If your command of the English language is solid, you will perform significantly better on the IELTS speaking portion of the IELTS exam. Cue Card and Follow-Up Questions are the two sections that make up the IELTS speaking test. Not only should you be ready for the commonly asked IELTS speaking topics in the Cue Card phase, but you should also be ready for any follow-up questions that might be thrown at you in the IELTS speaking test or follow-up questions component.

There are two timed sections in the IELTS speaking exam. During the Cue Card section, you will be given one of the IELTS speaking questions, and you will have three minutes to talk about it. During those three minutes, you have one minute to think through and prepare your answer; the other two are dedicated to providing the answer. If you want to perform well in this section, you must become accustomed to answering IELTS speaking questions in the precise manner that the test is given.

"Describe a person who inspired you to do something interesting" is a frequently asked IELTS exam sample question. We have developed a solution to aid you with your IELTS preparation.  You can use this blog to prepare for the speaking portion of the IELTS practice test since it will teach you the correct way to formulate your responses. The more you stress this during your IELTS exam preparation, the more confident your response will be. Your speeches may touch on your opinions, current affairs, personal experiences, or any other seemingly unconnected issue.

Practicing the IELTS sample test on a variety of IELTS speaking topics is the best way to make sure you are prepared for every question that may be asked during your speaking exam. When answering the question, "Describe a person who inspired you to do something interesting," you must be honest about a person who inspired you to do something. Now let's look at the different answers to the speaking questions.

IELTS speaking question sample topic:

Describe a person who inspired you to do something interesting

To answer the question "Describe a person who inspired you to do something interesting," let's first break it up into smaller chunks to see what may be covered.

  • Introduction: Introduce the person first.
  • What did the person inspire you to do: Introduce what he/she inspired you to do.
  • Why did the person inspire you to do it: What exactly did the person say or do or any behavior you liked that inspired you to do it?
  • How did you follow the person and did it: While doing the work, how did you follow the person and did you take his/her advice?
  • Conclusion: Conclude by summarizing the answer in a nutshell.

IELTS exam sample Answer 1:

Introduction:

I consider my mother as my inspiration and often embed qualities and things to do that I see her doing.

What did the person inspire you to do:

My mother inspired me to spend my birthday in an old-age home every year and donate whatever I can to make their lives a little better.

Why did the person inspire you to do it:

I have always seen my mother as someone who is giving towards everyone and I have tried to be like her. One thing that always made me happy was that we celebrated her birthday every year at an old age home near our house with elderly people. My mother is a frequent visitor there and donates necessities and required money for their care. However, every year on her birthday, she makes sure that it is a ritual and she takes me and my sister along with her. That inspired me to follow the same ritual on my birthday. To be able to do something for others is a great virtue and I have learned to spread happiness which I have learned from her.

How did you follow the person and did it:

I have followed my mother and her ideologies so I picked up everything that she does and continue doing the same on my birthday. I buy sweets, chocolates, and snack items for everyone at the old-age home, new clothes for them, and donate money to the owner. Also, apart from the materialistic thing, my mother taught me to always spend time with them and show affection which I do. I sit with them for the entire afternoon, hear their stories, play Ludo and cards with them. My mother accompanies me and I can definitely see the pride in her.

Conclusion:

Spending time with the elderly people and learning from their experiences is something interesting for me and I have learned that from my mother. I will be always thankful to her for showing me this side of life.

IELTS exam sample Answer 2:

Introduction:

One person who has inspired me to do a lot of things is my maternal aunt and I always strive to be in her company to learn something new.

What did the person inspire you to do:

One of the most significant things that she inspired me to do was gardening. I was so inspired to try it out, that I ended up falling in love with the activity and nowadays regularly pursue it.

Why did the person inspire you to do it:

Whenever I visited her house and went to the terrace I was amazed at the colorful beauty. There were various plants in the ports that grew various vegetables and flowers. I had never seen so many diverse flowers in the same place. With time, I visited her more often to spend time in her terrace garden and one day I was luckily there at a time when she was gardening. I got the opportunity to watch her closely. I found her to be extremely patient and caring toward her plants and spent considerable time nurturing each one of them. She knew exactly how to mix the mud with organic fertilizers, how many leaves to cut off, and how much water to give to each plant. Her dedication, precisely, and love for gardening inspired me and I realized to build something beautiful, we must spend enough time on it.

How did you follow the person and did it:

Whatever I learned about gardening, the credit goes to her. I observed her taking care of her plants and ultimately decided to follow in her footsteps. I didn't want to risk anything so I arranged for all the instruments and materials that she used while I started off and during the first few days when I was planting the seeds, I called her to my house so that I could do it in front of her.

Conclusion:

Now when I walk through my garden, I can only think of my aunty and how she paved the way for me to pursue my hobby.

IELTS test next step: Follow up questions

In the speaking test, the IELTS test Cue Card section is followed by the IELTS test follow-up questions section. You are going to be given additional questions based on the response you gave in the Cue Card section of the IELTS speaking test. The only distinction is that there won't be any preparation time allowed and the follow-up questions will likewise center on your IELTS speaking topic.

The questions demand your full attention, and you must answer them immediately. To thrive in this part, you'll need to have an amazing personality, high conversational skills, fast thinking, and confidence. Here are some questions about the subject "Describe a person who inspired you to do something interesting." A few potential responses to some of the follow-up questions regarding the speaking test topic are listed below.

IELTS test: Follow up questions

Question 1: What is that one thing that you do that you want to inspire anyone younger about?

Answer: I do Yoga every morning and it has not only helped me with physical fitness but also made me a lot calmer, helped me concentrate more, and feel a lot fresher. I want to inspire young people, even if that is only one person to do Yoga. With her constant hustle and stressful life, it is very important for young people to take care of their minds and bodies.

Question 2: How important is it for you to take inspiration from others?

Answer: To constantly grow as human beings, we need to be around people who inspire and uplift us. I personally look around myself to see and try to embed all the good qualities of people around me. This is something that has helped me make myself better and learn newer skills and habits.

Question 3: Do you think celebrities nowadays inspire children?

Answer: Yes and to a huge extent. Starting from the clothes and shoes they wear to the way they behave in public and in movies, if they are movie stars, children tend to copy them as role models. Even the products of the brands they endorse are bought by kids. Thus, any public figure has a huge responsibility in their conduct as they can inspire the youth of the country to follow in their footsteps.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the speaking portion of the IELTS test simple for people who speak English well?

In response, that is accurate. If you feel comfortable speaking English and have a good grasp of the language, you might find the IELTS speaking test to be relatively straightforward. Your overall IELTS exam preparation would be much easier, even though you would still need to take the IELTS practice test, get comfortable with the format, and understand the topics covered in speaking. That being said, there's no need to panic if you feel that your English is not up to par. You can practice responding to IELTS speaking topics, and review sample IELTS exam sample papers, and with a methodical approach to IELTS preparation, you'll excel in it.

How long does the IELTS speaking test take in total?

The IELTS speaking exam takes 11–14 minutes to finish for each candidate. The introduction interview portion takes approximately 3–4 minutes, followed by the cue card phase in section two, which also takes approximately 4–5 minutes, and the IELTS speaking questions or follow-up questions section in section three, which also takes approximately 4–5 minutes.

What common errors do people make when speaking on the IELTS test?

Anxiety, sleep deprivation, relying on prepared answers, ignoring the question, speaking too little, and mispronouncing words are common mistakes made when speaking on the IELTS test. Additionally, using colloquial language, like fixed phrases, could lead the examiner to believe that you are providing responses that you have memorized.
