The IELTS, an abbreviation for the International English Language Testing System is a substantial obstacle for many aspiring international students and professionals. The tasks can be daunting, especially the Reading section. But fear not! This no-nonsense approach to IELTS Reading Band Scores gives you a full analysis of what score you have got and what you need to do to get yourself that much closer to the band scores you truly deserve.
What is an IELTS Reading Band Score?
The IELTS Reading Band Score is your ability to read and understand written English. It has a rating of 1 being limited understanding; and 9 being expert user. This score is important because it directly affects your overall IELTS test result and whether you’ll be allowed into universities and other professional programmes in other countries.
How is the IELTS Reading Band Score Calculated?
The calculation of your IELTS Reading Band Score involves a two-step process:
Step 1: Scoring Your Reading Test
The IELTS Reading test contains three full-length passages and a total of 40 questions. Every correct answer is worth one mark. There is no penalty for getting the wrong answer, so you should try all questions.
Step 2: How do we convert Raw Score to Band Score?
A pre-determined conversion table is then used to convert your raw score (number of correct answers) to a band score (1-9). It’s a table, not the public, but official IELTS resources will give you a rough idea of the relationship between the raw scores and the band scores.

How is the Band Score Calculated in the General and Academic Sections of IELTS?
The IELTS test offers two variations: Academic and General Training. Both sections feature a Reading component, but the approach to band score calculation might differ slightly.
- Academic Reading: At a glance, this section is for students who want to apply to universities abroad. The passages tend to be more complex and academic and are from scholarly journals and textbooks. In the Reading section, and General Training in particular, a given band score is usually secured with a greater raw score (that is, achieving a higher number of answers correct), compared to Academic Reading.
- General Training Reading: This section is targeted towards people who are migrating or working remotely abroad. However, the passages are more practical and deal with ordinary situations. So, for the same band score, you need a lower raw score in General Training Reading than you do in Academic Reading.
