Types of essays: IELTS Writing Task 2

There are six types of essays, but you will only receive one. The essay topic you're given determines the essay's approach and structure, as well as the task achievement component of the scoring criteria. So, let's start with an overview of the many types of essays.

  • Discussion: You will be given a statement or argument and must respond on both sides. On the other hand, you may be requested to express your thoughts on a particular viewpoint with which you agree or disagree. Please keep in mind that you should only provide your opinion if specifically solicited.
  • Balanced opinion: In these essays, you must discuss an argument and show that you agree with some of it while not disagreeing with others. You cannot remain objective; instead, choose one side with which you agree more than the other while being slightly agreeable to the other.
  • Two Questions or Direct Questions: The purpose of this essay is to write a straightforward article with relevant examples. The inquiry will have one or more questions to which you must provide direct responses.
  • Opinion-based: These essays allow you to express your views or points of dispute on a given issue, whether you agree or disagree. If you agree with the argument, you should just explain that point of view rather than the dispute.
  • Problem-Solution or Cause-and-Effect Essay: This style of essay requires you to identify the underlying cause of the problem given in the question and propose appropriate solutions.
  • Advantages and disadvantages: When writing an essay in this structure, you must discuss both the benefits and downsides of a given topic. This style of essay may also require you to express your thoughts. If so, you must express your viewpoint; if it is not desired, you must ignore it and refrain from doing so.

What happens if you write under the word limit?

In the IELTS Writing Task 2, there is a fixed penalty of a band 5 score for writing less than 250 words this time, but a shorter essay always lowers your marks. The emphasis has changed from quantity to quality and the evolution of ideas that are written. However, a strong and well-argued answer necessitates a sufficient number of words to allow you to expand on your thoughts and more effectively support your findings. For example, if a student is allocated Band 5, they express restricted and underdeveloped ideas; nevertheless, in order to be assigned Band 7 or above, they must provide considerable development of the major ideas. If your requirements require it, your work should be between 270 and 290 words long. It provides ample space to elaborate on all of the essential issues without deviating from the main theme.

The opening, in particular, should be brief, about 40-50 words long, to establish the backdrop for the debate. You must ensure that the body paragraphs, which comprise the majority of any essay, are sufficiently elaborated. If you opt to write two body paragraphs, write around 100-95 words each; if you write three paragraphs, write 60-65 words each. The conclusion should similarly be brief, no more than 30-40 words long, and should adequately summarize the essay's point. Thus, exceeding the recommended word limit may not result in a high score, but may lead the content to wander from the topic of debate, thereby lowering the points. A good band score also requires clear and legible writing, the use of notes or memorized responses, and as much coverage of the full question as possible. Finally, there are no negative consequences for submitting less than 250 words, but it is critical to ensure that all ideas developed are well within the recommended optimum word length.

IELTS writing task 2 topics with answers:

Some people believe that the fittest and strongest individuals and teams always succeed in sports. Others think that success in sports depends on mental attitudes. Discuss both views and give your opinions.

Band 6

Some people presumes that the fittest and strongest athletes and teams always win in sports. Others believe that mental attitudes is critical to athletic achievement. In this essay, both views will be discuss, however, in my opinion, mental atitude is more crucial for victory.

Some people assume that the fittest and most powerful individuals and teams always win in sports and this notion come from the point that any kind of sport requires the utmost level of endurence and energy to continue the match. For example, a football match requires the players to run for 90 minutes on the field continuously. Unless and until, the players are physically fit, they not be able to keep up with the pace and stay ahead in the competition.

Some people believe that mental perspective is important for athletic achievement. This is because being focus on the game is a critical factor for winning. Also, there has to be a proper approach to handling pressure in the game. For example, the South African cricket team is called the Chokers as their batting lineup crumbles under presure if they are chasing a high score in the second innings and needless to says a national team of a country will have the fittest and the most hard-working players, however, just because they are unable to take the pressure of a high-intensity match.

In conclusion, some people contends that the strongest team wins in any sport while others believe it is mental strength that makes a diference. In my opinion, the latter are true as no matter how strong or well-prepared a team is, unless they are mentally strong enough to approach the game with the correct attitude, a win is not possible.

Band 7

Some people have been saying that on the field the stronger and fittest athletes surely win in sports. There is, however, other theories which include stresing that resilience of mind is the ultimate ingredient in the concoction that make up athletic champions. This essay will analyze both kinds of viewpoints, although it are clear to me that psychological endurance is more significant to win the battle.

Some people assume that fitness and power are all that matter in sports since they define the level of performance expected of an individual. This are because most of the games or sports have the aspect of stammina, endurance, or energy that is required for one to perform optimally while playing the games. For instance, football demands its participants to sprint and their movements during 90 minutes of the match. If they was not physically fit, they wouldn’t be able to keep the pressure up to be able to overpower the oponent.

While there are opinions that mental toughness is mandatory for achievement of success in athletics. Both the concentration and the capacity to cope with stress are an important element comprising success. For instance, the South African cricket team for a long time was referred to as the ‘Chokers’ implying that this team lose pressure in do-or-die circamstances especially when setting a huge target in the second innings. Of course, these players can clasified as some of the most fit and talented athletes in the world, yet their lack of ability to keep their heads in pressure-filled conditions greatly reduce their likelihood of coming out on top.

Therefore, it is evident that though some may argue that size and stamina will always win games, there are others who will propose that mental toughnes should do the trick. I strongly believe the latter is important, since regardless of the physical fitness of the team, if the head and heart are not set on victory, success will most likely elude the group.

Band 9

Some people assert that physical prowess and superior fitness invariably secure triumph in sports. However, there is a counter argument that states that the ability to maintain a strong mental condition is the quintessential component in crafting champions. Both views will be analyzed in this essay, however, I firmly believe that mental toughness has more value to the extent of bringing about victory.

According to the proponents of the emphasis that privilege muscles, and stamina as the key components of sports performances. Almost every sporting activity requires a lot of strength, endurance, and vigor if one is to perform it to the best of his or her ability. Football for instance will demand that players display consistent dynamism and continued agility throughout a 90 minutes of ferocious game. Lack of optimal fitness performance would hamper an athlete’s ability to sustain high competition and might readily surrender to the opposite party.

On the other hand, supporters of mental toughness opine that concentration, and focus as well as the ability to cope with pressure is fundamental to achieving in athletics. Thus, it is at such a critical time that individuals with psychological stamina come out as winners. A clear example of this is the erstwhile South African cricket team which was infamously branded ‘Chokers’ as they repeatedly faltered under pressure during critical match junctures, particularly when chasing lofty targets. Despite their exceptional physical capabilities, they often fail to control their emotions during such events thus reducing their probability of achieving their goals in the past.

In conclusion, for some people physical fitness is considered as the foundation of sporting achievement, however, I am of the opinion that perseverance of mind is the essential foundation for success. A clear head and a strong will which no team can do without when it comes to winning.
