Describe a person you met at a party and enjoyed conversation with: IELTS Cue Card
The International English Language Testing System, sometimes known as the IELTS test, is one of the most sought-after English certification exams, recognized globally in prestigious universities and business organizations. The Listening test, Reading test, Writing test, and Speaking test are the four primary components of the IELTS exam. The general introduction, the cue card segment, and the follow-up questions section comprise the three sections of the IELTS speaking test, which takes 11 to 14 minutes to complete for each candidate.
The general introductory round of the IELTS speaking test is the first part of the test, during which you will be asked questions about your educational history, hobbies, and other general information. You could think of this part of the speaking test as the warm-up round where the candidate settles down before the subsequent, more significant rounds.
The following stage is called the Cue Card section, commonly known as the IELTS speaking topics round. You receive a cue card with a predetermined topic on which you must deliver a thorough two-minute speech. You have one minute to collect your thoughts and mentally draft your monologue's outline. This part of the test demands a lot of concentration and fast thinking to make sure the person is not overwhelmed by the IELTS speaking questions.
The follow-up questions portion of the IELTS speaking exam is the third and last round. You must respond appropriately to the examiner's follow-up questions, which are based on your responses to the IELTS speaking topics. Good IELTS preparation is required for this section, along with a proper understanding of the IELTS speaking questions. IELTS speaking topics - Sample 1
What was the party or event for?
A few days back, I went to a housewarming party for my cousin. My cousin Rajesh and his wife had invested their saving for a long time to finally be able to buy a house. Thus it was a very happy occasion for all of us.
Who is this person?
I made a new friend at this party. Her name is Mithi. She is the five-year-old daughter of Rajesh. While the elders were busy discussing the decoration of the house, the size of the property, or the mouthwatering food, Mithi slowly approached me and whispered in my ears, asking me to come and see her room. She took me grabbed my finger with her fist and took me to her room.
What was the conversation about?
I have always been a hit among children, so this was not surprising for me. As Mithi and I sat on her small bed, we discussed her favorite colors, her favorite books, and her favorite toys. One by one she showed me all her toys and narrated what she liked about each one of them. We chatted about her school, friends, and studies for quite some time. After that, she insisted I listen to her reciting a poem to which I instantly agreed. While she recited the nostalgic tale of “Humpty Dumpty” and “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star”, I remembered my old days of memorizing those poems. After that, we played a few rounds of hide and seek, which I lost every time, maybe intentionally. Every time she managed to find me, she smiled in a mischievous way which was too enticing to be ignored.
Concluding thoughts
We ended our day with a kiss goodbye and I handed her a small box of chocolate which made her eyes sparkle. She hugged me with her small arms and made me promise to visit her again. Hence Rajesh’s housewarming party ended up being a very memorable event in my life as I made a new friend, a friend who is free from the complicated world and has the best laughter on earth.
IELTS speaking topics - Sample 2
What was the party or event for?
I went to a photography exhibition a few months ago, with a friend of mine. I love to look at different forms of art, so I am a frequent visitor at art and photography exhibitions.
Who is this person?
At this event, I met an old classmate of mine, who was there to showcase her photography. It was as if we met for the first time. At first, it took me a few minutes to recognize her since we had lost touch for a long time, but once I recognized her, we had a great time together.
What was the conversation about?
We started chatting about our golden old days in school when we had no worries in our minds. We talked about our old teachers and laughed at the funny nicknames we had given them back then. Then we started discussing our personal lives, and our current interests and even gossiped a bit. It was as if we had never been apart. She then took me around to introduce me to her colleagues and went on to introduce me to some more photographer friends of hers who were there to showcase their art as well. As we roamed around in the gallery, she narrated the thoughts that went being each of her portraits. She also shared small anecdotes from the moments when the shots were taken. I felt inspired and moved at the same time.
Concluding thoughts
My conversation with her brought me closer to photography. She inspired me with her brilliant thinking and photography skills. It was one of my most memorable visits to an exhibition and I would carry the remnants of our insightful conversations in my heart for a very long time.
IELTS speaking questions - Follow-up question
How do you prefer starting a conversation?
Answer 1: Initiation is probably the most difficult part of a conversation with someone we are unfamiliar with. Thus I prefer to start a conversation with some key pointers I have used as an ice breaker. I usually start by enquiring about the name, occupation, and hobby of the other person, try to find common ground, and then continue the conversation in a natural and elegant manner.
Answer 2: I am usually very good at starting a conversation whenever I deem it to be necessary. To initiate a conversation, I rely on my favorite pointers whom I call the “appetizers”. I start by asking about the topics of interest of the other person and slowly dive into their hobbies. This method has always helped me to warm up to an unknown person in every situation.
Do you prefer making new friends?
Answer 1: According to me, friendship should not be characterized by the terms old or new. Friendship is like an emotion that needs to be felt deeply. I prefer to make friendships that last longer than making small insignificant relationships. Maybe that is the reason why I have very few close friends, but the ones I have, are for a lifetime. When it comes to friendship, I prefer quality over quantity.
Answer 2: In general I like meeting new people and making new relationships. Now whether these relations would mold into eternal friendship or not is our luck. I don’t tend to overthink before meeting new people and developing relationships with them. I prefer to take a natural course when it comes to developing relations or friendships.
What type of conversations do you usually enjoy?
Answer 1: When it comes to having a conversation, I usually go with the flow. The course of a conversation is entirely dependent on the person I am having it with. Say, for example, I am having a conversation with a dear friend, I would prefer to have a deep talk about our lives, whereas if I am speaking to someone from my office, I would opt for a formal conversation about our common interest.
Answer 2: I prefer having deep long conversations with my near and dear ones whenever I get the opportunity permits. Long talks about old days filled with moments of nostalgia are the genre of conversation I enjoy the most. These types of conversations are like antidepressants for an emotional person like me.
