Why pursue the GRE test?

What is the GRE exam?
The Graduate REcord Examination (GRE) is a standardized test which is designed to measure students’ readiness for graduate-level work.
There are two main types of GRE exams:
- GRE General Test
- GRE Subject Tes
These exams are specially designed for students who are aiming to pursue their graduate, business, or law programs. For over 70 years, GRE scores have been crucial for admissions and fellowship committees at thousands of graduate programs globally which helps students’ undergraduate performance and other qualifications for advanced study.
GRE General Test:
The GRE General test measures students’ skills in Verbal REasoning, Quantitative REasoning, and Analytical Writing.
Recently on September 22, 2023, some changes have been made which are important to take into consideration.
Here are the key changes:
- The total duration has been halved from nearly 4 hours to just under 2 hours.
- There are no changes in the sections but each section is now shorter.
- The unscored and scheduled breaks have been removed from the test.
- Compared to the previous 10-15 calendar days of getting the scores, official GRE scores will now be delivered more quickly within 8-10 calendar days.
Test Structure:
Analytical Writing: 1 Essay - 30 Minutes
Verbal Reasoning Section 1: 12 Questions - 18 Minutes
Verbal Reasoning Section 2: 15 Questions - 23 Minutes
Quantitative Reasoning Section 1: 12 Questions - 21 Minutes
Quantitative Reasoning Section 2: 15 Questions - 26 Minutes
Total Time:
1 Hour, 58 Minutes
Score Range:
Verbal Reasoning: 130-170 (1- point increments)
Quantitative Reasoning: 130-170 (1- point increments)
Analytical Writing: 0-6 (half- point increments)
Test Administration:
The GRE General Test is available year-round at prometric test centers and at home. It is primarily administered on computers. Additionally, it may be offered on specific dates at alternative testing locations outside the prometric network.
For the at-home option, students can use their own computer in a secure setting, where the computer must undergo a system check and be scanned for any software that could provide an unfair advantage. The at-home test is monitored by a human proctor.
GRE Subject Tests:
Unlike the GRE General Test, GRE Subject Tests are specially designed to assess knowledge of students in specific subject areas. It is intended for those with an undergraduate major or extensive background in those specific subject fields.
The tests are available in the following disciplines:
- Mathematics
- Physics
- Psychology
Important Dates:
Starting in September 2023, the GRE Subject Tests will be administered on computers globally on the following dates. In most locations, an at-home testing option will also be available:
- September 16, 2024, to September 29, 2024
- October 17, 2024, to October 30, 2024
- April 21, 2025, to May 4, 2025
- The testing time for the Mathematics test is 2 hours and 50 minutes
- The Physics and Psychology tests each have a duration of 2 hours
NOTE: The Chemistry test is discontinued after the April 2023 administration.
Validity of Scores:
GRE scores are valid for FIVE YEARS following the test date.
Fees:
- GRE General Test: 22,500 RS.
- GRE Subject Test: 14,500 RS.
Rescheduling, changing test centres, and score reporting can incur additional costs.
Registration:
You must register online through ETS Account to take the General Test or Subject Test at a test center or at home.
- Create an ETS Account: To create an account, go to www.ets.org/mygre.
- Choose Test Date: Register at least two calendar days before the preferred test date, yet it is advisable to register 3-4 months before the intended test date to secure the preferred slot.
- Make Payment: Complete the payment process.
NOTE: the spelling of the first and last name should exactly match the name printed on the ID documents which will be presented on the day of the test. If it does not match, students may be prohibited from taking the test, oy the test scores may be canceled after taking the test.
Eligibility:
There is no specific age limit for the GRE test.
Educational Background:
There is no strict eligibility criteria regarding educational background, however, the test is typically taken by students who have completed an undergraduate degree.
ID Requirements:
A valid government-issued Id is required for test registration and the same on the test day as well.
Attempt Limit:
Students can take the GRE General Test once every 21 days, up to five times within any continuous rolling 12-month period (365 days).
