be brief, easy to understand, and realistic-looking. The example provided should be relevant to the task's topic. It must not be vague and unclear.
  • A good example in an IELTS essay should be: relevant, realistic, intelligent, and carefully placed.
  • Personal experiences are acceptable but take care that the essay doesn't come across as casual.
  • Names of businesses, universities, newspapers, research projects, and locations (cities or countries) can all be utilized.
  • For band 9, answer the topic with a viewpoint that is thoroughly defined and supported by well-developed concepts.

Kind of examples that can be used:

It is advised to avoid personal examples. You can give examples from a newspaper report, survey poll, reports, magazines, and journals. Also, avoid using percentages or data because the examiner cannot check its authenticity or verify the data.

Sample topic

Children often learn from the adults around them subconsciously. Discuss what they learn and what should be taught to them.

It will be better if you use examples from your own life that are connected to your experiences. For example:

  • For instance, a weekly Times Magazine reports that over 60% of kids act violently when they witness their parents acting angrily.
  • To provide an example, almost 40% of youngsters learn to use drugs and alcohol by seeing their parents.
  • For example, the new normal of functioning from home has increased the use of smart devices, which has increased children's screen time.

IELTS writing task 2 topics:

Some people believe that allowing children to make their own choices on everyday matters(such as food, clothes, and entertainment) is likely to result in a society of individuals who only think about their own wishes. Other people believe that it is important for children to make decisions about matters that affect them. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion

Examine the question carefully to determine the kind of essay that is required before you begin writing.

You must decide which category your IELTS writing problem 2 subjects belong to during your IELTS writing task. You must examine the instruction words to achieve it. The instructions in this instance are "Give your own opinion" and "Discuss both these views." So after examining these two points of view: the essay falls within the discussion essay type and the phrase "Give your own opinion" suggests that you must express your personal opinions on the subject, which qualifies it as an opinion essay. As a result, we can state that the essay falls under the of "Discussion and Opinion" based essays.

Don't worry, we have prepared three examples with responses consisting of bands 6, 7, and 9. Take a look at that and the structure of the essay.

  • Introduction:  Rephrase the question in the introduction. Explain that you will talk about both arguments. Give your opinion since it has been asked.
  • Boy Paragraph 1:Describe the argument you are discussing. Give instances to back up your claims.
  • Body Paragraph 2: Mention the other point of view. Give instances to back up your claim.
  • Conclusion: Restate the question in your own words and convey your thoughts.

Band 6

While many believe that parents should let their children make daily decisions, others worry that this could lead to the development of self-serving adults. In my opinion, we should give the children the freedom to decide.

On the one hand, kids raised by harsh parents typically have shy social skills. When they were kids, they had to abide by all of their parents' restrictions, no matter what they wanted to do. Their parents would prefer that they become engineers or doctors. They become timid since they are unable to follow their interests. As a result, it's critical to provide children the freedom to choose their paths or make judgments from a young age.

However, children who has very open upbringings with their parents often lacks empathy for other people. This happens as a result of their parents giving them what they wanted without requiring them to think about whether it was right or wrong. It is not their fault, it is their parents' responsibility. Whether if they are being rational, elders should teach children that real life doesn't always follow a pattern. It is also essential to control some of their initial emotions as a result.

In conclusion, I believe that children should be left to make some basic life decisions. Making the wrong decisions in these areas will permanently damage the child's future.

Take on this essay: Bold highlights indicate potential cohesive devices or connecting words that were not appropriate. Word repetition and poor word choice and construction are indicated by italics and underlined highlights. Grammatical errors and missing articles are indicated by words in italics. Note that the word count is less than 250 words and the essay lacks a proper conclusion.

Band 7

Some argue that allowing children make decisions about things like food, clothing, and entertainment increases the likelihood that they will grow up to be self-centered, while others believe that letting kids make decisions that directly affect them is vital. This essay will discuss both points of view, and I concur that giving kids the freedom to make their own decisions at an early age is essential.

People believe giving kids liberties and allowing them to select whatever they want helps them believe they can do anything they desire. It hurts the child’s mental development, and those kids will probably grow up to be egocentric adults. For example, if rich parents constantly grant their wishes to their young children, the result can often be arrogance later in life. For this reason, parents should guide their kids in making significant decisions and discourage them from acting in ways that could be detrimental to their development, others' development, or both.

In my opinion, kids who lack the flexibility to choose what they want and are unable to make their own decisions end up being less creative than those who have this freedom.  To help their kids develop confidence, parents should allow them to make certain decisions. For example, if a kid wants to take their football career ahead as his main aim in life, parents should not discourage him by saying that his decision is aimless and not fruitful for his future. Deciding by themselves can develop independence and self-confidence as they follow their interests and hobbies.

In the final analysis, we should give our kids freedom, but there should be a line drawn between that liberty and selfishness because our society needs more imaginative and selfless individuals. The best possible results can be achieved through balance.

Take on this essay: Bold highlights denote potential cohesive devices or connecting words that were not appropriate. Italicized words denote incorrect word choice, word construction, and word repetition. Grammar errors and missing articles are indicated in italics with highlighted highlights. Note that this essay has a better flow than the last one with suitable examples.

Band 9

Some argue that granting children freedom of choice would better prepare them to deal with the repercussions of their actions in the future, while others worry that giving them extensive freedom may put them in jeopardy. This essay will address both viewpoints, and I agree that it's crucial to give children the autonomy to make their own judgments at a young age.

To begin with, giving children the ability to make everyday decisions sends the message that youngsters are entitled to make any decision they desire. They frequently become more self-centered as a result of not taking into account the implications of their choices. Furthermore, when given the freedom to make decisions on ordinary matters, folks begin to consider what would benefit them first rather than how it could affect others. For example, when wealthy parents consistently fulfill their desires for their young children, the result often leads to narcissism later on in life.

Conversely, those who give kids the autonomy to make major routine choices contend that doing so fosters a sense of independence and self-reliance. Children acquire a sense of control over their activities and learn to accept responsibility for their choices when they are given the liberty to make age-appropriate decisions. For instance, providing youngsters the freedom to choose the ideal extracurricular activity or hobbies can help them develop a sense of self-worth as they embrace their passions and pursuits. This also pertains to the things they choose to eat, wear, play with, and read. Additionally, this kind of activity strengthens their knack for logical thought. Children learn to solve problems and make intelligent choices when they contemplate the outcome of their decisions.

In conclusion, letting teenagers make their own decisions may cause a variety of unanticipated challenges. However, if parents take the initiative to teach their kids about the differences between right and wrong in reality, that strategy may prove effective. For this reason, I support giving adolescents the freedom to decide for themselves on ordinary choices.

Take on this essay: This essay is well-written and organized in terms of flow, fluency, grammar, large vocabulary, connecting words, and sentence structure.
