Describe a person who you are happy to know :  IELTS exam Cue Card

One of the most difficult parts of the IELTS exam is the speaking test when your ability to communicate, express yourself, and be spontaneous is assessed. The challenges of the speaking test here are not your vocabulary or command over English, but to instantly think of the answer to the topic of the IELTS speaking test. There are three sections to the IELTS speaking exam. The first requires you to introduce yourself and briefly discuss your background. The most important part of the IELTS speaking test is the cue card round, where you have to deliver a two-minute monologue on a randomly selected topic provided by the examiner. This part of the IELTS speaking test is where you need to make yourself ready by practicing for as many IELTS speaking topics as possible during your IELTS preparation. The last section of the speaking test is the "follow-up questions" round, in which you will be asked questions by the examiner based on the information you provided in your response. The more you go through IELTS sample test questions, the more you will understand the nature of the follow-up questions of the IELTS speaking test. By the end of your IELTS exam preparation, you will be able to gauge the types of anticipated follow-up questions for each of the IELTS speaking questions.

All in all, there is no substitute for going through enough IELTS exam sample papers and attempting the IELTS practice test. This will be your gateway to achieving a soaring score on your IELTS test.

IELTS sample test topicDescribe a person who you are happy to know

This topic of the IELTS speaking test is comparatively easier to approach since you can instantly think of your favorite person or a person who makes a difference in your life. You do not have to think about the points explicitly as you already know the person, their traits, and the reason you like them. You just have to make the flow in your mind about the sequence of the points.

  • Start by introducing the person, explaining who they are and how you know them.
  • Talk through the time you met the person and how you met them.
  • Slowly transition into what they have taught you or how they have helped you in your life.
  • This will automatically take the flow of the answer to the section where you can speak about why the person is important to you and why you are happy to know them.
  • That's it, you are almost there. Now you have to ensure to summarize the entire answer in a sentence or two to make an impactful conclusion.

Now let's read a few IELTS sample test answers to the topic “Describe a person who you are happy to know.”

IELTS speaking questions sample 1 : Describe a person who you are happy to know

Introduce the person:

A person in my life whom I am glad to know is one of my neighbors, Mrs. Maitra. She is not only my neighbor, but my mentor, and like a mother figure to me.

When and how did you meet the person?

Because she has been my neighbor, I have known her since childhood. However, till the time I was six or seven years old, I didn't know her well enough. Our interactions were limited to the time when we visited each other's house for occasions and I remember she used to fondly pull my cheeks every time we bumped in the streets. It was the time when I was in third grade when my mother requested Mrs. Maitra to teach me mathematics and she gladly agreed. She was a mathematics teacher by profession and gave tuition to children. Since then I visited her house every evening with my mathematics books and learned Mathematics from her.

What has been the person's impact on your life?

As I started learning from her, she made me fall in love with the subject. While I was in seventh or eighth grade, while my friends used to struggle to memorize the formulae and theorems, she made me derive those without memorizing by making me explain the reason and steps behind every formula and theorem. As I grew up, right from academics, extracurriculars, and any decision-making, Mrs. Maitra has been my go-to person. Not only academics, she taught me how to play chess and encouraged me to learn it professionally. In fact, whenever I feel myself getting stuck in any situation, even now I run up to her. She sits me down, talks to me, and gives the correct advice which sorts my mind.

Why are you happy to know the person?

I feel whatever I am today, a lot of it has been shaped by her. Apart from my parents, she has had the most striking impact on my life. I look up to her and always strive to be half as good as her. As cliche as it sounds, but my life wouldn't have been the same without her presence in it.

Conclusion:

Even now I visit her house regularly since her presence brings positivity to my life. I am grateful for her and my love and respect for her will always be the same.

IELTS speaking questions sample 2 : Describe a person who you are happy to know

Introduce the person:

I had never expected that my corporate journey would make me meet someone whom I will value as my mentor throughout my life. I am more than glad that I know Mr. Sharma, who was my first team lead.

When and how did you meet the person?

After completing my undergraduate studies, I joined a company, which was my first corporate experience. After the training was done, our batch was handed over to the Operations Team, ready to be on the floor. That was the time I met Mr. Sharma was happened to be the lead of the team I was assigned to.

What has been the person's impact on your life?

Goes without saying that I learned everything required for flourishing at work from him. From the technicalities of handling projects to dealing with clients, and even addressing challenges at work. However, that is not the only contribution that he has made to my life. He is the one from whom I learned about financial awareness and investment strategies for wealth creation. One day, I was randomly talking about my monthly investment schemes, when the topic of the stock market came up. Mr. Sharma revealed that he was a regular investor and had a good grasp on the nuances of technical analysis of the market. I showed my interest in learning from him, and there began our journey. Over the course of time, he patiently taught me everything about investment and stocks, from reading and analyzing financials of companies to candlestick patterns and chart analysis, he ensured that I had knowledge of everything related to it. Almost every day after work and even during the weekends, he made time for me, either by meeting in person or by discussing in Zoom meetings.

Why are you happy to know the person?

Financial awareness is a basic life skill that I feel everyone should have irrespective of their profession and thus, I am glad that I have Mr. Sharma in my life, who was there to teach me that and guide me even now whenever I have any doubts. I had always heard about corporate being a competitive arena, where making friends is difficult, but Mr. Sharma and his selfless dedication to my learning and enhancement proved my notion wrong.

Conclusion:

He is one of the rare gems in my life. Outside my family and close group of friends, he is someone for whom I will always have a lot of respect and admiration.

IELTS speaking test- Follow-up questions segment

Question 1: What are the virtues required to grow any relationship?

Answer: Mutual understanding, respect, and space are required for any sort of relationship. Be it between parents and child, spouses, siblings, friends, colleagues, or teacher-students. One should try to understand the other person's point of view, respect their opinions and choices, and accept that two people can be right at the same time depending on their perspectives. One should also keep in mind the boundaries and give the other person space without making them feel burdened with unrealistic expectations.

Question 2: Do you think your happiness should depend on someone else's efforts toward you?

Answer: Personally, I don't believe that. While I am lucky and glad I have my family, friends, and mentors, I do not like to burden them with my expectations. I feel that happiness should come from a genuine place of gratefulness for having them in my life and not be steered by them keeping up to my expectations. This is a little unfair to them as well since nobody is liable for putting effort according to my acceptable standards.

Question 3: What are your opinions on having fights with someone close in your life?

Answer: Fights can be natural and often there can be disagreements. However, one should not cross the lines of being civil or hurting someone intentionally. I believe that a six can look like a nine if viewed from the other side. So it is not important to always have the same opinion. However, it is also not true that the other person has to be wrong to make us right. It is healthy to disagree or have an argument as long as we are carefully choosing our words and being civil without insulting the other person.

Question 4: Do you consider thinking about the impact it might have on any person near you who is important to you while making any decisions for yourselves?

Answer: We are a social animal and always have to consider circumstances and the changes it will bring to the people around us by our decisions. For example, for studying abroad I had to think and evaluate how my parents were going to stay without me, and whether they would face any problem or not. Not only serious decisions, but it might also be a trivial decision as well. If I don't feel like working and want to take a day off from work. However, I know that this can burden a colleague of mine with twice as much work because we have a project to deliver in a couple of days, I would rather not take the leave if I do not have an emergency.
