The IELTS, a widely acclaimed language competency test, is necessary for admission to some universities and consideration for jobs abroad. Both the academic and general IELTS writing tests include two parts: task 1 and task 2. Writing Task 2 is important because it allows you to reflect on your ideas, points of view, creativity, and capacity to think critically and logically. Both variants of Task 2 follow the same pattern, and the overall time restriction is 40 minutes and a word limit of 250 words.

Types of essays: IELTS Writing Task 2

There are six different types of essays for assignment two, and you will be assigned one of them. Let us start with a brief overview of the many types.

  • Opinion: A topic will be presented, and there will be two sides to the argument. You must choose a side and justify your decision.
  • Problem/Solution: You will be given a statement about an issue and asked to discuss its causes and effects.
  • Discussion: A problem will be presented, and you will be required to discuss both sides of the argument and, if requested, express your preference for which side you would support.
  • Balanced Opinion: An argument will be presented to you, and you must agree or disagree with it in part. However, it is crucial to realize that you cannot pick both sides. You have to decide which side you agree with more.
  • Advantages/Disadvantages: You will be presented with a circumstance and must discuss its benefits and drawbacks. You must remember to provide an unbiased answer without revealing your opinion unless specifically asked to do so in the question.
  • Two or direct questions: In this case, you must provide accurate examples to support your responses to a direct question on a single subject.

Criteria of IELTS Scoring System: Writing Task 2

The IELTS Writing Task 2 will be scored using four unique components, each worth 25% of the overall IELTS writing band score. To receive a 9-band score, you must grasp the prerequisites and thoroughly prepare your responses. We have explained the four criteria below in detail so that you can go back and compare them to the sample responses, which will help you comprehend band scoring and finally earn a higher IELTS writing band score.

  • Task Achievement: The goal of this section is to provide a well-structured response to the question. You must be able to clearly explain the scenario and provide a solution that is relevant. To develop a response appropriate for the essay type, you must write at least 250 words and follow all formatting criteria. Each sort of essay has a particular format, so tailor your response to the question.
  • Lexical Resource: To excel in this criterion, you must have a large and diverse vocabulary. Furthermore, if you utilize basic syntax and prevent spelling, synonyms, and word structure mistakes, you will perform better in this evaluation area.
  • Coherence and cohesion: This criterion measures your ability to communicate issues clearly. The way you use the proper words, link the paragraphs, prevent repetition, and make your response easy to read all have an impact on your total score. The essay must be divided into four or more paragraphs that are properly linked.
  • Grammatical Accuracy and Range: This criterion can be met by using acceptable tenses and grammatical structures and correct grammar. It is also critical to use correct phrase structure and punctuation.

IELTS Writing Penalty for Being Under Words

In the IELTS Writing Task 2, the fixed penalty of getting a band 5 score for writing under the word count of 250 words this time but a shorter essay always pulls your marks down. The focus has shifted from quantity to quality and the growth of ideas that are being written. But the good and duly argumented answer requires enough words that can enable you to enhance ideas and substantiate the conclusions more effectively. For example, if a student is assigned Band 5, they express limited and underdeveloped ideas; for the student to be assigned Band 7 or above, they have to provide extensive development of the main ideas. For it to adequately meet these criteria, your work should be between 270 to 290 words in the event that your instructions call for that. It provides sufficient spacing in order to give enough elaboration to all the major points without straying from the topic at hand.

In particular, the introduction should be short, of about 40-50 words, to define the context of the discussion. You have to make sure the body paragraphs, which are the main part of every essay, are elaborated enough. If you decide to write two body paragraphs, it is better to write approximately 100-95 words, if you write 3 paragraphs, write 60-65 words each. The conclusion should also not be long and should be around 30-40 words, which should properly sum up the whole argument of the essay. Thus, writing over the advised word limit does not yield a high score but may cause the content to deviate from the subject of discussion, possibly reducing the scores. Also, issues such as neat and legible writing, using notes or memorized answers, and covering the entire question as much as possible are important to obtain a high band score. In conclusion, one does not suffer any dire consequence for a submission that falls below the 250-word limit, but it is crucial to see that all the ideas developed are well within the recommended preferable word length.

IELTS writing task 2 topics:

Some people say that the best way to improve public health is by increasing the number of sports facilities other however say that this would have little effect on public health and that other measures are required. Discuss both these views and give your opinion.

Let's have a look at how to determine the type of essay for a specific topic. The above-mentioned topic is a "Discussion Essay." However, in this question, your opinion is also required. You can notice the phrase "discuss both points of view and express your opinion." The prefix "discuss" denotes that this is a discussion essay, whereas "give your opinion" implies that your opinion is required. If your opinion is not requested, you will not be compelled to express it. In that instance, the question will merely read, "Discuss both points." The next section discusses the format of a discussion-based essay.

Structure of Discussion Essay

  • Introduction: Rephrase the question from the introduction. Mention that you'll be discussing both arguments. Give your opinion as requested.
  • Body 1: Explain your argument in the first line. Please provide two examples to back up your point.
  • Body 2: Address the other point of contention. Give two examples that support the opposing viewpoint.
  • Conclusion: Reword the question and, if asked, share your thoughts.

IELTS writing task 2 topics with answers:

Some people say that the best way to improve public health is by increasing the number of sports facilities other however say that this would have little effect on public health and that other measures are required. Discuss both these views and give your opinion.

Band 6

Some argue that expanding the number of sports facilities is the best approach to promoting public health, while others argues that this has little impact and that additional measures are required and in this essay, both views will be discused; however, in my opinion, expanding sports facilities alone will have little impact.

Some contends that expanding the number of sports facilities are the best approach to promote public health. For example, more facilities like gyms, swiming pools, badminton courts, or parks will encourages more people to indulge in such activities and keep them fit. This will leads to a significant impact and growth in the overall health of the comunity, which will ultimately be a great step toward preventing diseases like heart ailments, high blood pressure, or diabetes.

Some people argues that increasing the number of sports facilities will have little effect and that additional measures are required. For instance, apart from engaging in physical activity, other factors like healthy eating and a proper sleep schedule also contribute to the health of the comunity and also, to promotes public health, giving importance to establishing more hospitals, clinics, and health check-up facilities is also equally important.

Some people believe that incresing the number of sports facilities is the most effective way to promote public health, while others believe that this will have little effect and that additional measures are required. I believe that increasing sports facilities alone cannot promote good public health as there are other factors like medical administretion, healthy eating, and proper sleep that are equally important.

Clarification on the band: The grammatical errors in the Grammatical Range and Accuracy part of the evaluation have been underlined and are in italics. The spelling errors in the Lexical Resources portion of the evaluation are in italics. The lengthy sentences are in bold which is categorized as cohesion and coherence in the evaluation.

Band 7

It is stimulating controversy about whether broadening the availability of sports places is the best approach towards improving the health of the population or whether this procedure is inadequate and aditional measures are needed. In my opinion, the method of build new sports facilities for the purpose of enhancing the population’s health is not sufficient, and other steps are required.

Suporters of the extension of sports facilities opine that things like gyms, swimming pools, badminton courts, and parks can hugely increase the level of fitness in the community. This, in turn, may go a long way in boosts the health of the community, hence reducing the incidences of illnesses such as cardiovescular complications, hypertension and diabetes.

In this connection, some state that merely increasing the accessibility of sports facilities will not go very far unless it is acompanied by other strategies. For example, one has to maintain things like a balanced diet and sleep schedule, which is so vital in the maintenance of public health. In addition, the development of more healthcare facilities such as hospitals, clinics and regular health checkup centers is equally important to building a healthy comunity.

The avenue of building sports facilities is a positive phenomenon for the growth of public health, although some people opine that it still does not remain the only key to solving the problem. I agrees with the latter viewpoint and feel that other esential intervention measures that are related to health include observing medical care, feeding, and sleeping practices, which should also be incorporate into public health interventions for the improvement of the health of the population.

Clarification on the band: The grammatical errors in the Grammatical Range and Accuracy part of the evaluation have been underlined and are in italics. The spelling errors in the Lexical Resources portion of the evaluation are in italics.

Band 9

Some assert that expanding the number of sports facilities offered to the public is the most effective way of enhancing overall population health; others would like to consider this strategy insufficient and require the inclusion of other measures. For that reason, according to me the construction of the new sports facilities is insufficient in solving the issues of health of the public and corresponding measures are compulsory.

Advocates of the proliferation of sports facilities realize that the construction of gyms, swimming pools, badminton, and parks will sharply increase the fitness levels of communities. This augmentation in physical movement is expected to greatly enhance the overall health status of the public and thereby reduce the incidences of such ailments as cardiovascular diseases, high blood pressure and diabetes.

Nonetheless, some opine that merely improving access to sports facilities does not go far enough and will not produce the necessary result unless accompanied by the spectrum of health promotion activities. For instance, adherence to a balanced diet and maintaining a consistent sleep schedule are critical components in sustaining public health. The same applies to the development of upgrading hospitals, clinics, and regular health screening centers for cultivating a strong and healthy nation.

While the development of sports facilities is undeniably a positive initiative according to some people, some contend that this is not the ultimate solution. I agree with the latter view on the grounds that other equally crucial health promotion activities, particularly cautious health checks, good nutrition and appropriate sleep, have to be included in the public health domain with the aim of raising the general health status of the population to another level.

Clarification on the band: There are no grammatical or spelling problems or word repetitions. The sentences are well-written, and the vocabulary is advanced.
