Overview
Fresenius University of Applied Sciences is a distinguished private institution, recognized by the German Science Council and accredited as a university of applied sciences. Established by Carl Remigius Fresenius in 1848, the university’s origins trace back to the Fresenius Chemical Laboratory and its associated laboratory school. Over the years, the institution has evolved significantly, reflecting its long-standing commitment to educational excellence.
Initially focused on chemical engineering, the university expanded its scope over the decades. By 1931, it had gained state recognition for training chemical engineers. In 1962, it broadened its offerings to include an engineering degree alongside its existing chemical engineering program. Three years later, it was upgraded to an engineering school, and in 1971, it officially became recognized for its chemical engineering degree program.
In 1995, the university relocated from Wiesbaden to Idstein, marking a new chapter in its history. The acquisition of the vocational school for speech therapy in Darmstadt in 1997, which later moved to Frankfurt am Main in 2010, further diversified its academic portfolio. By 1998, the university had introduced new departments in business & media and health & social affairs, leading to its renaming as Europa Fachhochschule Fresenius. The early 2000s saw continued expansion, with new locations established in Cologne (2003), Zwickau (2004, closed in 2016), Hamburg, and Munich (2008). This period also saw the university rebranded as Hochschule Fresenius, giving it its current name.
The university's growth continued with the opening of a Düsseldorf location in 2012 and a significant restructuring of its departments, which included the introduction of school and academy models. This restructuring allowed for more specialized and streamlined educational programs.
In 2013, the Business & Media Department expanded its offerings with the establishment of an international branch, the International Business School, in Cologne and Berlin, offering programs entirely in English. The same year, the Business Academy Fresenius (BAF) was introduced in Cologne, focusing on facilitating the transition from work to study. The Berlin Study Center of the Business & Media Department was also established in the 2014/15 academic year.
The university’s international presence grew further in 2016 with the opening of a study center in New York City. This year also marked the launch of distance learning programs under the newly established Onlineplus department, including bachelor’s and master’s degrees in business administration, business psychology, media and communication management, and management in healthcare. Additionally, the Carl Remigius Medical School was spun off but remains part of the university's medical faculty. The Onlineplus department consolidates the university’s distance learning offerings into a cohesive online study concept. The Wiesbaden location, the university's original site, was re-established in March 2019, continuing its legacy of providing high-quality education.
