In this post, we will be giving some tips and guidance on how to succeed in the Interactive Reading tasks.

What to expect in the Interactive Reading Section:

Total time: 7 or 8 minutes

Total questions: 6 (‘Highlight the answer’ comes twice)

Understanding the Interactive Reading Section

The purpose of the Interactive Reading section of the DET is to evaluate how well one understands and interprets written texts. Contrary to the usual reading comprehension exercises, the interactive aspect of this section calls for different levels of engagement with the text such as choosing the right answer, stuffing in the correct word or words in specified areas and so on.

One should prepare oneself with these kinds of questions for better performance in the examination.

Here, we are going to explain five different types of questions you will find in the Interactive Reading section of the DET Exam.

1) Complete the Sentence

In this task you will see a paragraph which contains 5-6 blank spaces. It will request you “Select the best options for each missing word”. All you are required to do is to choose the right word out of the options given to make the complete sentence and accords with the meaning of the entire passage.

Tips:

  • Context Clues: Prior to making a choice, ensure that the entire sentence has been read in order to comprehend the situation first.
  • Grammar Check: Check if the selected word or expression is used correctly in the sentence.
  • Logical Fit: Take into account the meaning of the whole sentence and ensure that your selection is appropriate.

2) Complete the Passage

This task consists of filling in one blank in two passages. It will request you “Select the best sentence to fill in the blank”. Two parts of a passage are presented and one sentence is dropped in between. You will have to choose a sentence from the given options to fill in the gap and make the passage complete and sensical.

Tips:

Familiarization Strategy: Go through the whole passage quickly again to have an idea of what is contained in it.

Discourse Completion: Verify that the inserted sentence is both contextually and grammatically appropriate with respect to the given passage.

Cohesiveness: Confirm that the finished passage does not only make logical sense but also connects in a sequential and coherent manner.

3) Highlight the Answer

In this activity, you will read a passage and then underline relevant words or phrases that respond to a certain question. This question type occurs two times in the Interactive Reading part.

Tips:

Comprehensive Reading: Read the audio script in detail and determine what information is relevant.

Word for Word: Indicate that the borderline between the text and the answer is blurred and point to the text that contains the answer.

Try Not To Over Highlight: Highlight only that part of the text which answers the question, without revealing any extra words.

4) Identify the Idea

This task requires you to identify the main idea or a specific idea within a passage. You will choose from a list of options that best represents the idea presented in the text.

Tips:

Key Point Concentration: Focus on the central theme or main idea of the passage.

Evidence: Provide evidence from the text to support the main idea.

Get Rid of Irrelevant Options: Remove any choices which include distracting or trivial information.

5)Title the Passage

In this task, you will read a passage and then select the most appropriate title from a list of options. The title should accurately reflect the main topic or theme of the passage.

Tips:

  • Grasping the Theme: Recognize the main idea or central thought of the text.
  • Brief Resumé: Search for a title that accurately expresses the main ideas of the passage in a few words.
  • Do Not Use Wrong Titles: Remove titles which are over-tempting, too short, or irrelevant to the content of the essay.

Time Management

The Interactive Reading part has a total of six questions, which includes the “Highlight the Answer” questions that are repeated twice. You will be given around 7 to 8 minutes to finish this part.

Time Ethics:

Do Introduce Time Constraints: This means that one should sit down and particularly allocate time to each and every question and still find time to go through the possible answers.

Understand The Importance Of Clarity In Communication: Answer the questions only when you have thoroughly read and comprehend all the passages.

Act swiftly: In the case of question patterns that one is already familiar with, it is important to make correct and quick decisions in order to devote more time to difficult question patterns.

Tips and Strategies for Interactive Reading

The first thing that you should remember is the passage will be answered without the questions at hand. This will enable the reader to understand the content of the texts well. The next step would be to look for the words and phrases associated with the queries. The said technique is beneficial in finding the exact information that one is in need of more efficiently in a shorter span of time.

Context can be important for understanding the meanings of individual words and especially phrases. One’s understanding of a certain sentence may help hinder the meaning of a strange word thereby helping in understanding the text.

Such an approach is helpful in finding the focus quickly and at the same time increasing the chances of remembering the information.

Ability to know and understand grammar, especially the most complex sentences can help one with answering the right options. Go through the most important grammar lessons and apply them in reading comprehension passages.
