The IELTS speaking test is one of the toughest sections of the IELTS exam where your communication, opinion, and spontaneity are evaluated. The speaking test has 3 segments, where first you will have to introduce yourself and give your brief background. This is the time to ease yourself into the speaking test scenario. We advise you to include a paragraph of your introduction in your everyday IELTS preparation.

Then comes the most crucial segment of the IELTS speaking test which is the cue card round. Goes without saying that this is the trickiest segment, where you will have to give your monologue of 2 minutes on a random topic given to you by the examiner. To ensure you perform your best, it is important to practice monologues on various IELTS speaking topics. As you get habituated with how to frame your answers with numerous IELTS speaking questions, you will not only be confident but will also sharpen your reflex to articulate your thoughts.

The final segment will be the follow-up questions round, where the examiner will ask you questions based on the content of your answer. This part of the IELTS speaking test will evaluate your response time and presence of mind.

Let's now learn how to tackle the monologue and the follow-up questions of the speaking test with one of the sample IELTS speaking topics. This will give you a better idea of how to frame the answers and the types of follow-up questions that you can expect, making your IELTS preparation worth a soaring score.

IELTS sample test topic:

Describe a favorite place in your house where you can relax

Let's first divide the topic into smaller segments so that it is easier for you to frame the answer. You can do the same before the monologue round of the speaking test as you will get 1 minute to prepare your answer. This topic "Describe a favorite place in your house where you can relax" can be bifurcated into segments like introduction, when do you spend time in this place, why do you feel relaxed in this place, with whom do you like to spend time in this place, and a conclusion to smoothly wrap the answer. Now, let's see what content we can put in these sections.

In the introduction part, you will have to introduce the place and describe it. Explain what you do in this place.

Next will be a time of the day or night when you spend your time in that place. You can also talk about certain emotions like when you feel stressed you like to sit there to relax.

Then will come, Why do you feel relaxed in this place, where you have to mention the reasons and the way you feel relaxed connecting it to the vibe, feel, or activity that you do in the place.

After that, you can talk about who you like to spend time in that place and mention the reason for it. If you like spending time alone, you can mention that as well.

In conclusion, you can sum up the answer in a couple of sentences ending it with a positive note on the vibe and reason why this place is special for you.

IELTS speaking questions sample 1:

Describe a favourite place in your house where you can relax.

Introduction:

The living room in my house is one of the comforting places in my opinion where relaxing and spending time is something that I look forward to. I sit on my L-shaped couch, throw on a comfortable duvet, and watch TV. This makes me relaxed and takes all my stress away.

When do you spend time in this place:

After a long day, especially after dinner is completed, I make myself comfortable there. This not only makes me feel relaxed but also makes my breathing calm, preparing me for a good night's sleep.

Why do you feel relaxed in this place:

The vibe of the place is soothing, to say the least. I like to keep the lighting low, with only one yellow night bulb glowing. I keep the balcony door open to allow the chilled breeze. As poetic does it sounds, the curtains blowing in the wind give me a sense of freedom. I have the fondest memories of my childhood, playing with my grandparents. That runs in my subconscious, and that is also a reason this place is so comforting for me.

With whom do you like to spend time in this place:

This is usually my 'me-time.' After dinner, my parents usually retire to bed and I spend the time alone. Sometimes if a late-night football match is going on, my father joins me.

Conclusion:

This place is not only relaxing for me but also holds a special place in my heart. No matter how tiring or a difficult day I have, I know I have my trusty couch in the living room to make the ending of the day better.

IELTS speaking questions sample 2:

Describe a favorite place in your house where you can relax.

Introduction:

The moment I hear the word relax, I can only think of one place at my house, that is the terrace. The place is airy, overlooks the city skyline, and is the home for my plants. I have built my own mini-garden there with small plants in pots and every day I spend an hour watering the plants.

When do you spend time in this place:

As soon as I wake up, the first thing I do is go to the terrace and feel the morning breeze. It's usually quiet in the morning and I feel the calmness which gives me the boost to kick-start my day with positivity.

Why do you feel relaxed in this place:

This place is relaxing for me as I get to spend time with my plants. Also, just staring into the far-away buildings gives me a weird sense of calmness. It is almost like hypnosis. During my IELTS exam preparation, I used to walk on the terrace after watering the plants and practice giving answers to random IELTS speaking topics.

With whom do you like to spend time in this place:

Most days I go to the terrace alone, however, sometimes, my cousin joins me. We like spending time together, sharing life updates, and generally discussing random topics.

Conclusion:

My terrace for me is my little home with my family of plants. Their company makes this place relaxing for me, giving me a sense of self and belonging.

IELTS speaking questions sample 3:

Describe a favorite place in your house where you can relax.

Introduction:

My study room is one place in my house that is very close to me. I have my collection of story books and there is nothing more relaxing for me than spending my time there.

When do you spend time in this place:

As soon as I am home, most of my time is spent in my study room. I look forward to coming home and going to my study room to dump myself in my ergonomic chair.

Why do you feel relaxed in this place:

The smell of books is my absolute favorite. As soon as I enter the room, the smell hits me and gives me the much-needed calm. I have all the books arranged on a shelf which covers 90% of one of the walls. I like to pick up a random book, based on my mood, and start reading it. In that moment, I am transcended to another parallel universe which the author paints with their creativity.

With whom do you like to spend time in this place:

A lot of the time, my mother accompanies me and we have our own sweet time. The habit of reading is something that I have gotten from her and thus, discussing random stories with her fills my heart with joy.

Conclusion:

My study room is the center of my universe. I have read that paper has more patience than people, and this place filled with books is my ultimate stress buster.

IELTS speaking test- Follow-up questions segment

Now that we have gone through the sample answers, let's take a few examples of the follow-up questions of the speaking test based on the topic of Describe a favorite place in your house where you can relax.

IELTS speaking test: Follow-up Questions:

Question 1: Given the fast-paced life that people are leading, do you think taking time off from work or studies is needed for our mental well-being?

Answer: I completely believe that taking time off from work or studies is very important. My father always tells me that if I do not take time off at a time that suits me the best, the body and mind will give up and take time off being sick at a time that might not suit me the best. This is true in my opinion, and giving our mind and body the time to recover without any pressure from work or studies is important for better productivity and health.

Question 2: What according to you is the best way to relax?

Answer: For me, silence and light music are the best ways to relax. I like to be all by myself with my eyes closed. Also, traveling is something that I enjoy and mountains give me a lot of peace. So whenever I am on a trip, be it a solo trip, or a trip with friends or family, I feel de-stressed.

Question 3: Do you think being stressed is the cause of a lot of health disorders that people are having nowadays?

Answer: Absolutely, in fact, it is medically and scientifically proven. Be it diabetes, high blood pressure, sinus, heart disorders, or PCOS in women, it all stems from the stressful life that we are leading. It is very important to keep our mental health at the optimal level so that our body can be in sync with it and be healthy as well.
