IELTS Reading Band Score

The IELTS, an abbreviation for the International English Language Testing System is a substantial obstacle for many aspiring international students and professionals. The tasks can be daunting, especially the Reading section. But fear not! This no-nonsense approach to IELTS Reading Band Scores gives you a full analysis of what score you have got and what you need to do to get yourself that much closer to the band scores you truly deserve.

What is an IELTS Reading Band Score?

The IELTS Reading Band Score is your ability to read and understand written English. It has a rating of 1 being limited understanding; and 9 being expert user. This score is important because it directly affects your overall IELTS test result and whether you’ll be allowed into universities and other professional programmes in other countries.

How is the IELTS Reading Band Score Calculated?

The calculation of your IELTS Reading Band Score involves a two-step process:

Step 1: Scoring Your Reading Test

The IELTS Reading test contains three full-length passages and a total of 40 questions. Every correct answer is worth one mark. There is no penalty for getting the wrong answer, so you should try all questions.

Step 2: How do we convert Raw Score to Band Score?

A pre-determined conversion table is then used to convert your raw score (number of correct answers) to a band score (1-9). It’s a table, not the public, but official IELTS resources will give you a rough idea of the relationship between the raw scores and the band scores.

Understanding the Raw Score to Band Score Conversion

Here's a glimpse into the raw score-to-band score conversion for the Reading section:

Raw ScoreBand Score (Approx.)

How is the Band Score Calculated in the General and Academic Sections of IELTS?

The IELTS test offers two variations: Academic and General Training. Both sections feature a Reading component, but the approach to band score calculation might differ slightly.

  • Academic Reading: At a glance, this section is for students who want to apply to universities abroad. The passages tend to be more complex and academic and are from scholarly journals and textbooks. In the Reading section, and General Training in particular, a given band score is usually secured with a greater raw score (that is, achieving a higher number of answers correct), compared to Academic Reading.
  • General Training Reading: This section is targeted towards people who are migrating or working remotely abroad. However, the passages are more practical and deal with ordinary situations. So, for the same band score, you need a lower raw score in General Training Reading than you do in Academic Reading.

Tips to Enhance Your IELTS Reading Band Score

  • Extensive Reading: Reading in English needs to be truly multi-dimensional. There need to be newspapers, articles, novels and non-fiction books to immerse you in. It helps to improve your vocabulary and also improve your reading comprehension.
  • Practice Makes Perfect: Take official IELTS practice tests and resources from trusted sources. These materials tend to mirror the test type and level of difficulty of the actual test, helping you hone your test-taking skills.
  • Master Vocabulary Building: Daily learning new words will actively expand your vocabulary. Copy some flashcards, memorise a mnemonic device, or refer to some online resource to reinforce the concepts.
  • Skimming and Scanning Techniques: Practice skimming for general ideas within meaning and scanning for specific information in passages. These techniques master help you to go through long texts easily and find the important bits quickly.
  • Sharpen Your Time Management Skills: In the IELTS Reading, Time management is important. Complete practice tests under the given time limit so that you can answer all the questions properly.
  • Develop Active Reading Habits: Don't simply read passively. Mark important points; make notes; and write down questions that come up while you read. Actively engaging with the text helps you better understand and retain what you’ve read.
  • Practice Different Question Types: The IELTS Reading section has different question formats, like multiple choice, matching headings, identifying information and completing a summary. Study these various responses, and practise doing them well.
  • Pay Attention to Grammar and Sentence Structure: A good grasp or knowledge of grammar and sentence structure will allow you to decode complex passages.
  • Don't Be Afraid to Guess: In the Reading section, you will not get a penalty if you answer incorrectly. If I don't know an answer to the best of my knowledge, I make an educated guess to play it as an educated guess to maximise my score potential.
  • Review Your Mistakes: Find the mistakes from your practice test that you keep making. Look at areas that need improvement and come up with strategies that help you overcome those existing problems.

Conclusion: Your Gateway to Success

By getting to know your IELTS Reading Band Score, you have taken one step closer to getting your academic or professional goals abroad. If you’ve familiarised yourself with the scoring process, the minuscules that differ between General Training and Academic Reading and practised effective preparation strategies, you can drastically improve your score. Of course, then practise don’t fail me now, a balanced approach and a positive mind are all that you need to succeed in the IELTS Reading section. However, with dedication and proper tools, you have the potential to unlock your full potential and achieve the band score you want.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I work out the exact table of raw score to band score?

The official IELTS organisation does not make public the exact conversion table. Although there is a correlation, however, practice tests and resources from reputable sources give you an idea of the correlation.

Although I got a high score in the Reading section, for overall IELTS my score is below. What should I do?

If you are trying to strike a balance, work in your weaker segment (Listening, Writing or Speaking), so two scores can be as high as the other. Use practice materials and think about taking a special preparation course for your needs.

Is guessing in the Reading section, somehow … penalised?

There is no penalty for incorrect answers in the Reading section. Always go ahead and attempt all questions, even if you’re not sure. Try and guess educated to make the most of your score potential.

What should I spend time on in the Reading section?

The idealisation is to spend around 20 minutes on each passage. It allows enough read, understand, and answer related questions. Timed tests can be practised to develop the art of effective time management.

How can we make the best of the unfamiliar vocabulary in the Reading section?

Don’t let yourself become stuck by every unknown word. If there’s a sentence you are not able to understand, skim past it, and focus on understanding the more general topic. Sometimes you can still get the answer even if you know the exact definition of it.

The Reading section is considered long and overpowering. How can I stay focused?

Staying calm and strong enough to finish the test. Breathe and pace yourself so you don’t get overwhelmed. If you have any time left, use it to revise unanswered questions or double cheque you have selected the critical sections correctly.

What is the difference between paraphrasing and inference skills in the Reading section?

When we paraphrase, we look for synonyms, and reword things, of the information we’re looking for in the passage. Inference skills involve making conclusions about what will happen or has happened based on what you can see or infer in the passage, even if you’re not given the answer wording word for word.
