Overview

Imagine taking a stroll back in time to September 1895 when the roots of our university were planted with the establishment of Arlington College. Back then, this college wasn't what we think of today—it was a private school catering to students from primary through secondary levels, which roughly corresponds to the first through tenth grades in today's terms. The city of Arlington was facing challenges in its public school system, dealing with issues like limited funds and insufficient staffing.

In this backdrop, a local merchant named Edward Emmett Rankin took the initiative to rally his fellow citizens. Together, they donated materials and land to build a schoolhouse—a place that would later evolve into the modern campus we know today. This act of community-driven generosity marked the beginnings of our university, reflecting the spirit of collaboration and commitment to education that has persisted throughout our institution's history.

Located on the southern fringe of downtown Arlington, the main campus of the University of Texas at Arlington covers 420 acres. A center of learning Although its role is fundamentally academic, it is also an integral part of the city's scenery. Placed on both sides of the Texas and Pacific Railway that led to the city's establishment, the campus includes a wide variety--meant included here are branches from all over the public library system; City Hall; Theatre Arlington; Levitt Pavilion (performance hall); The Arlington Museum of Art; churches, and various businesses.

As if following the pattern of the moribund city's former street grid, the campus topography is gently sloping to the south and east with lovely landscaped creeks all around. Steps on the Second Street Mall to Ransom Hall, Preston Hall, and College Hall (all dating from 1919) give evidence of the campus's historical attractions. Made of traditional materials, they reflect the architectural style of the time and bear witness to the longevity of their history.

Although the buildings of the pre-World War Ⅱ period have a timeless feel, those from the 1960s-'80s adopt today's contemporary style of being modern and practical but without any particular architectural flare. It is worth mentioning that the 2012 completion of the College Park District represented a major eastward expansion for the campus. The district includes an arena with 7,000 seats for spectators, dormitories, student apartments, stores and a 1,800-car parking garage. It also features a welcome center; college credit union; and a park covering five acres called the Green at College Park.

The UTA has more than 5,000 people living on campus, making it a hustle and bustle of activity that never goes to sleep. The Arlington Hall, Kalpana Chawla Hall, Vandergriff Hall, West Hall and numerous on-campus apartment buildings are all homes for a large number of students that help create the vibrant 24 hour environment unique to campus.

The dynamic campus life at the University of Texas at Arlington is home to 6,000 foreign students representing 100 countries. The institution offers a variety of extracurricular activities, counseling, and psychological services in addition to sports clubs. Throughout the year, students can take part in thirty various sports activities. Men's and women's Division I sports teams in the NCAA are open to students who are interested in athletics.
