The IELTS test, also known as the International English Language Testing System, comes in two primary forms based on its functionality: Academic IELTS test and General Training IELTS test. The primary factors for both IELTS exam formats are comparable, with just little differences in the study guides.

The Academic IELTS test is generally required for those applying for higher education i.e. graduation or postgraduation or professional work registration like doctors, nurses, and teachers to settle abroad. On the other hand, the General Training IELTS exam is for those who are applying for non-academic training, work experience, or some immigration purposes in a foreign country.

The pattern of reading and writing test syllabi for these two types of IELTS test differ keeping the format the same. The listening test and speaking test for both versions are the same.

The General Interview section of the IELTS speaking test is the first section. During this section, the examiner will ask you a series of questions about your educational background, interests, and hobbies in addition to some information about your professional goals.

Make sure to prepare a general introduction of yourself during your IELTS preparation phase for this segment of the speaking test. This round takes about four to five minutes to complete before the more critical rounds that follow.

The next stage is called the cue card round which is also known as the IELTS speaking topics section. You would receive a cue card from the examiner for this round, which would have a random topic on it. You have two minutes allotted to you to discuss the assigned topic and deliver a speech on it. The examiner will give you one minute to prepare a mental synopsis of the speech you will be delivering on the assigned IELTS speaking topics.

The segment with follow-up questions is the last and subsequent round of the IELTS speaking test. The cue card topic or response in the IELTS speaking topics section will be the basis for a few questions the examiner will pose to you in this round. This round lasts roughly five to six minutes, and there should be six or seven questions.

In order to properly prepare for the IELTS speaking portion of the IELTS exam, a candidate must review all of the frequently used IELTS speaking topics and sincerely browse through all IELTS speaking questions and sample answers. It is essential to consistently take the IELTS sample test in order to perform well on the IELTS speaking test.

To understand the format and style of the IELTS speaking questions, you should also routinely take the IELTS practice test during your IELTS preparation. The primary objectives of the IELTS speaking test are to assess a candidate's fluency, power of articulation, lexical resources, and pronunciation. Therefore, it is important to focus on these aspects during your IELTS exam preparation to get the required band.

  • Name and occupation of the person
  • What is interesting about him/her
  • Why do you want to know more about him/her
  • Conclusion

Let’s have a look at some sample answers and follow-up questions on the above topic.

IELTS exam sample 1: Describe an interesting person that you have not met in person and would like to know more about

Name and occupation of the person

I have heard of a distinguished lady, Anita from Mumbai, who saves and takes care of abandoned dogs from the street and gives them all the necessities to lead a healthy life. She is one person whom I find interesting and would love to know about her.

What is interesting about him/her

I find her interesting because of her line of work and background. As far as I heard, she graduated from Delhi University with a distinction in Economics. During the initial phase of her career, she tried her hands on corporate life but soon realized her true calling. She had a habit of rescuing needy street dogs when she was a child. She used to bring them home, feed them nd then give them away at a nearby shelter. So it is very heartwarming to know that she engaged in this line of help when she grew up.

Why do you want to know more about him/her

If I get to know more about her, I would love to understand her driving force for this endearing work she is engaged in. I would also like to ask her about the initial struggles she faced when she started working for her shelter and her exact feelings when she successfully rescued the dogs. I would love to understand her mindset and source of strength for continuing such a noble line of work without any financial aid. I guess I would require a whole day with her to get to know her deeper and better and get inspired a little more.

Conclusion

In this materialistic world where money is the sole driving force for everyone, I was elated to learn about Ankit and her passionate story. Her story inspired me to believe in humanity and love for animals. If life gives me the opportunity to meet her ever, I would like to learn more about her and get an in-depth idea of her work and life as the owner of the shelter that saves the lives of thousands of strays.

IELTS exam sample 2: Describe an interesting person that you have not met in person and would like to know more about

Name and occupation of the person

I have recently started watching Korean dramas and there is one actor who managed to grab my attention. His name is Cha Eun Woo and he is an actor, singer, and entrepreneur. I loved a few of his series and liked his acting prowess so I dug deeper into his background and found him as interesting as his series.

What is interesting about him/her

As I went over his biography, I came to know about his superlative educational background. He has been a top scorer in most of his college and school exams and has an IQ much higher than any average person. Not only is he a gifted actor with charismatic good looks, but he is also an active member of the famous boy band “Astro” where he is one of the vocalists and dancers. The list doesn’t stop there. During an interview, Cha Eun Woo spoke in fluent English which is very uncommon among South Korean actors. So to sum it up, Cha Eun Woo is an actor, dancer, businessman, singer, and a great human being who is rarely involved in any controversies.

Why do you want to know more about him/her

If I get the chance to know more about Eun Woo, I would love to know more about his college days when he was merely a student. I would also like to know a bit more about his transition from student to singer and then to an actor. It would be endearing to know about the hardships he faced while entering the acting world, which would make his existence more believable to me. In a way, I would like to know everything that I don’t know so as to understand his personality a little better.

Conclusion

Even from his interviews, Cha Eun Woo comes across as a very timid and shy person with the smile of an angel. He is one of the most sought-after young K-Drama actors on social media and his popularity has always been on the rise. It would be nice to get to know a little more about this electrifying actor and his personality.

IELTS speaking questions  - Follow-up question

What makes a person interesting to others?

Answer: The reasons for finding an individual interesting or not, depend on the personality of the other person. Like for example, I find intelligent people interesting. I also tend to become curious about the different occupations of others. Anything endearing in a person is attractive to me. When I see an individual with those qualities that are lacking in my personality, I start growing a fondness towards them. These are the few reasons that attract me to others and make me develop an interest in them.

Do you think people tend to define others by their appearances?

Answer: Absolutely. It is an unspoken rule amongst everyone to judge a person on the abscess of their appearance. Thus we tend to give extra effort while getting ready for any special occasions in order to give out a good first impression. Although I agree it is not correct to judge a book by its cover, it is the general norm in our society to define others by their appearances. But I try to avoid such rules of society while meeting new people and engaging in conversation with them to understand their personalities before looking at their attire.

How differently do you approach someone you know and someone you want to know?

Answer: When I approach a person known to me, I try to engage in casual conversation with them depending on their taste, habits, and personalities. But while approaching people I intend to know, I tend to use a different strategy. I would be on my best behavior in order to impress them. Then I would try to communicate with them with utter modesty and grace so that they feel comfortable to communicate back. This is how I would use conversational ice-breakers to approach an unknown but interesting person.
