You can also take advantage of the IELTS speaking part, and improve your chances to secure a good band score if you are not repeating the same content.

In the IELTS exam, the speaking test might seem pressurizing, but have you ever thought of the bright side? You might have limited options to speak on, but it is relieving that the IELTS speaking topics and IELTS speaking questions are never complicated ones. Those are usually about daily life, places, people, or things that you are interested in or situations that people have faced in general. The strategy is to take the IELTS practice test sessions and do IELTS sample tests before sitting in the IELTS test to achieve the desired scores.

Right now, even if you feel clueless or not that confident to appear for the speaking test, you can always hone your verbal and communication ability by following these top-rated IELTS exam preparation, and IELTS speaking test techniques :

  • You should be good at managing time.
  • Do not overuse words and avoid using filler words to score better in the IELTS speaking test.
  • You should be confident about offering differing opinions on topics that may be contradictory to the examiner's stance.
  • Practice in front of a mirror, or with a friend on different IELTS speaking topics, and IELTS speaking questions. This will ensure that you maintain your body language and receive feedback for improvement as it will be a person-to-person interaction.
  • Always try to maintain your fluency and clarity with the right usage of vocabulary and grammar. Do not bother using fancy and extravagant words in the IELTS exam.
  • Respond mindfully and stick to the point while justifying reasons.

These basic tips and techniques will aid you in sitting for the IELTS exam confidently. Now you might have understood that the key to taking your IELTS preparation is through rigorous practice, let us dig into a few samples on the topic:  Describe a foreigner who speaks your native language (Hindi) very well for the cue card part of the speaking test. This is for you to get an idea of how to attempt the IELTS speaking part and respond to the follow-up questions by formulating clear and concise answers that are not monotonous.

How to prepare for the Cue Card Task in the IELTS exam?

The tip to give the best response in the cue card speaking part is to divide the prompt/ topic into a few sub-parts which will help you give clear information. To make it easier for you to understand, this is how we can respond to the cue card task for the IELTS exam:

Introduction:

You can start with a short introduction about who he/she is, where he/she is from, what he/she does, where he/she learned Hindi from, and how you came to know about him/her knowing Hindi.

Highlighting key points to specific questions such as:

  1. Why did he/she learn the Hindi language?- You can cover the reason why they chose to learn the language.
  2. Did he/she face any challenges while learning Hindi?- Here you can speak about the challenges and hindrances that they faced when they were midway through learning the language.
  3. Which abilities of his/hers stood out to you?- Make it interesting by giving your personal opinion on what qualities in terms of language ability appealed to you the most.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, you should round off your monologue by speaking about the impression you got from this person, and how it has impacted your thoughts on cultural exchange.

IELTS exam sample 1 for the topic “Describe a foreigner who speaks your native language (Hindi) very well”

Introduction

Just as I was in my freshmen year of college, I met a girl, Amy, who belonged to Nigeria. She was at my college as an exchange student, and she was pursuing History. I met her through an event that was organized in the institute where we both were participants. I approached her to introduce myself by greeting and she responded by saying ‘Namaste’. I was in awe as I did not expect her to know Hindi. After a pause, I hesitatingly asked, in English, if she understood Hindi completely or just in bits and pieces. With a subdued smile, she spoke to me about how she learned Hindi two years back through an online learning platform.

Why did she learn the Hindi language?

About her experience related to learning Hindi, she stated how she began admiring the rich heritage and culture of India that she could learn about from her history books. This made her cultivate a desire to explore Indian history, culture, and communities. She wanted to go beyond textbook learning by dreaming of coming to India to observe and research first-hand which is why she learnt the native language of India.

Did she face any challenges while learning Hindi?

Unlike other European languages, Hindi for Amy seemed difficult, but her interest and passion for learning made it easier for her to put in effort. It was the tone, cadence, and pronunciation that she had pointed out as being the challenging part to emulate. She felt that she still wasn't able to catch up to that accent, which is true to some extent. But being an overseas student, I felt that she was doing pretty well, and proved to be a fast learner.

Which abilities of hers stood out to you?

She was good at grammar usage and was best at fluency. She also had coherence whenever she engaged in conversations. Apart from the language ability in Hindi, she stood out because of her confidence and charming personality.

Conclusion

I openly praised her for her firmness to research on the Indian history and culture. Even now, she never fails to teach me one or another thing about her Nigerian roots. I feel elated to have found this connection to share not just about cultures, but a friendship that is based on trust, and concern.

IELTS exam sample 2 for “Describe a foreigner who speaks your native language (Hindi) very well”

Introduction

I met Charlie, a foreigner from South Korea but currently based in India who is known to vlog regularly on travel, culture, food, and language of India. The highlight here is that he could speak flawless Hindi which he flaunted while buying kulhad chai. I was absolutely surprised to see his proficiency and immediately, I directed my question at him asking where and when did he learn a language like Hindi. He revealed that he moved to India six years back, and he enrolled himself in a language institute.

Why did he learn the Hindi language?

He stated that he learned Hindi as he admired it and secondly, he longed to cover content on Indian food, particularly street food, and traditional cuisines, and show it to the whole world. Despite not belonging to India, he wanted to stand out as the ‘Korean Food Vlogger’ solely covering Indian food content, and highlighting the food and lifestyle of Indian people.

Did he face any challenges while learning Hindi?

While most foreigners seem to find some difficulty in learning Hindi if it is online, his situation turned out to be somewhat different as he learned it in my native land amongst the Hindi-speaking population. The location for him aided in practicing and having daily interaction with the natives. For his speaking ability, he was quite satisfied with his accent, but he said he wanted to work harder on excelling at reading and writing Hindi.

Which abilities of his stood out to you?

He was a generous person who was honest to his core. The way he always was on the go to keep learning and improving his skills, was something I couldn't overlook. The open-to-learning mindset and his passion for bringing India's food styles and culture to the world captivated me the most. I ended up thinking what most of the natives were reluctant to show to the world had been showcased by a foreigner. His resilience to learn and use this language for his work is unmatched.

Conclusion

The interaction was wholesome as he maintained professionalism even while talking casually. If I talk about his engagement in cultural exchange, he has still been active in speaking about the customs, traditions, and lifestyle of his country, without leaving any room for controversy or comparison to India. To be honest, his contributions and achievements are inspiring and mean a lot to Indians as he has been representing its culture and food.

IELTS test follow-up questions

After you are done with speaking on the IELTS speaking topic, you will be asked follow-up questions based on what you spoke. Below are some IELTS speaking questions based on the topic, which are commonly asked in the IELTS test:

Question 1: What is the importance of the internet in learning a language?

Answer 1: For those individuals who have time or work-related constraints, the internet proves to be a great place for continual learning. Without compromising or giving up work, there are online courses related to language that can be taken in a self-paced format, as well as remotely at a particular slot if they want to enjoy live classes. The live classes are interactive and you can always improve while interacting with other learners, and receive immediate feedback from the trainer in real-time on which aspects to work on.

Question 2: Can it be difficult for non-natives to learn a different language?

Answer 2: Not exactly. It depends on the drive and willingness to study a particular language. Also, if someone gets to be part of an interactive community that speaks the target language, it helps them practice and become fluent. It is best when the non-natives can indulge in regular conversations while learning the language because it caters to fluency and clarity. So, there's nothing like learning new languages is unattainable.

Question 3: How did the Hindi proficiency of these foreigners help them to steer life in India?

Answer 3: As they are competent in speaking Hindi, they can avail services from the locals, participate in events within the country, and engage in cultural exchange quite easily. They do not require any guide for visiting and exploring places and things of their interest. In addition, they do not get deceived or fall trap into nasty traps which have the potential to cost their money and reputation.
