Cleveland YMCA introduced day and evening programs for disadvantaged kids in the 1880s. The Association Institute was developed in 1906 following a restructuring of the YMCA curriculum. The college was established in 1929 and was known as Fenn College. In 1964, however, it became a state-assisted institution, inheriting the property, personnel, and curriculum of Fenn College. It is a HLC-accredited university.

Cleveland Law School was one of the first law schools to accept African-Americans and women into evening classes. The second evening lawyer’s course is known as the John Marshall School of Law. started operating in 1916. In 1946, the two institutions merged to establish The Cleveland-Marshall School of Law.
