Welcome, Dear Students!

Thank you for reaching our all-inclusive guide on how to conquer all the activities available in the Duolingo English Test (DET) Interactive Listening section.

This part is very important as it aims at gauging how well you can understand what others are saying, and if you are good at it, chances are that you will greatly improve your overall score in the DET test.

In this blog, we will focus on the tips and techniques on how to do best in the Interactive Listening part of the DET exam in 2025.

About the Interactive Listening Section

Total Time: 04 minutes

Summarize the Conversation: 75 Seconds

Frequency: 02 times

Sub Score: Comprehension and Conversation

The interactive listening section is offered twice in the DET test and it is a contributing factor in the subscores of comprehension and conversation skills. Also referred to as the ‘listen and respond’ section, this part of the exam provides you with a scenario prompt written in the first person which you need to act as if you are in that situation.

Example Prompt: "You are finding difficulties in the subject of economics and need to finish an assignment on it. You decide to go to your professor to solve your doubts."

  • As per the prompt, a student and a professor engage in a full conversation, depicting each dialogue in turns.

  • The students have to figure out which dialogue will be next in the order of presentation and have feedback given immediately.

  • The total time spent on the dialogue is four minutes.

  • Upon the conclusion of the dialogue, students must compose written accounts of conversations lasting not more than 75 seconds.

  • Illustrating this further is a sample question with answers as found in the understanding of this question's format better.

Sample Interactive Listening Question

(AUDIO) Student: “Hello, Professor. I’m thinking about taking English studies as a major but I’m not sure if that is the best choice for me. Can you help me with that, please?”

Question 1: What invocation should the professor make?

Options:

A. "I wonder why you care about English order."

B. "Of course. It’s a big decision, and I’m glad you came to me for advice. Why do you want to major in English?"

C. "Are you cool with taking up English?"

D. “It’s you who should make the decision. I can’t help you with that.”

Correct Answer: B. “Of course. It’s a big decision, and I’m glad you came to me for advice. Why do you want to major in English?”

(AUDIO) Student: “Because I have always liked reading and writing and they say it is interesting but I do not know about the jobs that go with it.”

Question 2: What should the professor say next?

Options:

A. "You should probably choose something else if you’re worried."

B. "That is understandable. English is a language that can be attributed to many careers, but only to certain ones. How do you see yourself? Teaching, writing, publishing, or something else entirely?""

C. "There is no employment in the field of English."

D. “What does this have to be done now? Think about it and come back later?”

Correct Answer: B. “That is understandable. English is a language that can be attributed to many careers, but only to certain ones. How do you see yourself? Teaching, writing, publishing, or something else entirely?”

(AUDIO) Student: “I don’t know; however, perhaps I would consider teaching as an alternative career. Is that the natural course for English majors?”

Question 3: Now what do you think a professor will utter?

Options:

A. “In fact, it is uncommon for English major students to become teachers.”

B. “Many people who major in English go on to do teaching, but it is not just that. Some go on to do journalism, content editing and even public relations. Have you considered any of those fields?”

C. “On no, English students should just forget about teaching.”

D. “If the intention is to teach, look for a different course.”

Correct Answer: B. “Yes, many English majors go into teaching, but it’s not the only option. Some also work in journalism, content writing, or even public relations. Have you thought about any of those fields?”

(AUDIO) Student: “That could be interesting. I also think I would love to do content writing.”

Question 4: What do you expect the professor will say next?

Options:

A. “As much as cake is a good idea, content writing is very cut-throat and so one needs to be cautious.”

B. “That is a good option. One can undertake English and equip oneself with content writing skills. Some also work in journalism, content writing, or even public relations. Have you thought about any of those fields?”

C. “Content writing should be avoided as a main area of concern.”

D. “Take a little time and why don’t you also think about choosing a science subject?”

Correct Answer: B. “That is a good option. One can undertake English and equip oneself with content writing skills. Some also work in journalism, content writing, or even public relations. Have you thought about any of those fields?”

(AUDIO) Student: “Yes, I do feel that my confidence has ramped up a notch, nevertheless, do you think there are any more courses that I could do in order to make it better?”

Question 5. What do you think the professor will say next?

Options:

A. This would be quite enough. Taking an English course is fine.

B. Sure, more studies like, for example, creative writing, or media studies, come in handy.

C. Courses are not needed, only English is important.

D. In my opinion, I do not advise you to take any other courses.

Correct Answer: B. Sure, more studies like, for example, creative writing, or media studies, come in handy.

Correct answer: B. Sure, more studies like, for example, creative writing, or media studies, come in handy.

Summary:

I voiced my apprehensions regarding the decision of making English my first major to my professor and got great advice. He questioned what my first feelings and inclinations were regarding the study of English. I told him that I loved literature and writing, but expressed concern over career options in the field. He kindly stated that I don’t have to just teach, as there are other options like journalism, content writing and public relations. I mentioned that I liked content writing and asked him what else I should take in order to better my ability. He suggested that I can take basic creative writing and media studies classes.

Tips and Strategies for Interactive Listening

1. Comprehend the Prompt First

It’s time for you to take an understanding of the inner workings of the prompt. Get in the middle of the action to understand how the interactions come in sequence. For instance, place yourself in the center of the scenario that has been provided. This makes it easy for one to understand the subject matter and how to forecast the conversation with precision.

2. Identify Focus Areas

Concentrate on the key themes and particulars articulated in the session. That will enable you to formulate the right answers. Pay attention to most of the time the speakers’ dialogs hold the key to the core issues and the choice of responses to the audience.

3. Forward Suggestions

Try to guess what the next dialogue will be from the participants based on the flow of conversation. This will assist in the quick choice of the right answer. Consider the context of the discussion and the sequence of ideas presented, and try to predict what comes next. This strategy not only helps in responding correctly but also keeps you interested.

4. Conduct Active Listening

This implies that there is no passive mode of listening in conversations simply because they will be just mind notes. Such will ensure increasing comprehension. Active listening means deciphering important elements of the dialogue and this will help in retaining and recapitulating the discussion properly.

5. Sharpen Memory Skills

Take into consideration that in the DET exam notes cannot be taken therefore the conclusion drawn should fit the whole conversation from within with no writing aids applied. Thus in preparing for the next task one should try to keep the whole conversation in memory. If the 4 minutes given for the conversation have some time left, don’t press the next button at once as the instructor advises. Instead, read all of that conversation once more and attempt to recall all of that and fill various details in the narrative. This will allow one to recollect details even more better.

6. Enrich Your Word Power

A wide range of vocabulary is essential to understand and react to a variety of situations you may be faced with. The constant addition of new words and phrases to one's arsenal of mental equipment can only enhance one’s understanding of the language and also help them to communicate more effectively.

7. Analyze and Think

In the course of Duolingo training, take some time to appraise your efforts and establish what needs remedial action. Be conscious of the mistakes you make and address them. In every practice, there is a tendency to make mistakes and after every practice, mistakes should be analyzed as to the reasons for the commitment of those mistakes. This mechanism will assist in preventing the repetition of errors of that nature in the future.

8. Breathe Easy

It is advisable that to understand the full meaning, all the conversations should be listened to keenly. Remaining composed will be of great help to you. Stress may also affect your ability to listen and comprehend. To avoid straining yourself during the test, learn relaxation techniques.

9. State the Heart of the Matter

Also, first-person writing is a must because you have to pretend that you were in the situation. Use sentences such as “I asked my friend,” for instance, or “I went to my professor to clear my question.” That will help you make that summary more orderly and easier to follow.

10. Equalize the Efforts Across the Timelines

It is of utmost importance to register that for the conversation, only 4 minutes will be allocated therefore use it judiciously. As it has been stated previously, do not leave any sentence half-done and make sure every second is not wasted. Clock-watch if you have to, but please do not hurry through the talk, make sure you have a good combination of swiftness and precision.

11. Typing Practice

For the summary section, typing speed will play a crucial role as you will have only 75 seconds. There are sometimes instances where students are unable to finish the writing although they know what to write, due to slow writing speed. For this reason, the importance of learning how to type fast and accurately cannot be overemphasized. Arrange a schedule for typing practice to be able to increase both speed and accuracy of typing over time.

12. Proofread

Allow yourself  a few seconds to go through and write any correction. I mean proofreading helps to avoid any mistakes or vagueness for the sake of the overall score. Make sure the summary is well organized, straight to the point and has no errors in it.

13. Master Indirect Speech.

Understanding the grammar section called indirect speech would be quite useful in the summary part especially. In speech, as much as one would recount the whole scene, indirect speech has to be used. For instance, to rephrase the professor’s quote you would not say: ‘A professor told me: ‘You must grasp the concept of supply and demand.’’ You would instead elaborate Hence, a professor stated that one should comprehend supply and demand. This grammar component coming together will enhance the quality of your summaries and make them look more orderly and professional.

Conclusion

The Interactive Listening portion of the Duolingo English Test can be mastered by utilizing practice, attentiveness, and purposeful preparation.

After comprehension of the structure and importance of practicing active listening and skill, one’s performance in this section can be enhanced.

Do not forget, success comes with practice and a cool head.
