International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is a test for students who want to study in English-speaking countries. To determine an applicant’s level of English proficiency, many universities worldwide rely on the IELTS test results, including those in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia. To be considered for admission, students must have a specific IELTS score. This implies that the potential international student can complete an English-language degree programme and boosts their chances of being accepted by a university of their choice.

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) uses a complex algorithm to determine exam results. The simple structure, the test’s various sections and score determinants make it long and difficult to pass. A step-by-step explanation of the IELTS scoring system is provided in the next section. IELTS applicants need to understand the IELTS scoring method before moving on with their IELTS preparation and striving for the best possible result on the test. If you’re interested in evaluating your prospects of performing well on the test, you can check out previous test participants’ performance records.

Candidates who want to study, work, or migrate overseas will first need to take this test. On the other hand, candidates always treat the IELTS exam as a terrifying ordeal. This is due to a lack of knowledge about proper exam structure and scoring. The most crucial element of an IELTS candidate’s preparation is gaining a thorough grasp of the marking and scoring process.

Know the Exams: IELTS

IELTS, as it is often called, provides two tests. Academic and General training are the two categories of IELTS tests. If a candidate intends to study abroad, they must decide between them.

The IELTS General Training is commonly used for most migration objectives. However, some institutions and businesses explicitly need an IELTS Academic score. This means that the final choice rests with the organisation or school that the individual chooses to study abroad with.

Check out the following sources for further information on the two IELTS test types and other IELTS-related topics:

The Exam Structure of the IELTS:

Academic and General Training IELTS tests are assessed on a 9-band score, which is the same for both. There are four sections to the IELTS exam. These are their names:

  • Listening
  • Speaking
  • Reading
  • Writing

Band scores from 1 to 9 will be given to the candidate in each section. The candidate’s ultimate total score will be determined by averaging this score. It’s also possible that this score maybe half a point (e.g., 5 or 6) or a whole point (e.g., 5 or 6). (ex: 5.5 or 7.5).

Which IELTS Score Types Are There?

The IELTS score kinds are essential to know before going into the score computation procedure. IELTS scores are divided into two categories: academic and general.

  1. Overall Band Scores
  2. Sectional Band Scores

Students are given a band score (sectional band score) ranging from 0 to 9 in half-point increments for each of the four portions of the test (9 being the highest score possible). Overall band scores range from 0 to 9 and are computed by taking the sum of all four section scores, multiplying that sum by 4, and then rounding it down to the nearest half-point—sectional band scores of 6.5, 5.5, 6.0, and 6.5 total 24.5. Divided by four, the final score is 6.125, resulting in a band score of 6.0. This is the final score.

Both the academic and general training versions of IELTS employ the same scoring methodology.

How IELTS Overall Band Score is Calculated

Overall band score for IELTS applicants is based on the sum of their band scores. It could be rounded to the nearest whole or the half band.

Totalling 6.5 in Reading, 5 in Writing, 7 in Speaking, and 6.5 in Listening, a candidate would get a score of 25 on the test.

The result is 6.25 when 25 is divided by four.

In this case, the result is.25, thus it is rounded up to the next half band.

As a result, the applicant has a band score of 6.5.

There is just one band 9, which signifies an expert in the language. Band 1 is the lowest possible score on a grading scale.

Detailed IELTS Score Information:

LISTENING:

There are a total of 40 questions in the listening segment. Each programme receives one mark, on average. A total of 40 points is used to generate the final result, which is then divided into a 9-point score band.

READING:

In addition, there are 40 questions in the reading part. Each correct answer is awarded a point, which is then used to calculate a student’s score. The IELTS Academic Reading and IELTS General Reading examinations are graded differently. The average number of marks needed to earn a specific IELTS band score causes discrepancies between examinations.

To score higher in General training Reading, candidates will have to answer more questions than Academics.

WRITING:

A professional examiner reviews the two-part writing test. The test is graded according to the following criteria:

  1. (Task 1) Task Achievement/ (Task 2)Task Response
  2. Coherence and Cohesion
  3. Lexical Resource
  4. Grammatical Range and Accuracy

In the evaluation, the same weight is given to each criterion. You get your overall band grade by averaging all four of these factors.

SPEAKING:

Speaking is evaluated using the same standards. This section has four criteria:

  1. Fluency and Coherence
  2. Lexical Resource
  3. Grammatical Range and Accuracy
  4. Pronunciation
