The IELTS exam was created to help those who want to relocate overseas to pursue international work opportunities or gain admission to foreign universities. The four sections on reading, writing, speaking, and listening are all important, whether you're preparing for the Academic or General IELTS Training exam. Academic and General Task 2 demands you to respond to a specific argument or assertion. The time limit is 40 minutes, with a word count of 250.

Criteria of IELTS Scoring System: Writing Task 2

In order to perform the IELTS Writing Task 2, 4 different criteria will be applied for the evaluation of the band. There are some specific cases when a 9-band score can be produced only if an answer is prepared rather thoroughly. The following is a more detailed treatment of the four criteria. Read the sample responses and compare them to the following band score to improve your IELTS writing band.

  • Task Achievement: This criterion modified the student’s performance based on the capacity to organize an answer to the formulated question. When it comes to the question, one should be able to rephrase the question in the introduction and then start to answer it. You have to produce a minimum of 250 words in order to construct a proper response to the essay.
  • Coherence and cohesion: This criterion assesses how effectively you propose the idea that you have in mind. These are the ways of using appropriate words, appropriate linking words, banning the repetition of the same words, and making your response easy to summarize for your score.
  • Grammatical accuracy and range: Here, it can be achieved through the use of the appropriate tenses, grammar, and syntax. It is also for this reason that the right syntax and punctuation must be used at all times
  • Lexical Resource: As to this criterion, it is necessary to provide a goal with a clearly diverse bill vocabulary to succeed. Also, it is suggested that overly complex sentences’ use and sophisticated vocabulary should also be limited in order to get a better result on this particular kind of assessment and not make spelling, synonym, or word structure mistakes.

Deleting Words in IELTS Writing

You can make modifications to your IELTS writing, and it is recommended that you delete words and correct errors when proofreading it. It is done by drawing a straight line through the word to be crossed out, and numerous pupils prefer this method; it is recommended that this line be thick and clear so that the examiner can quickly detect the alteration that has to be made. In terms of edition, if you want to add words to your phrases, use the "∧" sign. However, ensure that these additions do not affect the reading of the result.

It is acceptable to make modifications while writing, but excessive revisions may indicate poor planning. To avoid or reduce any type of adjustment, it is best to have a well-thought-out outline before writing the essay. As a result, your planning should include all of your main points of discussion and subtopics so that you can write clearly and with complete understanding. Another consideration while writing is that it should be easy to read. As a result, if the examiner is unable to comprehend some of these words, or perhaps the entire sentence, the relevant portion will be deducted, potentially lowering your score significantly.

As a result, it is critical that the crossed-out words be emphasized, while the replaced words are tidy and legible. Writing your essays in cursive before the test is a fantastic strategy to ensure that when it's time to write the test, you don't obscure your writing and lose marks. Following these procedures can help you avoid frequent errors and make your writing as clear and, as a result, high-scoring as possible.

Types of essays: IELTS Writing Task 2

There are six different sorts of essays, but you will only be assigned one. In order to compose your response, you must first grasp the type of essay, as the structure of the essay is determined by the type. This will have a direct impact on the task achievement component of the grading criterion. Now let's begin with an overview of the six types of essays.

  • Two Questions or Direct Questions: The purpose of this essay is to create a straightforward structure that incorporates relevant examples. The inquiry will have one or more questions to which you must provide direct responses.
  • Opinion-based: You must express your opinions or points of discussion on a certain topic, whether you agree or disagree. If you agree with the argument, simply state your point of view rather than the disagreement, and vice versa.
  • Problem-Solution or Cause-and-Effect: This style of essay requires you to identify the root cause of the problem given in the question and propose appropriate solutions.
  • Discussion: You will be given an argument and must write about both sides of it. You may be asked to offer your thoughts on a specific position with which you agree or disagree. Please bear in mind that you should only provide your opinion if specifically solicited.
  • Balanced opinion: In these essays, you must discuss an argument and demonstrate that you agree with certain aspects of it while somewhat disagreeing with others. You must select one point of view with which you agree more strongly than the other while staying marginally in agreement with the other.
  • Advantages and disadvantages: When writing an essay in this structure, you must consider both the benefits and drawbacks of a given topic. This style of essay may also ask you to express your viewpoints. If so, you must express your opinion; if it is not required, you must reject it and avoid offering one.

IELTS writing task 2 topics:

Computers are being used more and more in education. Some people say that this is a positive trend, while others argue that it is leading to negative consequences. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Let's look at how to determine the sort of essay from a given topic. The aforementioned topic is a "Discussion Essay." However, in this question, your opinion is also requested. You can see the keyword "Discuss both points of view and express your opinion." The prefix "discuss" indicates that this is a discussion essay, while "give your opinion" means that your input is required.

Let us now evaluate the essay's structure.

  • Introduction: Rewrite the question from the introduction. Mention that you will discuss both arguments. Give your opinion, as it has been requested.
  • Body 1: Describe the argument in the first line. Give two examples to back up your claim.
  • Body 2: Discuss the alternative issue of contention. Give two examples to back up the alternative argument.
  • Conclusion: Restate the question and express your perspective again.

Band 6

Computers are increasingly being employed in educational settings. Some see this as a benefecial development, while others believes it is having a negative impact. I believe that the merits surpass the demerits of it.

Some believe that it is a good virtue that computers are becoming increasingly popular in education. This is because, with the advancement in technology, it is far more easy to teach children about various concepts like internal human organs or geography and also interractive learning not only give the children a better perspective on learning but also makes the classes more engaging. Also, with the advent of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, it has now becomes pivotal to include computers in the curiculum and keep the students update with technological advancements.

On the other hand, some people argues that computers are becoming increasingly important in schooling. This is because sofisticated learning takes away from the habit of learning from books which is also important for cognitive development. Also, this creates discrimination for lower-middle-class students who might not be able to afford high-priced devices and using computers can also distract the students during learning and a lot of students ends up spending time on social media or gaming.

There is an increase in the use of computers in teaching and people have bifurcated views regarding this. I am however of the opinion that the benefits is far more promenent than the disadvantages and this is because of interactive learning, deep-diving into intricate concepts, and being up-to-date with technology, which is definitely helpful for the learning journey of students.

Clarification on the band:

The grammatical errors in the Grammatical Range and Accuracy part of the evaluation have been underlined and are in italics. The spelling errors in the Lexical Resources portion of the evaluation are in italics. The lengthy sentences are in bold which is categorized as coherence and cohesive in the evaluation.

Band 7

Technology, especially computers in classrooms can be regard as a progresive addition to the learning environment by some people while others may have a negative view of it. To my mind, the benefits produce by this tendancy are much more obvious than the negative aspects.

Those who support the integrasion of computers into learning post that learning has transform greatly due to technology and computers and that it is easy teach things like the human body or geographic features. Such an aproach to learning not only assists students in grasping the concept of lessons conducted in the class but also make it more interesting. In addition, with today’s world gradually becoming encompased with Artificial intelligence and Machine learning, the integration of computers has become inevitable in an effort to equip the young generation with the knowledge on how to handle them.

On the other hand, the oponents to this belief insist that computers may replace traditional book-based learning which is extremely important for the development of cognitive inteligence. Furthermore, such change may lead increased inequality because students coming from deprived backgrounds cannot afford such devices. Also, there are posibilities of students getting distracted by social media or games at the same time as they are being taught is a big risk.

Thus, however, waranted the concerns regarding the augmenting use computers in education, I assert that the advantages – computer-assisted learning, in-depth analysis of concepts and ideas, and computer literacy – outweigh all the concerns and in fact, enhance the educational process.

Clarification on the band:

The grammatical errors in the Grammatical Range and Accuracy part of the evaluation have been underlined and are in italics. The spelling errors in the Lexical Resources portion of the evaluation are in italics.

Band 9

The introduction or integration of technology especially computers in the educational environment is considered a progressive addition by some educators; however, there are others who harbor reservations about its impact. In my estimation, the positives conferred by this trend far outweigh any potential detriments.

Proponents of integrated computing in curriculum believe that the transpiration of new technologies has revolutionized the learning process to make complex aspects like human body structure or geographical situations easy to explain. Apart from enhancing student’s understanding of the materials taught in class this technologically enriched approach enhances the learning process with increased interest. In addition, as humanity advances more into the artificial intelligence and machine learning domain, the use of computers in education is inevitable in an attempt to prepare the young generations to adeptly navigate these burgeoning fields.

However, critics argue that excessive use of computers can weaken the basic principles of traditional literary learning that play a key role in fostering cognitive development. Moreover, this could complicate the issues of socio-economic diversity as students from underprivileged backgrounds may find themselves unable to afford the requisite devices. There are always chances that students succumb to distraction from instructional time and get more involved in social media, gaming, or any other related matters.

Therefore, despite the doubts about the growing trend of computers in education not being considered consequential, it is my considered opinion that benefits, including better learning outcomes, improved ideas mastery, computer proficiency, etc all overshadow the demerits thus improving the educational process, and advancing it.

Clarification on the band: There are no mistakes. The flow of the essay is better and the vocabulary used is of high lever.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I send an organization a copy of the test result form?

The Test Report Form can be sent in duplicate to five different institutions, immigration authorities, and other organizations for whom you are applying directly from the IELTS organization. If you would like us to do this, kindly provide the relevant addresses on the Test Taker Portal within two years of taking the test. Please make sure to check with your local test center before sending in your results, as some universities and institutions may have subscribed to electronic score downloads.

How can I improve my grammar during my IELTS exam preparation?

First, you need to identify the areas where you tend to make mistakes. Once you figure the topics out, go through the rules of grammar of that topic. Once you are confident that you have understood the details, try solving grammar-related questions, especially error-detection topics. This will help you improve your grammar and it will automatically increase your score on the IELTS test.

How do you calculate the IELTS exam band score?

Your IELTS test band score is calculated by averaging your reading, writing, listening, and speaking test scores. The number is then rounded to the nearest whole or half band. If your average ends in.75, your IELTS exam result is rounded to the next band, and if it ends in.25, it is rounded to 5. It is important to remember that any score less than .25 or 0.75 will be rounded down. For example, if your score is 6.35, it will be rounded to 6.5, 6.65 to 6.5, and 6.10 to 6.
