The Writing, Reading, Listening, and Speaking tests are the four main components of the International English Language Testing System, or IELTS test as it is commonly called. Every test has a unique format, therefore it's important to comprehend it before attempting it. To do so, you need to follow a well-structured IELTS exam preparation program. It is not sufficient to simply skim the commonly asked IELTS speaking questions; you must also prepare for and practice answering the most requested IELTS exam sample topics and avail of a proper IELTS practice test.

In this blog, we will discuss the IELTS speaking topics and different strategies to approach them. This will help you to analyze each speaking topic, understand the hidden meanings of them, utilize the pointers mentioned on the cue card, and also articulate your thoughts in a productive manner. Your IELTS exam preparation for the speaking test should commence in the following manner :

  • Be ready with a basic introduction of yourself for the first section of the IELTS speaking exam.
  • During your IELTS preparation for the speaking test, quickly go over the various responses for the Cue Card topics. This aids in building momentum, comprehending the process of coming up with original solutions, and expanding your mental pool of ideas.
  • Deliver your monologue on the IELTS speaking topics in front of a mentor, who can provide insights on your shortcomings.
  • Practice answering the IELTS speaking questions and delivering your speech on IELTS speaking topics while being timed. That would help you to judge the speed of your speech delivery.
  • Avail for at least one IELTS sample test every day. It would give you a better idea about the pattern of IELTS speaking questions, your time management skills and your communication prowess.
  • Reading books and IELTS test materials might become too overwhelming sometimes, so you might want to watch video content for your IELTS speaking test preparation.

To better grasp the strategies for addressing the IELTS speaking test topic on a personal level, we will discuss one such IELTS exam sample question in this blog. You will have one minute to think through the response and two minutes to talk on the given subject. Your IELTS speaking test will come to an end when you respond to a few follow-up questions from the examiner following your two-minute speech of the IELTS speaking topics section.

IELTS speaking topics: How to strategize the response

To make it easier for you to come up with your own responses on well-known or obscure IELTS speaking topics, let's first chalk out a method to approach the issue in a systematic manner before digging into the IELTS exam sample questions and answers.

Read the topic and key pointers carefully

Your topic for the IELTS speaking section can be about any personal experience, about any creative idea or about any random product or event. Hence you need to be prepared for any type of topic assigned to you in the cue card section. For example, if your speaking test topic is “describe an important plant in your country”, your strategy to approach such IELTS speaking topics needs to be very simple like :

  • What is this tree / plant?
  • Which parts of the country can it be found?
  • What is the usefulness of this plant?
  • Your opinion

Be informative

For topics like this, your answer needs to be information driven. These types of IELTS speaking topics can be tricky because your answers might become too boring or too insufficient if not approached in the correct manner. Striking the correct balance while drafting the answers to these types of IELTS speaking questions, requires rigorous practice on several topics like this during your IELTS exam preparation.

Use examples

The cue card section of the IELTS exam aims to evaluate your hold on the English language and your competence in conveying your opinion in a simple and elegant manner. To do so, your soliloquy on these types of IELTS speaking topics needs to be filled with examples and facts or practical experiences, so that your answer and its main pointers are correctly understood by the IELTS test examiner.

To be specific, coconut trees are found mostly along the coasts of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Goa, West Bengal, Odisha, and Andaman and Nicobar Island.

What is the usefulness of this plant?

Coconut trees are one of the most important plants in the lives of Indians. Coconut farming and its products are the major source of income for millions of farmers in India. The most common product extracted from a Coconut tree is coconut, which gives us coconut water, coconut meat, coconut milk and coconut oil. Apart from them, several other products like husk, shells, leaves, trunk,s and even inflorescence are used to develop several useful items like fuel, coir, timber and furniture, sugar, and fodder. Every part of the coconut tree can be utilized for something or the other.

Your opinion :

Ever since childhood, coconut water has been one of my favorite beveraes. Whenever we plan on going to a coast for vacation, I look forward to sipping the sweet and salty water and gobbling up the tender meat of the coconut. The benefits of the coconut tree are immense and its export plays a significant role in India’s agricultural exports. India is one of the largest exporters of coconut, hence it not only has huge nutritious benefits but also a huge financial benefit for the economy of India.

IELTS exam sample 2:

Describe an important plant in your country

What is this tree?

The banana tree is one of the most valued trees in India for the wide variety of products obtained from its different parts and their utilities.  Hence the banana tree is a very precious tree in the lives of Indians.

Which parts of the country can it be found?

In order to thrive well, banana trees need a warm and humid climate and a well drained soil. This criterion is satisfied by almost all major cities of India, hence banana trees can be found in several major cities of India like Orissa, West Bengal, Maharashtra, Goa, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala, Bihar and Gujarat. Banana trees need adequate water during their cultivation phase, hence it is mostly found in those parts of India that have ample rainfall throughout the year. Almost every part of the banana tree has some utility or the other. Banana, the primary product obtained from the Banana tree is packed with nutrients, minerals, and dietary fibers. Your opinion :

I don’t think there is a single person in India who is indifferent to the existence of bananas. Every one of us, at some point in life, has consumed different parts of the banana tree. A fluffy piece of banana bread or a few pieces of banana chips bowls me over with their unique taste every time I try them. The nourishing properties of every part of the banana tree make it one of the most important and useful trees in India.

IELTS speaking questions  - Follow-up question

Mention a plan or tree apart from the one you mentioned earlier, which holds a special place in your life.

Answer: If I have to pick a tree that holds a very special place in my heart, it has to be the Mango tree. To me summer and mangoes are synonymous. There is something surreal about the pulp of this amazing fruit which awakens the child in me. During my visit to Jharkhand, I stayed at a friend’s place for a few days. Her father owns a huge farm where he grows different varieties of mango trees. One evening while the mangoes were being harvested, she took me to the farm and I witnessed the laborious task of plucking mangoes from the trees. She also showed me the different varieties of mango trees in the farm and explained the ways to identify each variety. After scanning so many varieties of mango trees and tasting their delicious fruits, mango trees have become even more dear to me.

What according to you are the benefits of trees or plants in the economy of a country like India?

Answer: Trees and their products have the potential to drive a major part of the economy of a country on its shoulders. Harvesting and cultivating plants like rice, wheat, cotton, and tea not only feeds the people of India but runs the household of millions of farmers of our country. The fruits obtained from trees like coconut, banana, mangoes, apples, and oranges, have huge demand overseas hence they form a major part of the exports of India which bring in a huge revenue. Also, India is one of the biggest exporters of tea and spices which are all obtained from plants harvested in India by our skilled farmers.

Do you think students should be taught about the importance of plants and ways of growing them?

Answer: Absolutely. Plants and trees are the most important parts of nature. They not only provide us with oxygen and manufacture food within them, but they also have several therapeutic properties. Growing plants can be the best hobby a person can inherit since it has only positive effects to deliver. While I was young, I learned to grow a plant from the seeds of chickpeas as a part of our biology class and that was my first interaction with plants and their properties. The beauty and benefits of plants should be imbibed within the minds of children at a young age hence it is necessary to include curriculums that enable them to grow and interact with plants and understand their importance.
