The renowned language proficiency test, i.e., the IELTS test is accepted internationally in not just British English but international english. It can be given in either paper or through the computer. If you are new to it, know that there are two types of IELTS writing tests: Academic (for students) and General Training test (for professionals). Divided into four sections: reading, writing, listening, and speaking, the total duration of the test is 2 hours 45 minutes, including listening (30 minutes), reading (60 minutes), writing (60 minutes), and speaking (11-14 minutes).

For the IELTS writing test, you will be assessed for your writing skills and techniques. You will get specific variations for the two IELTS writing modules of Academic and General Training, either in topic or type of writing task.  While Writing Task 1 focuses on describing a diagram or visual data for an academic test (letter writing for the general test), Writing Task 2 requires writing an essay of 250 words. For completing both tasks within an hour, you will be awarded a score between 0-9 based on certain scoring components.

Assessment Criteria for IELTS Writing Task 2

Let us now understand the four specific criteria based on which your writing skill will be measured. To achieve a top score of band 9, it is crucial to grasp the requirements and prepare accordingly. Below, we provide a detailed explanation of these four criteria to help you understand the scoring process and improve your chances of attaining a higher IELTS writing band score.

Task Achievement: There is an evaluation of whether you have comprehensively understood and addressed the essay prompt. Your response needs to be thorough and well-developed, directly responding to all aspects of the question.

Coherence and Cohesion: This measures the organization of your essay, including the use of paragraphs and the effectiveness of linking words and phrases. It assesses how logically your ideas are presented and how well they connect from start to end.

Lexical Resource: It focuses on your use of vocabulary, including appropriate word choice, spelling, and the use of advanced language and appropriate collocations. You should demonstrate a range of vocabulary and incorporate various synonyms effectively.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: This criterion looks at your command of grammatical structures, including the correct use of tenses, subject-verb agreement, punctuation, and both complex and simple sentences. All in all, it evaluates how well you use grammar to convey your ideas accurately.

Should I indent my paragraphs in IELTS writing?

Whether one plans to write by hand or type on the computer, it is ideal to leave an empty line between each paragraph rather than choosing to indent. It is more justified to begin the sentences right at the beginning of the line and leave one line when needed to move to the next paragraph.

If you leave one line between the paragraphs, the examiner can understand that you are changing paragraphs. If they are unable to see you making the switch in paragraphs indicated by a blank line in between, you are bound to lose scores within the coherence and cohesion category that consists of 25% of writing test marks.

Will I lose marks if I indent my paragraphs in the writing task?

It is not a wrong thing to indent, but the acceptable way to make transitions to a fresh paragraph is to leave one line empty. This makes it convenient and efficient to obtain more marks as the clarity in flow and transition is seen.

Are paragraphs essential?

Paragraphing is necessary because the examiner can only mark you as good based on your use of paragraphs which falls under the criterion of coherence and cohesion. Using no paragraphs will let you score quite less. No matter how long or short your essay is, make sure to use paragraphs.

Some people believe that nowadays we have too many choices. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?: Sample Topic for IELTS Writing Task 2.

Identifying the essay type

The given prompt has a statement which is the prompt and the instruction words which are “To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement”. Depending on the instruction words, you will be expected to give your opinion if you are favoring or disfavoring the given statement. Considering what it asks for, and the essay types we know about, this type of question comes up within the category of agree/ disagree essay.

In this case, you will have to strongly state if you agree or not, especially in the introduction and conclusion. The body paragraphs will reflect on your opinion by bringing out relevant reasons with evidence to support your opinion.

Structure of the Agree/ Disagree essay

Introduction: Paraphrase the given information and state if you agree or disagree.

Body Paragraph 1: Present your reasons for supporting it and explain with examples.

Body Paragraph 2: Justify your opinion and add more instances to make it reasonable.

Body Paragraph 3(optional): You can write the opposing view and mention why you do not agree with it.

Conclusion: Restate your viewpoint and wrap it up.

Now we will look up a few of the samples written on the sample topic which are categorized in bands 6, 7, and 9 as per the assessment criteria for the writing task.

Band 6

Today, people often say we have more choices than ever before. Internet has change the way to find information for making it easier to discover product, service, and good chances. More consumption increase the offering of choices by business companies. This essay agree with the idea and show the supporting information.

As it is known the net gives us a lot of info and that involve giving a situation, a paradox of choices. The net is link by billion of device which give people access to every information, to connect with anyone anytime around world, for finishing a sort of activities. Online shoping provide many option to select products and access to abroad brands to allow more consumer choice. Luxury brand like Gucci and Prada which are famous have collection from cloths, handbags, shoe, have so many option that are exciting for people. It helps the shopers to compare prices and type to choose the best.

When a lot of consumer are there, the company try to grow a variety of choice to meet customer need. People find items that suit taste which is unique, and meet their financial situation. If different dietary preference is there, there are more option available and, categorical market is there. We can talk about example where the food company offers choice like vegetarian, organic, vegan, etc. to reach whatever the consumer wants.

From my view, today people are given a lot of choice, more than what is required. The available options and choice are due to the Internet which increase access to services and products. The increase level of consumerism has allowed for more number of choice in daily life.

Views on the essay:

The essay articulates a clear position and provides pertinent examples to back up its key arguments, hence Task response is attained. There is a structured and logical flow in the essay. However, avoiding repetition at places will be helpful and transition devices including linking words should be used to improve the score in coherence and cohesion which is highlighted in bold. There are evident mistakes in word usage and spellings under lexical resource which is indicated in italics. There can be an improvement in sentence structures and grammatical correctness in using tenses, and subject-verb agreement, shown in italics and underlining, which comes under grammatical range and accuracy.

Band 7

In contemporary society, a lot of people hold belief that many choice are there for individuals. I agree with this perspective and will describe on my stance in the coming paragraphs as to discuss how there are multiple option and opportunity for everyone.

In today's world, advancing in the economy, urbanization, and technology in the globe has changed life. An instance is with the mobile phone, it gives people a wealth of info immediately. Student can also explore information, and update their understanding through accessing several subjects and textbook, from science to language. It enables people to build skills and discover career and educational opportunities, and scholarships as well. In addition, there is freedom to go to different countries and begin businesses. These developments together offer chances to obtain personal growth and build a successful career with flexible education method.

Also, there is immense entertainment options available in the current scene. The people can share experiences, videos, music, films, and many more through digital device. For this diversity, individuals do not need to cover in or follow the same sort of cultural beliefs. Editors can project different films, and actors can act for various role, while audience gets a lot of options for entertainment in music, drama, and film. So, presence of vibrant options leads to job availability.

In conclusion, I believe that people have a broad range of options in every aspect of life, whether education, entertainment, shopping, etc. As the world being so vast, and knowledge without boundary, one can attain whatever they want without remain in one place. After all, individuals need to be ready to seek numerous opportunities available for success and development.

Views on the essay:

The essay effectively addresses the prompt through clear, fully developed content, and the arguments are relevant and well-supported. Regarding cohesion and coherence, paragraphing, logical organization, and smooth flow are seen. But there are highlights in bold which indicate that a better-linking device could be used for a seamless transition, eg: for ‘also’, In addition could have been used. In italics, which is for the lexical resource, a wide range of vocabulary, synonyms, and idiomatic expressions could be employed. A wide range of grammatical structures with good control and accurate punctuation is seen. Minor grammar errors are visible which are italicized and underlined.

Band 9

It is extensively asserted that contemporary individuals are presented with a significantly broader array of choices compared to previous eras. This perspective stems from the observation that earlier generations lacked the advanced technology and access to information that characterizes the modern age. I firmly concur with the notion that people today are afforded an unprecedented level of options, a point that I will elaborate upon in the subsequent sections.

Firstly, the proliferation of choices available to individuals can be predominantly ascribed to technological advancements and the enhanced accessibility of information. Historically, the acquisition of knowledge and decision-making were constrained by the exorbitant costs and limitations of early technologies. Before the 1990s, the internet was a nascent, costly resource making information both limited and expensive. Today, however, the internet offers immediate access to a vast array of products and services, revolutionizing consumer choice. For example, when seeking a computer, there are a variety of superior and more affordable options than those in physical stores. This highlights how technological advancements have a significant spectrum of available choices, enabling more informed and economically advantageous decisions for the people.

Secondly, contemporary technology has profoundly facilitated the streamlining of the process of forging connections. Earlier in the past, forming networks necessitated substantial effort and time. However, today's sophisticated digital tools prompt rapid and effortless interactions. For instance, nowadays acquiring letters of recommendation from an employee or professor for university admissions in the US involves engaging with professors via online platforms. Previously, students were compelled to invest considerably more effort, resorting to in-person meetings which cost time and money for traveling.

In summary, the progression of time has facilitated decision-making by presenting an array of options. I strongly agree that the options are in multitude, and this trend will only persist with future advancements, thereby creating a space for augmented choices.

Views on the essay:

A well-structured with clear and logical progression, paragraphing, and transition is formed. Even it is error-free in grammar and varied-cum-sophisticated vocabulary is there.
