I found the process of baking extremely soothing. The precision with each ingredient has to be measured and the skill with which the designs have to be made, be it with the fondant or frosting made me want to learn it. What I really about baking is that, it is not only the taste and the outer look of the cake. It is also about how perfectly layered and eye-catching it is from the inside, once the cake is cut.

How do you plan to utilize the skill after learning it:

I do not plan to pursue baking professionally, however, I always believe in making something hand-made for my loved ones, be it on occasion or for random surprises. Baking is an intimate gesture and I would often bake for my friends and family and I am sure, the smile on their faces will give me heaps of happiness.

Introduction:

I am very fond of candles and always get excited about receiving candles as gifts. Candle-making is something that I plan to learn in the future.

How were you first introduced to it:

Although I have always loved candles, I was not aware that candles can be made at home. It was one of my colleagues that I got this information from. One day he told me randomly that he had an Instagram page where he sells candles and as he was aware that I love candles, he asked me if I would like to have any of the candles. I went through the Instagram page and at first, I thought that he was re-selling those. However, I was shocked to find that he made those at home! He explained the process to me of how he buys the wax, essence, molds, and containers. He told me that there are different kinds of wax available depending on the kind of candle that I want to make.

Why did it interest you:

I realized that making candles is not a complicated process however, it is technique driven. There are specific ways to deal with different kinds of wax and also ways to ensure that the demolding is carefully done. There is a specific duration and temperature at which the waxes should be melted and the duration of their setting time is also different. Since this requires training, I have thought of taking it up formally. I had always loved lighting candles in my room and living room and the smell in the dimly lit room really calms me down and thus, nothing will be better than learning how to make it.

How do you plan to utilize the skill after learning it:

I will definitely make candles of my own choice for myself to begin with. I also plan on using it as a gift option for my friends, colleagues, and family. Candles are a great decor material even if someone doesn't prefer to light them and thus, I am sure everyone will like it.

Conclusion:

My love for candles is therefore the reason why I want to learn to make them someday. And if God wants, who knows, I might build a business out of it.

Question 1: How important do you think is to learn something new apart from academics and work?

Answer: I believe that a person cannot spend their life only with studying and working. People need to relax and indulge themselves in activities that make them rejuvenated. Learning a new skill is a great way to engage ourselves in the process also the skill will be acquired and stay with us.

Question 2: Do you think entertainment media and the amount of time people spend engaging in social media have impacted why people now don't want to be involved in learning new skills?

Answer: For me personally, it has worked quite the opposite. I have always bumped across talented people and if the skill interests me, I have always wished to learn that. While it is true that people mostly are glued to their phones in recent times, if utilized correctly, that can be channeled to learn something new. My sister has learned makeup from social media influencers and now takes up bridal and party makeup contracts during her free weekends.

Question 3: Do you think an interest can be developed into one's profession?

Answer: Absolutely, in fact, if done so, one can have a happy and successful career. Most people, especially the younger generation often complain about their job. The primary reason is that they are doing something that they don't love but is the conventional career choice. If we like doing something, we will feel motivated every day to wake up and go to work. Because throughout the day, we will be indulging ourselves with something that already makes us happy. This will automatically increase our productivity and thus ensure success.

Question 4: If given a choice, would you learn something that you really like even if that doesn't make a good career option?

Answer: Most certainly yes. My choice of academics and professional aspirations are something that I am proud of and enjoy equally. I am happy with it. So I do not have to compulsorily seek to change my career and thus I would definitely choose to learn something that interests me. Even if that doesn't make a profitable business or cannot be turned into a profession, I am okay with it because learning something that I love will give me satisfaction and happiness.
