The University of Plymouth, a public research university primarily based in Plymouth, England, also operates campuses and affiliated colleges across South West England. With 18,410 students, it ranks as the 57th largest university in the UK by total student enrollment, including the Open University.

Founded as the Plymouth School of Navigation in 1862, the institution evolved into a university college in 1920 and a polytechnic in 1970. Initially composed of Plymouth Polytechnic, Rolle College in Exmouth, the Exeter College of Art and Design, and Seale-Hayne College, it was renamed Polytechnic South West in 1989, a move unpopular with students due to its lack of identity. The name remained until it gained university status in 1992 and absorbed the Plymouth School of Maritime Studies.

In 2006, remains of a World War II air-raid shelter were rediscovered on the Plymouth campus, where a bomb had killed over 70 civilians during the Blitz on April 22, 1941. The powerful blast left human remains in the treetops, with only three children surviving the explosion.

The university's first vice-chancellor was John Bull, followed by Roland Levinsky, who tragically died in 2007 after an accident involving live electrical cables during a storm. Subsequent vice-chancellors included Mark Cleary, Steve Newstead, and Wendy Purcell, who served from December 2007 until being placed on leave in July 2014 amid an internal and later external review of the university's governance. Judith Petts CBE has been vice-chancellor since February 2016.

The University of Plymouth is known for its programs in maritime business, marine engineering, marine biology, and Earth, ocean, and environmental sciences. In 2008, it was selected by the Royal Statistical Society to host its Centre for Statistical Education. In 2010, student protests erupted over rising tuition fees and course cuts.

Recent developments include the renovation of the Babbage Building, which will add 10,000 square meters of space and rooftop gardens, and the transformation of InterCity Place near Plymouth railway station into a center for medical degree students. Plans are also in place to convert the Brunel Building into an urban park.

In April 2021, a fire on the sixth floor led to an arrest for arson and one hospitalization for smoke inhalation.
