To ease your IELTS preparation a little, we have prepared the answer to a frequently asked IELTS speaking test sample question which is “Describe a picture /photograph of you that you like”. This blog will help you with your IELTS speaking practice test and give you an idea of how to approach the speaking questions strategically. The speaking topics can vary in genre, ideology, and approach. You need to be well prepared to face any question that is tossed at you during your IELTS speaking test and the only way to achieve that is through continuous IELTS test practice. If your topic in hand is to describe a picture /photograph of you that you like you need to describe the photography of the picture, give a vivid description of your favorite pic, mention the reason why it appeals to you and conclude with your ending thoughts on your favorite pic.

IELTS exam sample 1: Describe a picture /photograph of you that you like

Describe photography :

My favorite photo is the photo that I have kept on my phone’s wallpaper for the past 3 years. It is a picture taken at my sister’s wedding. The picture is very close to my heart as it captured the emotions I felt at that moment very well. The picture was taken at the exact moment I saw my sister in her wedding attire fully dolled up as a bride, for the very first time.

Why is it your favorite pic :

My sisters and I have shared a very special bond from childhood and we have been inseparable. From waking up beside her in the morning to going to bed with her at night while chatting about the events of the day, we have been with each other through thick and thin. So when I saw my sister in her wedding look for the first time, it suddenly hit me with the realization that from the next day, I would not be waking up next to her anymore. Tears started rolling down my cheeks, as I gazed at her with bewildered eyes. She reached out her hand towards me as though she instantly understood everything that was going on in my mind. The photographer has captured this exact moment with utter beauty and hence this picture will remain forever special to me.

Concluding thoughts :

Since I was very busy during my sister’s wedding, I hardly have any great pictures of that day. But this picture, though not planned, captured our emotional bond so well that every time I look at this picture my heart skips a beat. This is the reason why it is my favorite photo of all time.

IELTS exam sample 2: Describe a picture /photograph of you that you like

Describe photography :

A photograph is a keeper of a beautiful moment and it brings back the memories of the moment when it was captured. Every time we look at a picture, we recall the exact situation at which the image was taken and that is the whole essence of a great photograph. Thus my favorite picture is a family portrait we took at a restaurant while we were celebrating my father’s retirement.

Describe your favorite pic :

The picture was taken by the manager of the restaurant we went to celebrate the occasion. My father, who is usually a very camera-shy person, didn’t object when we urged him to take a family picture to remember the moment. In this picture all four of us, my sister, myself, and our parents can be seen smiling from ear to ear, closely holding each other. My father’s face has a mild smile and his eyes are exuding the satisfaction of a great professional journey. My mother is looking at my father and smiling back at him as if she was assuring him to lend her support to him in the next phase of his life as well. My sister and I hugged our father like we used to do as a child, gesturing that no matter how old we got, we would always embrace him like that. This picture captured the moment so beautifully that we have framed it in our living room.

Emotional Conclusion :

This picture is a source of inspiration to me and my sister. It represents the bond of our family and also reminds us of the hard work my father had to endure during his long professional career. He retired at the age of 65 and worked with the same vigor till the very end of his career and that is a huge learning for both me and my sister. That is why this picture is my favorite photo and holds a special place in my heart.

IELTS test next step: Follow up questions

The IELTS cue card part is not the end of the IELTS speaking topics and questions. The next part of this English speaking test is the follow-up questions. Based on your response in the speaking topics area, you will be asked a few follow-up questions in this portion. You should practice for the follow-up question segment of your IELTS test, which is also known as IELTS speaking part 2. You have to work on your speaking questions as well as the IELTS speaking part 2 segment, which is included in the IELTS speaking test sample in the IELTS material.

Here are some of the follow-up questions on the IELTS speaking topics with answers. The topic in hand is “Describe a picture /photograph of you that you like”

IELTS speaking part 3- Follow up question 1

What is the meaning of a great picture to you?

Answer 1: In my opinion, a great picture should bring back fond memories of the exact moment when it was captured. The point of a photograph is to lock the essence of a moment so that it can be cherished for the rest of our lives. Photographs speak a thousand stories and have a bundle of emotions in them. Only those people who were present at the exact moment know the true value of the photograph hence its essence is truly recognized by them. As the phrase says, “Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder”, the true beauty of a picture lies in the memories of the onlooker.

Answer 2: The meaning of a great picture varies from person to person. To me, the emotions of the moment during which the picture was clicked, make a photograph special. But to another person, a great picture might be an image with great quality and resolution or proficiency with which the image was captured. To a professional photographer, a great picture might be the one with maximum expertise. Hence the essence of a great picture is entirely dependent on the perspective of the onlooker.

Do you often look at old pictures? How does that make you feel?

Answer 1: I make sure to often look at the pictures in my phone gallery and make sure to save the images I love the most in a separate folder. Looking at old pictures brings back a lot of memories and waves of emotions. Like when I look back at the picture of my school picnic days, I recall the simplicity of our lives at school with my friends. I am left awestruck at the level of changes we have all gone through in the past few years. When I look at the photos of my family vacations, my urge to plan another vacation intensifies, and more often than not, I start planning another vacation. Like that, different images bring back different memories, and looking at them brings different reactions.

Have you ever felt bad after looking at a photograph?

Answer 1: Yes, I have felt bad after looking at photographs on many occasions. When I look at the photograph of my late grandfather, I become very emotional as I share a very special bond with him. When I look at the photograph of the school trip I missed due to a fever, I am saddened by the thought of missing an important event of my school days. When I look back at the images of my sister’s wedding, I feel a void in my heart and a lump in my throat. Just like that, different images bring in different moments of sadness when I see them.

Answer 2: Yes, I certainly have. A photograph can depict a wide range of emotions like sorrow, joy, anger, or jealousy. An image can often be misinterpreted and thus it can become a source of anger rather than joy. The memories attached to a photograph can bring a smile to your face of sadness in your heart. The feeling you sense after seeing an image is entirely dependent on the moment and the story behind the photograph.
