Criteria of scoring in the Writing Task 2

Four separate components will be used to grade the IELTS Writing Task 2, and each will be considered 25% of the total IELTS writing band score. You need to fully understand these ideas in order to earn a 9 band score because doing so will help you plan your responses.

  • Task Achievement: The aim of this section is to offer a proficient answer to the question. It is imperative that you possess the ability to accurately describe the situation and provide a focused answer. It is required that you write a minimum of 250 words and follow all instructions for structuring the answer in a manner consistent with the essay's style.
  • Coherence and Cohesion: This criterion will be used to assess how well you articulate the topic at hand. The effectiveness of your use of language, paragraph connections, avoidance of term repetition, and comprehensibility will all be factors in determining your band score.
  • Lexical Resource: Having a diverse, well-versed vocabulary can help you perform better in this section. Additionally, you will perform better if you use straightforward language and minimize spelling and word construction mistakes.
  • Grammatical Accuracy and Range: You must use correct tense and grammatical constructs in order to satisfy this requirement. Along with sentence structure, you also need to employ appropriate punctuation.

Tips to enhance your answers in the IELTS writing test

  • Make your introduction and conclusion impactful. This automatically elevates the level of your essay.
  • Do not make the essays too lengthy. While it is okay to go over the word limit, do not stretch it. This will cause redundancy and impact both coherence and cohesion as well as the task achievement part of the essay.
  • Ensure that spellings are correct, and do not use any word if you are unsure of its spelling.

IELTS writing task 2 Sample Question with Answer:

Some people think that all university students should study whatever they like. Others believe that they only be allowed to study subjects that will be useful in the future, such as those related to science and technology. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

This is a discussion-based essay. However, in the question, you can see that your opinion is asked. So in this case, you need to specify which side you agree with. Let's examine the essay's structure.

  • Introduction: Rewrite the question in the introduction. Declare that you will talk about both arguments. Give your opinion since it has been requested.
  • Body 1: Describe the argument you are discussing in the first line. Give two instances to back the argument.
  • Body 2: Mention the other point of contention. Give two instances to back this argument as well.
  • Conclusion: In conclusion, restate the question in your own words and express opinions.

IELTS writing task 2 topics with answers:

Some people think that all university students should study whatever they like. Others believe that they only be allowed to study subjects that will be useful in the future, such as those related to science and technology. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Band 6

Some believe that students at universities should pursue their interests in their field of passion while others thinks that students should only be permitted to study topics like science and technology if they would be beneficial in the future. In this essay both sides of the argument will be discussed however, I believe the former is the better approach.

Some believe that university students ought to pursue their interests in their studies. This allow them to excel in their academics as they are not burdened with something they don't like. For example, someone who is interested in history should be given the freedom to pursue it instead of choosing engineering since their result will directly depend on their personal aptitude, and also, this will ensures in-job satisfaction as a career is a long-term time commitment where more than half of people's lives are invested so it is important to be content every day which only a field of interest can provide.

There are some who think that they should be limited to studying diciplines like science and technology, which will be valuable in the future. This is primarily because of the fact that these fields is booming into the current time. For instance, there is a lot of job opportunities in this field and thus pursuing this will guarantee a job. Also, this ensure financial stabality in the long run.

Some individuals believe that college students should pursue their interests while others think that students should only be permitted to study topics like science and technology if they will be beneficial in the long run but I stand by the former viewpoint.

Clarification on the band:

  • The evaluation's Grammatical Range and Accuracy section contains the grammatical errors.
  • The spelling errors listed in the evaluation's Lexical Resources section.
  • The extended and complicated sentences that could have been broken up into multiple parts. These are included in the evaluation's cohesion and coherence section.

Band 7

Some people have proposed that university students should be put to practicing what they love in their areas of specalization. However, there are those who argue that students should be limited with what they pursue of options such as science and technology which will be useful in the future. In this essay both arguments be discussed. However, I believe in the first view.

Proponents of the idea that students should be allowed to pursue interests of their choice argue that enabling students to do this improves performance since the child will approaches a subject with zeal. For example, a history-inclined student be allowed to study it and not be forced to undertakes engineering because his or her performance depends on the interest he or she has. Also, this perspective create job satisfaction in the long run. As a career spans a rather large part of one’s life, it becomes important to have an acute interest or passion for or in what one is doing.

However, some people has argued that students should be guided towards sectors such as science and technology as they are considered to held a better future outlook. This viewpoint is based on the observation of the high level of demand for workers in the given sphers at the moment. For instance, it is quite promising to seek employment in these professions as, as a rule, it guarantee one’s employment and good earnings in the future.

Some people think that the faculties in universities is the only relevant subjects related to science and technology, while others think students should be allowed to pursue their interests and I believe in the latter view.

Clarification on the band:

  • The evaluation's Grammatical Range and Accuracy section contains the grammatical errors.
  • The spelling errors listed in the evaluation's Lexical Resources.

Band 9

Certain people believe that university students should engage in studies driven by their area of interest. On the other hand, some people argue that education should be limited to areas that are functional for a given society such as science and technology since they are expected to result in future gains. Both of these opinions will be explained in this essay. However, I am in favor of the first opinion.

Supporters of the freedom to choose one’s ultimate interests in academics argue that this freedom improves academic delivery because students embrace their studies with passion and dedication. For example, a learner who likes history should be allowed to explore this area instead of making him or her do engineering since preference is the key to success. Also, it emphasizes career inertia representing that the desire for satisfaction should focus on the steady job. Since a given career takes a significant part of a person’s life, it becomes even more crucial to attain a long-lasting intrinsic motivation towards work and productivity.

On the other hand, it is said that students should be steered to fields like Science and technology being considered as having a brighter future than arts. This assumption is based on today’s emphasis on employment in these industries, which is perceived to be high. For instance, the search for employment in these areas is considered reasonable because it ensures a secure job and good pay.

In conclusion, there are some who believe that university curricula should be pursued in such a way that they focus on subject areas that would guarantee students an economic return. While, some people stand for students choosing their areas of interest and I favor the latter.

Clarification on the band:

There are no grammatical, spelling, or construction errors in the essay and the vocabulary used is of high level.
