Welcome, DET aspirants!

If you are preparing to take the Duolingo English Test, it is important to know about its scoring. The DET aims to evaluate the English skills of each candidate in all fairness and with no bias.

In this blog, we will explain the scoring system so that you will know what to expect and how to prepare for it.

Bear with us to the last to learn every other aspect that will be significant in making you attain the score you wish.

Analyzing the DET scoring system

The maximum and minimum DET Scoring metrics Scales lie between 10 and 160 respectively with increasing subsequential addition of 5-point.

The scores indicate the general level of English language skills, which are aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

The following is the scoring system and its meaning:

  • 10-55: Beginner stage of learning the language (CEFR A1 A2)
  • 60-85: Intermediate English level, capable of conversing well (CEFR B1)
  • 90-115: High intermediate level degree of English language command (CEFR B2)
  • 120-160: Expert to Mastery level of English language ability (CEFR C1 -C2)

Section-wise Scoring

DET tests the four main components of English skills: reading, listening , speaking, and writing. Still, this part of the examination does not instill these skills separately. Rather, it tests the performance of several skills at the same time through integrated tasks.

Even though each question type impacts the final score of the test, the algorithm potentially controls the level of difficulty depending on how well the student is doing.

Individual and Integrated Subscores:

The scale gives both Individual Subscores and Integrated Subscores:

• Individual Subscores: This accounts for specific language skills such as reading, writing.

• Integrated Subscores: Most of these language skills are for use in a real situation encapsulated in these language skills. Integrative Subscores are averages of the relevant Individual Subscores.

Subscores:

Another interesting feature of the DET exam is that in addition to its 4 core English language competencies, there are also 4 subscores. These subscores are:

Literacy: Evaluates your ability to read and write effectively.

Comprehension: Assesses your ability to understand and interpret written and spoken English.

Production: Measures your ability to write coherently and speak clearly in English.

Conversation: Tests your capabilities to listen actively and responds appropriately in spoken English.

Scoring Criteria

The test scoring system focuses on different aspects to give a holistic picture of one’s proficiency in the language:

  1. Content: The relevance and accuracy of the answer given.

  2. Fluency: The ease and naturalness of the use of the English language.

  3. Pronunciation: The clarity and accuracy of spoken English.

  4. Grammar: The correct use of grammatical structures.

  5. Vocabulary: The appropriateness and the range of the words used.

  6. Punctuation: The use of marks in writing according to accepted norms.

  7. Coherence and Cohesion: The organization and connection of thoughts while speaking or writing to an audience.

  8. Task Response: The extent to which the requirements of a specific task are met.

  9. Time management: How well the time given for various tasks is observed and utilized.

  10. Spelling: Correctness in writing words in assigned tasks.

  11. Comprehension in listening: Capability and readiness to respond to spoken English.

  12. Lexical resources: Ability to demonstrate wider than normal uncommonly used English words.

With the emphasis placed on those aspects listed above while preparing for Duolingo, performance in all areas of the test will be enhanced and so higher scores will be attainable.

Essential Elements of the Grading System

  1. Adaptive Testing: The DET test employs an adaptive approach wherein the difficulty of the questions is modified based on an individual’s responses. This makes it possible to measure accurately the level of ability the candidate possesses.

  2. Automated Scoring: The scoring of the test is done using advanced algorithms which score the answers fairly and in unison.

  3. Human Review: Apart from the automated scoring, certain aspects of your test such as the written and oral evaluations are graded by real human members to ensure fairness and accuracy.
