Criteria of scoring in the Writing Task 2

Your band score for writing task 2 will be based on four factors. A band can be assigned on a scale of 0 to 9, with most students falling between 6 and 9. The following criteria apply:

  • Task Achievement: Stay on topic and give a concise synopsis in the introduction. Don't go under the allotted 250 words. Do not write an opinionated essay if your opinion is not asked for.
  • Coherence and Cohesion: Coherence is the ease with which you can express your ideas, whereas cohesion is the avoidance of duplication or irrelevant information. Use linking words like "Moreover," "For example," or "In conclusion" instead of overusing a single word. You also have to write four paragraphs or more, each of which needs to be shorter and well-connected with the other.
  • Lexical Resource: Use simple, context-appropriate language and spell words accurately. You also won't be able to edit your own writing, so take care not to write hastily. You can maintain a high vocabulary level, but in doing so, avoid using any difficult terms that are out of context or if you are not sure of the meaning of any word.
  • Grammatical Accuracy and Range: Be mindful of sentence structure and tenses. Employ succinct language and the proper punctuation.

Some Grammar Tips for you to have a higher IELTS writing band score

  • Take care of the homophones like "your" and "you're."
  • Take care of the context of "that" and "who." "That" is mostly used for non-living things while "who" is used for living objects.
  • There is a difference between "each" and "every." Each refers about two things. Every mentions at least three things. Furthermore, every refers to the group as a whole, whereas each refers to each individual item in a group.

Now let's look at an example essay topic to determine its type and how to structure the responses.

IELTS writing task 2 Sample Question and Answer:

Many governments think that economic progress is their most important goal. Some people, however, think that other types of progress are equally important for a country. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

This essay is Discussion Based. You can see that the question asks for your opinion. You must indicate whose side you support in this situation. Let's look at the essay's layout.

  • Introduction: Rephrase the question. Say that you will discuss the two points of contention. Since you have been asked, please share your thoughts.
  • Body 1: Summarize one of the arguments. Provide two examples in favor of that.
  • Body 2: Summarize the other viewpoint. Provide two examples to support this claim as well.
  • Conclusion: Repeat the question in your own words and provide your opinion.

Band 6

Economic advancement is considered by many governments to be their primary objective while on the other hand, some believe that different kinds of progress are just as vital for a nation, and in this essay, both views will be discussed. I believe in the latter viewpoint.

Economic progress are often regarded by governments as their primary objective. The primary reason are that monetory power is now equivalent to national power. For example, with a strong financial stand of a nation, the government can spend considerably on resource imports which might not be abandantly available there. Also, financial stability considerably reduce the debt of the nations and the national budget doesn't go into deficit.

Conversely, some believe that other forms of progress are just as significant for a nation and this is largely due to the fact that national progress is a culmination of progress in all sectors including finance, healthcare, education, defense, and technology, among others. For instance, a country with strong finances and enough budget allocated for healthcare will still not make progress if there is not enough efficient doctors. At the same time, money alone will not put a nation on par with others, if they are not have enough brains to adapt to technological advances.

Progress in the economy is considered by many governments to be their primary objective. Also, there is many who believe that other forms of advancement are just as significant for a nation. In my opinion, the latter is a logical viewpoint and I favor it.

Band 7

Promoting economic improvement thought of by most governments as their main goal. However, others postulate that various parameters of advancement is just as important to a country. In this essay, both views on the topic will be explained. I prefer the latter perspective.

It also be noted that among modern governments economic development is considered their main purpose. The first and foremost cause lies in the fact that today financial strength equate to the nation’s strength. For instance, due to a strong fiscal position a government can heavily fund the importation of resources that may be scarse. Also, financial stability enhances the reduction of national debts and avoids budget deficits.

On the other hand, people have also extolled other types of growth as equally beneficial to a country. National development are a collective achievement of positive changes in every facet of a nation’s life, be it in finance, health, learning institutions, security, and technology. For example, a country that has a healthy economy, with adecuate resources for financing healthcare, is lag behind if there aren’t sufficient qualified doctors. Likewise, mere financial capital shall not put a nation in the legue of other nations in case there is no matching intellect to grasp new technological changes.

Therefore, while a large number of governments worldwide will have economic development as their key aim, the rest of them is of the opinion that all sorts of development are equally important for a country. Thus, in my opinion, the latter is a more logical view, and I advocate it.

Clarification on the band:

The grammatical faults that fall under the evaluation's Grammatical Accuracy and Range. Spelling errors classified as lexical resources.

Band 9

The economic upliftment is often construed by some Governments as being the ultimate goal. Yet, some specify that there are multiple types of development that are as important for the country’s well-being. Thus, both viewpoints will be explained in this essay. As for me, I am in the second group of people and favor the latter.

In the list of present-day governments, the most important aim is viewed as economic growth. The first reason is that today, the key to dominance is financial clout, or what amounts to the same, the ability to mobilize cash on a national scale. For example, a government with a sound fiscal base can go a long way in funding the acquisition of resources that may be locally unavailable. Also, an apt monetary position facilitates the amelioration of national debts and the eradication of budget deficits.

On the opposite extreme, some people champion the importance of other types of progress for a nation. National progress is the cumulative progression propagated within such domains as fiscal, health, learning, protection, and technology. For instance, the augmented economic condition combined with satisfactory resource provision of a country for the healthcare sector will be useless if there isn’t enough stock of competent doctors. Likewise, the mere accumulation of financial capital will not transform a nation to the status of others if it lacks the intellectual prowess to embrace the advances in technology.

In conclusion, though numerous governments across the world aim to attain economic development as their supreme goal, others argue that the concept of development must encompass multiple aspects as well for a country. Accordingly, I view the second approach as more effective because it engages a multifaceted view of change and provides a balanced and structurally sound plan for the country’s advancement.

Clarification on the band:

The essay is written without mistakes in top-notch vocabulary.
