You need to be well prepared to face any question that is tossed at you during your IELTS speaking test and the only way to achieve that is through continuous IELTS test practice. For example, if one of your speaking topics is “Describe something that you did with someone/ a group of people” you need to describe something you did with a group of people or describe something that you did with someone. Let's have a look at the variations of answers on the above speaking questions..
IELTS speaking questions 1 : Describe something that you did with someone/ a group of people
In the first variation of this topic, you can describe something you did with a group of people
What was the task :
I have been an ardent member of a disaster relief group in my locality. We are a group of seven people among which two are female and four are male. One afternoon I heard about a fire in the local slums due to a short circuit. I relayed the news over our whatsapp group and we instantly decided to meet and plan to help the people who lost their homes in the fire.
How you executed it :
Within an hour we gathered in front of the slum which was completely ruined due to the fire. There were a total eight families in there and a total of eighteen members among which six were children and five were aged people. Some of the people were crying, some were cursing their bad fortune and some of them were dying of hunger and thirst. We understood that we had to get to work fast. I told three of the members to go to each and every house in the locality and ask for any item they could donate like food, clothes, utensils or money. Two other members went to the ruins along with the firefighters to procure any item which was not ruined or partially ruined. I along with another member went to the nearby hotel to get food and water for everyone. We also bought raw materials like rice, pulses, sugar, salt, vegetables and fruits so that the people could survive for the next few days without worry. While I distributed the food and other edibles to the people, I could see their dismay vanish. We could be the small ray of hope to them for a brief moment, and that was the reward of our efforts.
The ending :
The local people also donated some clothes and money which we distributed among the affected. An older woman hugged me and thanked me for our efforts and smiled at the others, which warmed our hearts. The thought that some small efforts could change the whole life of another person in trouble drives us to do this work every time we get an opportunity. The smiling faces of the people is our reward and our badge of honor which drives us.
IELTS speaking questions : Describe something that you did with someone/ a group of people
In the second variation of this topic, you can describe something that you did with someone
Paint a picture :
Firstly I would like to thank you for giving me the opportunity to speak on such a fascinating topic. I would like to narrate a story of a day spent with a stranger I met at the movie hall a few years back. I went to the movies alone that day since none of my friends were free. Coincidentally, I sat beside a lady who also happened to come to the movie alone.
Dig deeper into it :
As the movie progressed, I felt a weird connection with this lady. We both seemed to laugh at the same jokes, we welled up at the same scenes and we cheered together for the protagonist in a similar manner. During the interval, the lady, who also caught the vibe, looked at me and asked whether I had come alone on purpose, to which I told her about the friends who ditched me. We instantly started chatting about the movie and our interests and even shared our snacks. By the time the movie ended we were sitting next to each other like best friends and smiling at the happy ending of the movie. We left the theater together and I offered to buy her coffee to which she gladly agreed. We shared our views on the movie and also discussed our common interests. We exchanged numbers and promised to call one another if we ever needed company to the movies.
Concluding thoughts :
The day ended on a very happy note and I was so happy and astonished to have found a new friend in the most unexpected situation. I am still in contact with the person and we often go to movies together whenever we have no one else to accompany each other. She is definitely the kindest person I have met at a movie theater and I am glad to have found her.

IELTS speaking part 2 - Follow up question 1
Do you prefer to do group activities or are you comfortable with less people around?
Answer : I am a person who can adapt well with situations. If I am in a group, I tend to enjoy the company of every individual who is present there. I try to understand the point of view of different people without being judgmental or snarky. If I find myself in an intimate group of three or two, I tend to be more open and try to make the other people comfortable. I believe that the number of people doesn't form a group, it's their thoughts and ideologies that bring them closer.
What do you take away from the unexpected encounter? (based on IELTS speaking questions 2)
Answer : From the unexpected encounter I had at the theater, I took back a few learnings. I learnt that there are no boundaries when it comes to friendship. We should always be open to make new friends and new memories. I shouldn’t hesitate to break the ice and start a conversation with anyone if I feel a connection. I also understood the importance of breaking out of my comfort zone and saying yes to new experiences.
What is the force that drives you to help other people? (Based on IELTS speaking questions 1)
Answer : When I initially joined the disaster relief group, I didn’t know what to expect. It took me several months to understand the proper way of handling a crisis. Witnessing people in despair, dying with hunger, suffering from injury or even death, can bring a lot of negativity to your mind. But I soon understood the purpose of this group, it was to “help the helpless”. After being in this group for several years, I have understood one important fact: help is always welcomed by the people, no matter how small it is. Providing water to a person on the street can earn you a few moments of satisfaction and a lot of prayers. The hope in the eyes of the people and their blessings is our real reward. That is the only force that drives me and my group to reach out to the deprived and unfortunate.
