Founded in 1948 as the Ryerson Institute of Technology, the institution pays homage to Egerton Ryerson, a key contributor to the development of Canada West's public school system and teacher's college. In 1964, changes in provincial legislation led to a reorganization, and the institution was rechristened Ryerson Polytechnical Institute. During the 1970s, under this name, the institution gained limited degree-granting powers.
