What is SGPA?

SGPA or Semester Grade Point Average is exactly what the name suggests. It is an aggregate score for your marks in all of the subjects during the semester. And how to calculate SGPA? Well, it’s easy.

How to calculate SGPA?

Your university might use a grade system, credit system, or score system to rank you for a particular subject. So first what you have to do is, create a list of all the scores that you’ve secured in each subject. After this, look up for the specific grade points that your scores fall into for each subject. Lastly, your university might have given you the credits you earned for each subject. So, put all the values in this formula to calculate SGPA:

For example, you scored grade points of A=10, B=9, and C=10 for three subjects. Your university must have specified the credits required for each of these subjects, and that amount determines how tough or long a subject is.

Now multiply the grade points of each subject to their specific credits. So if subject A has 5 credits, B has 3, and C has 4 credits:

SGPA = (10 × 5) + (9 × 3) + (10 × 4)

                          5 + 3 + 4

Calculating this, SGPA = 9.75

How to convert SGPA in percentage?

You can also convert your SGPA to percentage. 

So how to convert SGPA in percentage? Let us see this by an example. So if your SGPA for 4 semesters are 6.5, 7, 8.5, and 6.7, then

SGPA = 6.5 + 7 + 8.5 + 6.7 = 7.1

Now to convert SGPA to Percentage 7.1 × 10 - 7.5 = 63.5%

What is CGPA?

Now that you’ve understood how to calculate SGPA, let us understand what Cumulative Grade Point Average is. A CGPA is nothing but an average of collective SGPAs. So at the end of your academic year, you will have an aggregate score for all of your semester marks. 

How CGPA is calculated from SGPA?

This is how CGPA is calculated from SGPA:

• Take out an average of all of your scores from each subject during the semester. This will be your SGPA for that semester.
• Add all of the SGPAs of each semester and divide by the number of semesters.
• The result will be your CGPA score.

So now how to calculate CGPA from SGPA? Let’s understand with an example.

For example, you had 3 semesters and your SGPA for each of them were 8, 9, and 7.5, so your CGPA is:

CGPA of academic year = (SGPA 1 + SGPA 2 + SGPA 3) ÷ 3 (we are calculating for 3 semesters)

So, your CGPA will be 8.1 for that academic year. And this is how to calculate CGPA from SGPA.

Convert SGPA to CGPA (KTU)

APJ Abdul Kalam Technology University uses its own SGPA to CGPA converter formula. And this is how they convert SGPA to CGPA:

Here, 

Ci = Credit assigned for a course

GPi = Grade point for that course

So, this is what KTU does to convert SGPA to CGPA.

Calculate SGPA to CGPA (SPPU)

Now, the Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) uses a different formula to calculate SGPA to CGPA.

Here, C1, C2, C3, C4, and C5 = Course Credits

And, G12, G2, G3, G4, G5 = Grade Points of the Course

So, that is what the SPPU does to calculate SGPA to CGPA. It is easy to calculate SGPA to CGPA once you know the basic formula.

How to convert CGPA to percentage?

To convert your CGPA to percentage you need to enter your CGPA in this simple formula:

Percentage = CGPA × 9.5

Well recognised universities and education boards such as the CBSE use this method too.

So, for example you have a score of 8.9 CGPA and you wish to convert your CGPA to percentage. In this case you have to simply multiply 8.9 with 9.5

Percentage = 8.9 × 9.5 = 84.5%

So that is how you can easily convert CGPA to percentage.
