Describe an indoor or outdoor place where it is easy for you to study: IELTS Cue Card

One of the crucial sections of the IELTS test is the speaking test which is conducted to determine your communication and fluency. The IELTS speaking test has three major components including a generic interview round, the cue card section, and the follow-up questions.

In the generic interview round, you will be asked generic questions about yourself, your background, and your studies. This segment is to make you comfortable with the IELTS speaking test scenario.

Next will be the cue card segment, where you will be given a topic based on which you have to frame the answer for it and give a monologue in 2 minutes. The examiner will give you a pencil and a paper and you will get 1 minute to prepare and frame the flow of your answer. You need to utilize this 1 minute to the fullest and draft the answer in your mind. It is better to divide your answer into smaller sections and draft the key points that you want to speak about during the speaking test. You can jot down the different sections in the paper during the 1 minute that you get and write down the keywords in each of these sections to better frame the answer.

The third section in the speaking test will be a follow-up question round based on your answer in the cue card section. In this section, the examiner will ask you a set of follow-up questions to gauge your communication and impromptu response. You are expected to be quick, fluent, and good with your communication skills.

Focusing on the speaking test during your IELTS exam preparation is extremely important. You need to have a proper strategy to frame your answer for the cue card round. The more you practice the IELTS speaking questions and IELTS sample test, the more you will become confident. We recommend you go through several IELTS speaking topics so that you are confident and fluent with your answers. You will definitely have a higher score with more practice with various IELTS speaking topics.

To take your IELTS exam preparation a notch higher, here is a detailed sample of a topic for the cue card round of your IELTS speaking test followed by the follow-up questions.

The IELTS practice test example:

Describe an indoor or outdoor place where it is easy for you to study.

To better manage the question of your cue card during the speaking test, divide your answers into smaller sections so that you have a crisp idea of how to proceed with framing the answer. For the topic "Describe an indoor or outdoor place where it is easy for you to study," you can follow the below sections for a better flow of your answer for the IELTS speaking test.

Introduction: Introduce the place, the vibe, and the location.

When do you like to study in this place: Give the time of the day when you would want to study in this place and describe the vibe of the place during this time.

Why do you like to study in this place: Jot down all the reasons that make you like this place including the reason why you feel studying here makes it easier for you.

Who do you like to study with in this place: If you study with someone else, mention who they are and how you study together. If you are studying alone, specify how you continue with your studies here.

Conclusion: Briefly conclude why this place is your favorite during the studying session.

Now that you know how to frame the answers, here are the samples for you for the IELTS speaking test.

IELTS speaking questions sample 1:

Describe an indoor or outdoor place where it is easy for you to study.

Introduction:

The balcony in my room is in general one of my favorite spots in the house and is one of the most comforting places for me to study. There is a small chair and a swing and I prefer switching my seats between those while I study.

When do you like to study in this place:

I like to study here during the early hours of the morning. I wake up before sunrise on most days and sit on my balcony with my study materials and as the sun rises and the daylight peeks in, I continue with my studies enjoying the best time of the day.

Why do you like to study in this place:

The view from my balcony overlooks the sky and especially in the morning the yellow hues of the sunrise make me feel calm. The light breeze and the faint chirping of the birds are almost equivalent to meditation and help me concentrate.

Who do you like to study with in this place:

Usually, I study alone here. However, during my IELTS exam preparation, especially while practicing for the IELTS speaking test, my friend or cousin used to sit with me and give me IELTS speaking topics to give my monologue.

Conclusion:

This indoor place is very close to my heart and I have the fondest memories here including hectic study hours which were always made easy by the unparalleled calm that the place radiates.

IELTS speaking questions sample 2:

Describe an indoor or outdoor place where it is easy for you to study.

Introduction:

One of my favorite places to study is the lawn area in my building. The place has a lovely vibe and fills my mind with positivity every time I visit there.

When do you like to study in this place:

Generally, I go to the lawn of my building during the evening with my phone or tablet and listen to the video lectures on YouTube with my headphones. During my IELTS exam preparation, I often listened to sample IELTS speaking topics for the speaking test as I walked through the lawn or sat on one of the benches.

Why do you like to study in this place:

This place radiates lots of positivity. There are elderly people walking, even if it is hard or tiring for them just to keep themselves fit. My mind fills with motivation and positivity seeing them. The children of our building play around and the place is always filled with joy and laughter that gives me the positive energy to go on with my studies.

Who do you like to study with in this place:

Most of the time my friends from my building join me during my study sessions. We carry on with our individual studies if we are studying different subjects. Sometimes other friends who are also doing their IELTS preparation joined me. We gave each other IELTS speaking topics and helped each other improve ourselves for the IELTS test.

Conclusion:

The lawn is a very special place for me in general and I believe studying becomes fruitful when we are at peace and have a positive mindset. Since this place is the epitome of positivity for me, it has become one of my favorite places to study.

IELTS speaking test next step - Follow-up questions

The next part of the IELTS speaking examination is the follow-up questions part where the examiner will ask you a few questions from your monologue of the cue card section. This section is the toughest section in the speaking test because it requires spontaneous answers and is devised to determine your communication skills and active thinking. Below are a few samples of the follow-up questions which will help you with the IELTS exam preparation:

IELTS speaking test: Follow-up Questions:

Do you think a quiet place is necessary for studying?

Answer: Right from childhood, when I used to complain about noises coming from the neighborhood construction site during my study time, my mother taught me that not every child in this world is lucky to have a separate room for themselves and have to accommodate in houses where other family members are present and the environment might not be ideal or silent. That lesson stuck with me and I got habituated to dealing with the noise while studying, so personally for me, a quiet place is not necessary for studying. In fact now, sometimes I play music in the background while I study.

According to you, what is more fruitful: studying by yourself or having company?

Answer: I think for me this depends on the situation. Sometimes I prefer to have the company of a friend, teacher, or someone from the family to help me. Otherwise, mostly I prefer studying alone. For example, during my IELTS preparation, I only sought company while practicing for the speaking test. That boosted my confidence in public speaking and was almost an IELTS practice test.

Do you prefer to study during the day or night?

Answer: For me particularly, early morning studies work the best. I feel fresh and energetic when I wake up and find it easier to grasp the concepts and memorize the content of each topic during that time. Also, I believe sunrise is the most beautiful and soothing time of the day, so starting my day with the sunrise and concentrating on my studies during that time works best for me.
