International English Language Testing System or commonly known as the IELTS test is one of the most prominent English certification tests for non-native speakers of English who want to move abroad to live or pursue education. The Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking test make up the four main components of the IELTS exam. The three portions of the IELTS speaking test take approximately 14 minutes to complete for any applicant.

The general introductory round of the IELTS speaking test is the first section in which the examiner asks questions about your educational history, interests, and other preferences. This part of the speaking test can be deemed as the preliminary round for the candidate to get comfortable before the crucial rounds that follow.

The next round is the Cue Card section also known as the IELTS speaking topics round. A cue card with a specific topic is assigned to you on which you need to deliver a speech for 2 minutes. You will get 1 minute to organize your thoughts and prepare the key pointers of the monologue. This round demands a lot of concentration and thinking on the feet so that the IELTS speaking questions are not too overwhelming to the candidate.

The final round of the IELTS speaking test is the follow-up questions section. The examiner asks a few questions in this round that are based on your response to the IELTS speaking topics or the topic itself. For adequate IELTS preparation, you must follow the 3-P’s rule mentioned below.

  • Prepare: You need to prepare answers to the frequently asked IELTS speaking questions.
  • Practice: You must practice your speech on common IELTS speaking topics. Try to give at least one IELTS sample test every day
  • Prioritize: Prioritize specific points of the speech which need to be mentioned and practice them while being timed.

Fluency, Pronunciation and Proficiency in English are some of the major factors of IELTS speaking test evaluation. So give ample importance to them while preparing your answers on the IELTS exam sample questions for your IELTS speaking exam. We have prepared some model answers and follow-up questions with their responses on one of the IELTS speaking topics so that you can understand the structure and format of the IELTS speaking questions.

IELTS speaking questions topic:

Describe a new law you would like to introduce in your country

This is a tricky topic to discuss so we have mentioned some key pointers you can refer to while preparing your speech on this topic for the speaking test.

  1. What is the law you want to enforce?
  2. Explain the law and penalties
  3. Why do you want to enforce this law?

IELTS speaking topics  sample 1

What is the law you want to enforce?

In several parts of India, women are still asked to wrap their faces with a huge veil or the end of their saree in the presence of elders after marriage. I think this rule is extremely uncomfortable for a woman to follow and on top of that, I find it to be very illogical and unnecessary. Thus I would prefer a law against such uncomfortable and illogical customs laid for women in India.

Describe the law

The law I want India to enforce for married women can be termed as the “No-Veil Law”. This law should entitle any woman to abolish the uncomfortable custom of covering their face with a veil and any individual who forcefully tries to enforce this custom on a woman in the name of tradition, should be entitled to strict actions by the government including jail time. I am certain that the “No-Veil” law would be a huge breather of relief for all the women who have to hide their faces behind their veils or “pallu” all day long.

Why do you want to enforce this law?

I feel that the custom of  “veil” or “pallu” is extremely illogical and unbearable for a woman. The tradition of “pallu” was apparently created to show respect to one’s elders, but I find a few irrationality in this tradition. Firstly, if this rule is to show respect to an elder, why does it only apply to women? Why does it not apply to man as well? Are they not required to show respect to an elder? My second question would be, if women are supposed to cramp up behind a piece of cloth because some other person needs to be respected, why does that rule not apply to women as well? Do only elders deserve respect and not the younger people?

Impactful Conclusion :

These are the few reasons I find the “pallu” custom to be extremely unjustified and hence my petition to the Government of India would be to abolish this rule and incorporate a law for it. I feel a woman deserves equal respect as that of another man irrespective of their age, caste or creed, and they should not have to go through years of pain because of some tradition.

What is the law you want to enforce?

As you know for the past 4-5 years the weather condition in India is moving towards extreme severity. The heat some of the major cities of the country experience during the summer is excruciating and unbearable. Hence I want the Government of India to enforce a law for “Work from Home” during summer for 2 weeks for all offices and IT firms.

Describe the law

This law would require all the IT firms and offices to enforce the “work from home” rule for 2 weeks every year to avoid the extreme heat waves during summer. This would prevent heat strokes and other health concerns an office goer faces during summer and help them be more productive while working from the comfort of their homes. The health of an employee should be valued by all the organizations because a healthy employee would be a more productive employee.

Why do you want to enforce this law?

During summer I have witnessed the news of several people falling ill every day due to severe heat waves in cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai and Bangalore. This should be a big concern for both employees and organizations who don’t support a “work from home” culture in their offices. If there are alternatives that can be availed to secure the health of people, then I feel there should be laws to do so.

Worthy Conclusion :

I feel that this law would be a sigh of relief to many individuals who have to travel for hours in the scorching heat of summer for work. Just like we have summer vacations in schools and colleges, employees would gain some benefit from this law if it is enforced by the Government of India.

IELTS speaking  exam: Follow-up question

Why do you feel this law is necessary?

From Answer 1 : I feel law against “pallu” custom is necessary in today’s society because women are now equally capable and worthy in this day and age. I also feel respect is not something which needs to be shown by covering some parts of a woman’s body. In my opinion, respect cannot be inherited, it should be earned. Respect can be shown by giving preference to a person, speaking in formal speech, or even touching their feet. A veil wrapped around the face of a woman can only cause discomfort not disrespect.

From Answer 2 :  The growing health concern among office goers in major parts of India during summer is alarming. There should be strict laws against organizations that urge or force their employees to neglect their health, just for a few hours of work within the office premises. I feel the advancement of technology has given us enough means to work from the comfort of our homes when we feel it is unbearable to step outside. Hence the law I am prescribing would be of utmost importance for all office goers during summer.

Do you think law is important?

Answer: Certainly. Law is important for every constitution, so that people stay in the righteous path in their lives. There is a fine line between right and wrong and that line is intensified by laws enforced by the Government of the country. Having said that, I also feel that the establishment of a law is not enough for a constitution. There should be proper means of detecting the unlawful citizens and enforcing the repercussions of the law on them. If a law is not enforced, it would be of no help to the people or the government.

What are the potential hurdles that can occur while enforcing your prescribed law?

From Answer 1 : I think the biggest hurdle would be to convince those strata of people who feel threatened by the freedom of women and try to trap them behind the bars of traditions and customs. These people are very hard to convince since they are very rigid in their ideologies. Thus the major struggle which we need to face before enforcing this law would be to control and convince these people and bring them out of the darkness of “pseudo-traditional beliefs”.

From Answer 2 :  The major hurdle which needs to be crossed in order to enforce the law would be to ensure that the productivity and economy of the country is not affected by it. Also “work-from-home” is not possible for a huge sector of workers like factory workers, daily wage earners, hospital staff and doctors. There needs to be a provision of some alternative solution for these workers in this law.
