IELTS Writing: Assessment criteria

Each of the four factors used to evaluate the essay section of the writing exam contributes one-fourth i.e. 25% of the overall IELTS writing band score. The contributing elements are as follows:

  • Task Achievement / Task Response: This section evaluates your knowledge of the prescribed topic, your comprehension of the key arguments presented in your response, and your accuracy in understanding the issue. Make sure your essay is at least 250 words long and that you have enough time within the given 40 minutes to proofread it.
  • Coherence and Cohesion: Coherence refers to the way concepts make sense. You must arrange your ideas clearly and write understandably to produce cohesive writing. Cohesion is the appropriate method of tying various literary elements together using linking words like “however”, “moreover”, “nevertheless” etc. Make sure you employ lots of linking words in your writing and avoid word redundancy.
  • Lexical Resource: The examiner would evaluate your work for correctness, vocabulary depth, spelling errors, and effective word choice and usage to determine this point. Making effective use of a large vocabulary might help you score higher on this criterion.
  • Grammatical Accuracy and Range: This section evaluates your use of correct language, sentence construction, and punctuation. To ace this part, you should employ a wide variety of grammar and use your vocabulary accurately.

IELTS writing test: List of Linking words

Linking words are employed to strengthen the logical appeal and fluidity of a piece of writing by creating connections between ideas, phrases, and paragraphs. During essay writing, we frequently lack the vocabulary of linking words since we don't use them frequently in everyday speech. Thus we have listed a few linking words broken into categories for your reference.

Examples: Used before elaborating on an example

  • For example
  • For instance
  • Such as
  • To illustrate

Emphasis: To emphasize or give importance to a particular idea

  • Indeed
  • In fact
  • Certainly
  • Definitely
  • Undoubtedly

Sequence: To incorporate sequencing in your essay

  • First / Firstly
  • Second / Secondly
  • Next
  • Then
  • Finally

Clarification: To clarify the thought behind an idea in your essay

  • In other words
  • To put it simply
  • That is to say

IELTS writing task 2 topics with answers

While attempting an Opinion essay you should be fully inclined to one side of the topic i.e. either agree or disagree. You also need to follow the below structure diligently.

Introduction: Paraphrase the given information and state your stance on the topic (agree/disagree). Make your statement rigid enough to convince the examiner.

Main Body: The main body should consist of at least 2 paragraphs.

  • Paragraph 1: Initiate with the topic sentence and then add 2 pointers to support your stance. Make sure to add enough examples and explanations.
  • Paragraph 2: You can add one or two pointers to support your perspective on the topic and use a few more instances to justify them.
  • Paragraph 3(optional): You can add statements related to opponent views and your outlooks refuting those statements.

Conclusion: Restate your point of view and give the essay a satisfying closure.

Now let's have a look at the probable answers to one such IELTS essay topic which is “Big salary is much more important than job satisfaction. Do you agree or disagree?”. It is an Opinion Essay and below we have listed the answers for bands 6, 7, and 9.

IELTS writing band score 6

It is often believed that a high-earning job is more important than job satisfaction. I completely disagree with the statement and would like to talk about the reasons in this essay.

I think a satisfing job is much more important than the salary earned from it. People can earn less and be happy with a comfortable job than getting tensed at a high-paying job. Getting paid a big salary should not be the motivation behind a job. Job satisfaction comes from the happiness of being able to do what interests us. For example, if a person has a high-paying job, but the work is not interesting to them, then it is normal for them to get bored or tensed while doing the job which will ultimately cause problems to their mental and physical health.

However, if we do a job that interests us, we would have the urge to do it over and over and the work load will never burden us. At the end of the day, only earning money from work will not be enough if we are compromising our health and inner peace. For instance, there have been several examples of artists who quit their high-paying job to follow their dream and become an artist. One such example is John Grisham who quit his job as a successful lawer to become a novelist.

In conclusion, I believe that being happy and satisfied at a job is much more important than its financial outcome to get the desired outcome from work. That is why, for me job satisfaction is much more important than a big salary.

Notes on the above answer:

  • There are incorrect tenses or nouns, which indicate Grammatical faults. Punctuation errors are observed, which lower your Accuracy score.
  • The There are spelling mistakes or a deficiency of Lexical Resources.
  • The essay lacks Coherence because words like "job," "important," "high-paying," "interest," and "example" are repeated too often. The essay's overall Cohesion is impacted when connecting words like "However" and "Furthermore" are used less frequently.

There's a common belief that a well-paying job is more important than having a fulfilling career. I'll go over my reasons for believing the assumption to be false in this article. The importance of job fulfillment above pay is something I really believe in.

Firstly, being satisfied with one’s professional responsibilities motivates an employee to work harder and be innovative. That is the ultimate outcome expected of a worker from a particular job. If an individual is unhappy with the task they have been allocated, then no matter how much money they are offered, that person is bound to be unhappy and dissatisfied at the end of the day. For example, several students choose the line of research and study after graduation without bothering about a hefty annual package. That is because they prioritize their interest in the field of science more than the financial benefits of a corporate job.

Furthermore, after earning a significantly large salary, the goal of an individual is to enjoy life and be content. However, along with a lucrative salary comes a bundle of heavy duty responsibilities which might not align with the interests of an associate. Nevertheless, people continue with their work even if the outcome is disastisfactory, only to justify their paychecks and designations. This might adversely affect one’s mental and physical health. Thus it is important to select the gig that draws one’s interest, rather than chasing after high remunerasions. For instance, Michael Crichton, author of “Jurrasic Park”,  earned an MD from Harward, but chose to be an author rather than a doctor, because of the satisfaction he got from the art of writing.

In conclusion, I completely disagree with the aforementioned statement and support a satisfactory line of work, irrespective of its financial perks. It is extremely important for me to be happy rather than being rich.

Notes on the above answer:

  • The above answer represent Grammatical mistakes like wrong tenses or nouns.
  • The unnecessarily long sentences which affect the clarity of thought and decrease Coherence.
  • A few more variations of linking words could be incorporated, and words like “job”, and “work” have been repeated, which has decreased the overall score of Cohesion and Coherence.
  • Spelling errors or a lack of Lexical Resources.

IELTS writing band score 9

There's a common belief among people that a well-paying job is more important than having a fulfilling career. I strongly disagree with the assumption and would like to share my perspective in this essay.

Firstly, a motivated employee is more likely to be creative and diligent with their responsibilities when they are content with their career obligations. In the end, finance is an insignificant factor if someone is unhappy with their professional duties. Work satisfaction brings a level of peace in the minds of people which is irreplaceable by monetary benefits. An individual earns money to have a sufficient life, which is rendered meaningless if they are on the verge of depression due to their dissatisfactory jobs. For instance, several students ignore high-paid mundane careers and embrace the field of study and research after graduation, because of their inclination towards science over financial gains.

Moreover,  a person's objective is to be happy and enjoy life after receiving a notably big pay. But, a large compensation also comes with a ton of demanding tasks that might not be in line with an associate's interests. However, many keep working even when the results are unsatisfactory to justify their designation and remuneration as a result of which their physical and emotional health suffers. Therefore, it's crucial to choose a profession that interests you rather than aiming for a hefty salary. To illustrate, Michael Crichton, the author of "Jurrasic Park," received his MD at Harvard but decided against becoming a doctor because of his passion for writing.

To wrap up, I wholeheartedly disagree with the above statement and am in favor of a fulfilling line of work, regardless of the compensation that may accompany it. Rather than wealth, happiness is what matters most to me.
