Understanding the IELTS Exam

The IELTS exam assesses your English language proficiency across four crucial skills: reading, speaking, and writing. It is currently available in two modules namely the Academic and the General Training. Despite the difference in the format, all the tasks are designed to test similar abilities; however, the materials in the Academic version correspond to the university level, whereas the General Training reflects the readers’ practical experience in various spheres, including work and communities.

Deciding Between Academic and General Training IELTS

The format to use must also be chosen to allow you to achieve your goals to the maximum. It is for this reason that the candidate needs to contemplate his or her main purpose for doing the IELTS. If you are going to continue your education in a particular university, choose the Academic version of IELTS. For immigration or work-related purposes, one should go in for General Training IELTS.

Frequently Asked Questions

I am asking this question because I have a basic understanding of IELTS preparation and I would like to know the duration of preparation depending on the type of IELTS test.

In as much as I familiarised myself with the IELTS exam, I learned that the preparation time differs depending on the current level of mastery of the English language. This is because a beginner may take several months to prepare for the IELTS exam while a candidate with a good English background may not take much time. Choose an achievable timeline and set a plan that suits you best throughout the session.

Is it possible to write the IELTS online?

Today, the IELTS exam is not like an online exam or an examination that is conducted by one examiner for students who seek this facility. This means that you will have to visit a physical testing centre to take the IELTS examination.

For the IELTS examination how much does one have to pay?

IELTS fees also differ across the world. You should contact the specific test centre that you are planning to use to know the current charges for the IELTS exam.

I have always been wondering whether there is a standard passing score for the IELTS exam and if so, what it is.

The definition of what constitutes a ‘good’ IELTS score therefore depends on whatever requirement one is likely to meet whether it be university admission or immigration. Find out the particular band needed for a given function before you proceed with the IELTS preparation.

How many times can one take the IELTS exam?

The good news is that you are allowed to take the IELTS as many times as you wish depending on your scores. Still, it is important to note that one has to register and even pay for the exams each time they attempt to take them.
