The idea of creating an undergraduate liberal arts college in Sault Ste. Marie began as a grassroots movement in the 1950s. In 1964, the Algoma College Association was established, paving the way for the founding of Algoma University College in December 1965 as a non-sectarian institution affiliated with Laurentian University. Starting its operations at Sault College in September 1967, the university initially served 77 students, mainly mature or "extension" students looking to enhance their post-secondary education. By 1969–1970, part-time enrollment had surged to over 1,000 students.

A pivotal moment came in 1971 when Algoma University College received approval to offer second- and third-year courses, enabling the introduction of full-time, three-year programming in Bachelor of Arts degrees. The university moved to Shingwauk Hall and the former Shingwauk Indian Residential School site in September 1971.
