IELTS exams are an English proficiency test that individuals preparing for global migration or studying abroad have to give. It comes in four sections— reading, speaking, listening, and writing. If you are preparing for the IELTS in Ahmedabad, then we can help you out. For today, we will be focusing on the Writing section of the IELTS exams. We have seven study tips for you to increase your IELTS writing score. Therefore, without further ado, let us dive right in.

Academic or General?

Before getting to the central part, you need to understand that the IELTS exams are divided into Academic and General. The Academic category is more professional and formal, and in comparison to the General category, it is a bit difficult. It is ideal for students applying for Postgraduates or Masters. As for the General category, this exam allows more informal tones and consists of general interests topics. Students applying for non-degree courses and individuals applying for jobs and employment training can opt for this category.

Tips for IELTS Writing exams

Let’s take a look at the tips that will help you score better.

#1 Try to avoid any informal writing

This tip is mainly for the Academic category but can be applied to the General category as well. Try not to use informal writing at all. For example, avoid abbreviations and writing in the first or second person until instructed.

#2 Begin with the Writing Task 2

Writing Task 2 is similar for both the categories of IELTS. Therefore, it is advised that you start with this task first. It is comparatively easier than Task 1 but takes more time and has higher marks. According to IELTS recommendations, it is better to allow 40 minutes to Task 2 and 20 minutes to Task 1. However, do not stick to these time limits and complete the tasks at your own pace. But first, attend Task 2.

#3 Understand how the exam is marked

Because of its subjective nature, IELTS Writing exams are difficult to assess. Therefore, the marking is based more on quality than right or wrong answers. Here is how it is done:
  • 25% for how accurate and relevant the answers are
  • 25% for grammar
  • 25% for vocabulary
  • 25% for fluency and clarity of the answers

#4 Stay within the word count

Word count matters, and you should try to stay within it. It will especially be harder for the smaller word counts than the larger ones. Despite that, write short, crisp, and clear and convey your thoughts properly.

#5 Don’t copy from the question

Even if your answer is there within the question, try not to write the exact words from the questions. While answering, always use your own words.

#6 Careful how you answer

Make sure your answer answers the question being asked. Try not to go off track under pressure, and organize your answer before you write it down. Understand what is being required of you and answer accordingly.

#7 Practice some more

Lastly, no tip is better than practicing. Therefore, take a little time off to practice writing every day. Take as many practice tests as possible, and ask someone proficient in English to look over the answers for you. Best IELTS classes in Ahmedabad are available that you can attend.
