Currently, Canada is amongst the most sought-after locations for overseas education, and many foreign students, particularly in the field of architecture, are aiming to pursue studies in this nation. Canada has several things to its credit when it comes to making it an ideal and favored place for students going abroad for their studies: its enriching culture, the quality education it offers, and the warm welcome. Indian students, too, are becoming increasingly interested in architecture and studying in Canada, because of its prestigious institutions and excellent job opportunities. Canada is highly recognized for carrying some of the world's most renowned institutions for architecture, with a very solid record of performance for churning out top professionals. Its great history of really good schools of architecture never stops improving and benchmarking with modern times and developments.

What is Architecture?: Canada

Architecture is an art, a science, and a business of building. Architects design homes, office towers, schools, and churches. They are creative people with a flair for design, social awareness, keen business sense, solid engineering skills, and knowledge of the law. The word "versatile" could have been coined to define Architects!

Today's Architect may practice alone or be part of a small, medium, or large firm. Some Architects are self-employed. Others may be on salary, as employees of government, real estate developers, or large corporations. "Clients" are the people who use the services of Architects. A client may be a family, a school board, a company, a housing authority, a government department, or a building contractor.

How to Become an Architect?

  • To be licensed as an architect in Canada, one has to go through a multi-step process that ensures the candidates are well-prepared for professional practice. Step one: obtain a professional degree in architecture—for example, a Bachelor of Architecture or a Master of Architecture—from a program accredited by the Canadian Architectural Certification Board. CACB accreditation is important, for it validates that the educational program meets the national standards.
  • The next step, after getting your degree, is to get practical experience through the Intern Architect Program (IAP), in which the candidates practice under the direct supervision of a licensed architect. This internship requires completion of about 3,720 hours across many aspects of architectural practice, such as design and project management.
  • After the internship, they have to get their educational qualifications certified by CACB, and then pass ExAC(Architectural Practice Examination), which is an exam testing comprehensive knowledge in the architectural field. From here, now fully licensed professionals can apply for licensure with the provincial architectural association in any location they prefer to work in.
  • Further, continuous learning is required, but one must have the knowledge and skill to apply continuous learning for a licensed architect to keep abreast of evolving industry practices. The CACB has an important role to play in all these processes, ensuring that each aspiring architect adheres to the educational and professional standards set to obtain a license to practice in Canada.
