Cue Card 2024: Sample 1

What was the advertisement for:

Commercial clips or advertisements are one of the most integral parts of brand promotion in the current day and age. Over the years the quality of advertisements in terms of concept and cinematography has evolved a lot. I have watched several advertisements over the years which have impacted me a lot. One such advertisement is for an Indian spice brand which had a very unique but thoughtful concept.

Describe the advertisement:

The advertisement starts with a child, Chintu, getting a telephone call over the land phone from his friend. They were talking about some new game and suddenly the child heard his friend’s mother calling him for lunch. He instantly asked his friend about the menu for lunch at their house, to which he replied that they were having biriyani. He also asked Chintu whether he wanted to come over for lunch at his place to which Chintu’s eyes sparkled with excitement. He quickly pranced out of his house and went to his friend for a biriyani treat. On reaching his house, viewers get to understand that Chintu’s friend is “Muslim” by religion but Chintu is “Hindu”. Both the children, along with the family, have a fulfilling lunch cooked with the spices of the Indian brand, and Chintu leaves for home with a happy heart. On reaching home, Chintu smells a delicious recipe being served for lunch at his house, which is prepared with the same brand of spice. He enjoys the food at his home as well and the commercial ends with a message. It says spices don’t distinguish between religions, just like the kids, so shouldn’t others.

What part of the ad interested you:

The entire advertisement was very thoughtfully made with the ultimate aim of imparting a social message to the viewers. It was very elegantly shown how the two cultural barriers are non-existent to the innocent minds of the children. The concept of the ad fully justified its tagline and just like Chintu, I had a huge smile on my face at the end of the commercial. It was refreshing to see spices and food bringing two different cultures together in such a graceful way. I was impressed by the originality of the concept and the thought of the creator of the advertisement.

Conclusion :

Commercials are not only for brand promotions, but they can impart wisdom in the minds of the viewers. Thus, when it is used in a unique and thought-provoking way, viewers like me embrace it with open arms, and the concept of the ad gets engraved in our minds.

Cue Card 2024: Sample 2

What was the advertisement for:

About three years ago, I heard from a friend of mine about the first advertisement which won a National Award. I was intrigued as to what the concept of the ad was and quickly searched for it over the internet. I was pleasantly surprised to see that the advertisement was from Unilever to promote water conservation. It was very refreshing to see a huge brand like Unilever trying its best to promote an environmental cause with such a unique concept.

Describe the advertisement:

The ad starts with a woman speaking in the background saying “One day, someone left a shower in their village”.  Viewers could see a glass cubicle shower positioned in the middle of a village in Rajasthan, India. A villager came and examined the shower. He turned it on by mistake and when the cold water started flowing in the middle of the hot desert, the person started drinking it with his bare hands. He breathed a sign of relief after quenching his thirst. After that people from all over the village started lining up in front of the shower, just to drink a little water or fill their utensils with it so that they could preserve it. The camera panned out and the lady in the background said, “Within this time, the thirst of an entire village was quenched, but the shower of a person from the city was still incomplete. Save water, take shorter showers.”. Then a message popped on the screen from Unilever stating the importance of conserving water.

What part of the ad interested you:

After watching the commercial, the first thought that cropped into my mind was that it was nice to see someone speaking about water conservation on a public platform. I was genuinely impressed by the concept and tagline of the commercial and thought the award was well deserved. The last credits of the advertisement stated that the water used in the commercial was recycled and distributed among the villagers of Rajasthan, which was the cherry on the cake for me. I am certain that this commercial compelled a lot of its viewers to think about and implement the concepts to conserve water.

Conclusion :

It is advertisements like these that help people think about environment conservation and concepts like these manage to grab the attention of the masses. Thus I was very inspired by this ad and would remember it for a very long time.

IELTS speaking test - Follow-up question

What is the most attractive part of an advertisement according to you?

Answer: In my opinion, the most attractive part of an advertisement is its concept and message. The message an advertisement molds within its tagline or the concept of the commercial is the most crucial part of crafting it. Hence, if an ad is well made with a good concept and theme, I prefer not to skip it and appreciate the effort of the sponsor and the content creator.

Do you think advertisements have evolved over the years?

Answer: Yes. I have been an avid advertisement buff since my childhood. I have watched over hundreds of commercials over the years and their evolution has impressed me several times. In the old days, advertisements were meant just to promote an item, without a lot of thinking or any storyline whatsoever. But now, not only has the content of the commercials changed for the better, but the viewer’s mentality and inclinations have changed as well. Thus the concept of ads and their quality has evolved along with the preferences of viewers.

What do you think is the main aim of an advertisement?

Answer: As far as my understanding goes, a brand's advertisements are meant to promote it among common people and increase its reachability. Advertisements are created to attract more customers and make them aware of the new variations or offers that the brand is promoting. The brand’s revenue can increase after a very attractive advertisement, hence several extra hours of effort and money are devoted to building great commercials.
