The IELTS speaking test, which evaluates a non-native English speaker's fluency, pronunciation, grammar, and personal opinions, is the most important of the four exams. Therefore, the most important aspect of the IELTS speaking exam is accurately comprehending the IELTS speaking topics and IELTS speaking questions.
You must take the IELTS sample test on a regular basis and practice responding to the commonly asked IELTS speaking questions in order to achieve a respectable score on the IELTS test. This can help you prepare better for the IELTS speaking exam by increasing your language skills and self-confidence.
The IELTS speaking test consists of three sections: the general introductory interview, the Cue Card part, and the follow-up questions. A variety of factors related to your beliefs, character, and English language proficiency are assessed in each portion of the speaking test.
Preparing the applicant for the IELTS test is the goal of the first session. During your IELTS preparation, it is imperative that you write a succinct, basic introduction of yourself for the introductory interview section of the speaking test, as you will be asked some general questions about yourself and your area of study.
The second and most crucial part of the IELTS speaking exam is the Cue Card component. You will be given a Cue Card with a topic chosen at random printed on it, and you will have two minutes to discuss it. Time yourself when practicing your monologues on the IELTS speaking topics that are most frequently asked as part of your IELTS exam preparation.
It is not permitted for you to take longer than the allotted time. You need to practice speaking on typical IELTS speaking questions as part of your preparation in order to better grasp the structure of each exam session. It's important for you to know how to structure your response, emphasize flexibility, and express your ideas in a way that makes sense.
The follow-up questions segment, which makes up the third section of the IELTS speaking test, asks you a series of follow-up questions that are based on your response to the IELTS speaking topics. Answering these IELTS speaking questions will require you to be both quick and clever. Your IELTS speaking test score will soar if your comments are sufficiently compelling and thought-provoking in this area of the test, which evaluates your command of the language.
IELTS exam sample 1: Describe an advertisement that you don't like
To answer IELTS speaking topics like these you have to lead with your unwavering opinions. These types of topics deserve proper opinionated responses with facts and judgments. Hence to approach IELTS speaking topics like these, you must have a strong snake of right and wrong and be very specific with your likes and dislikes. It is not necessary that the examiner would agree with your opinions on topics like these, still, you need to stay strong on your feet and answer them according to your will. Remember, the IELTS speaking test will gauge your sense of responsibility and the strength of your mindset too.
To approach this topic, here are some key pointers you might want to mention in your response to make it more systematic and structured :
- What is the Advertisement for
- Describe the Advertisement
- Reasons behind your dislike
- Concluding opinions
Let's now look directly at the first IELTS exam sample where we have followed the same sequence in forming the response.
What is the Advertisement for
Numerous advertisements are playing on the television every time I sit down to watch a show, series, or game. There are a few ads that provoke you to think and give a nice, heartwarming message, while there are some ads that feels offensive and silly to me. There is one advertisement that I find very offensive as a woman, and that is the Men’s body spray advertisement.
Describe the Advertisement
I have seen the same concept in several men’s deodorant or body spray advertisements and I totally disapprove of their concept. The Advertisement starts with a guy worrying about getting dejected by women because of bad body odor, while a friend suggests a new body spray. Once he applies the body spray, his entire personality and physical appearance change, and multiple women get stuck on him like a moth to a flame. The ending note of the advertisement is that a man should apply the spray to attract women like magnets.
Reasons behind your dislike
I find the concept of the advertisement to be very illogical and offensive towards women. It shows women to be shallow and mindless enough to deject men based on their body odor and get attracted to them just by a nice-smelling body spray. Also, the overall ending note of the advertisement gives the wrong message to the youth of our generation, as it shows infidelity as an acceptable norm, which is meaningless. These are a few reasons why I feel disappointed every time I watch this advertisement.
Concluding opinions
In this world where content is the king, I feel brand promotional strategies need to be well-defined and well-thought-out so that they are appealing to the customer. Any content on television is capable of affecting the mindset and opinions of today’s youth. So brands should carefully craft their promotional advertisements with proper social messages and creativity in order to attract more quality customers instead of random impulsive buyers.
IELTS exam sample 2: Describe an advertisement that you don't like
What is the Advertisement for
While browsing through television content, I have come across an advertisement a couple of times which has infuriated me because of the product and its concept they are promoting. The advertisement I am talking about is for an electric vibrating belt which apparently reduces belly within a few weeks.
Describe the Advertisement
The ad consists of people talking about being bullied due to their excessive weight and then seeing the belt on TV and purchasing it. Within 2 weeks they have lost so much weight that they have the figure of a professional model now. Their “fit-to-fab” transformation is shown in the most unrealistic way possible, plus there is no proof of the genuine authenticity of the product.
Reasons behind your dislike
This advertisement is the epitome of fraudulent advertisements of useless products on television. Any individual in the right frame of mind can understand the unrealistic promises the product serves. But to an individual who is desperate to lose weight, this product sets a trap to entice them. The impractical transformation of people shown in this advertisement could attract innocent people who think it is achievable and spend their hard-earned money on useless products like these.
Concluding opinions
It pains me to admit that there are several impulsive buyers in my country who believe anything and everything that is shown on television and invest their money in it only to face the wrath of despair and fraud. Advertisements like these should go through a proper screening and approval process before being aired on television for the common public so that they can be saved from the false promises of random ineffective products.
Follow-up IELTS speaking questions for the IELTS speaking test
Section III of the IELTS speaking test consists of the IELTS speaking follow-up questions section. Depending on their response from the IELTS test cue card part, candidates are entitled to respond to a series of IELTS speaking questions in this section provided by the examiner. You should dig into your IELTS preparation by practicing your responses to the IELTS speaking questions, as the follow-up portion is intended to assess the applicant's conversational and communication skills. Now, let's examine some follow-up questions about the previously mentioned IELTS exam sample.
Do you think people are influenced by advertisements?
Answer: Absolutely. I think any visual content, be it a television series, movie, or advertisement, has the power to influence the mindset of people in a good or bad way. An advertisement with a refreshing concept would definitely attract more attention than inconsistent clichés and repetitive concepts of advertisements. There have been numerous incidents when my mother has purchased a product after getting attracted by their advertisement on television. Nowadays, we can witness many ads with social and cultural messages that are strong enough to leave a mark on the minds of the common people.
What types of advertisements attract your attention in a good way?
Answer: There are many advertisements on television that are thought-provoking enough to attract my attention in a positive way. All the advertisements that promote the equality of human rights, discarding of the caste system, and genuine friendship among children tend to grab my attention. There are many advertisements with a short story wrapped around it which gives me immense pleasure while watching. Any fresh and unique concept of advertisement can seize my attention with its originality and creativity.
What are the pros and cons of an advertisement?
Answer: The advantages of advertisement from a business point of view are immense in the field of promotion. One attractive piece of ad can capture the attention of millions of people which transcends into elevated profit margins. From a customer’s standpoint, an advertisement is meant to inform them about a new product or a new variant or promotion scheme on an existing product which helps them judge its requirements to them. Like two faces of a coin, advertisements can be of a huge disadvantage to a customer. Common people hardly understand the difference between authentic and fake products from an advertisement, which leaves them extremely susceptible to fraudulent activities. Thus it is very important to verify the authenticity of a product before buying it.
